We're getting to the sharp end of the football season now, and most teams can now count their remaining games on the fingers of two hands - Norfolk hands or otherwise - so it's time to start tracking who's going up and who's going down, like every year...

We were well on course for a solid 3rd or 4th place in the Conf until we had a ropey December. With a good run of form about to be gravely tested in the upcoming Y Clasico derby, we'll see if Wrexham can keep up the good work and sneak in. We haven't been in the play-offs since 2013.

Random 'certainty' predictions:

Going Down
Aston Villa
Bolton
Colchester
York

Going Up
Burnley
Northampton
Cheltenham
Oxford
Wigan

I believe in Rafa. Even though we lost to Leicester, we played better than we have in awhile. So that's some positive reinforcement going forward, even though there's not too much time left.

Relegation candidates
17. Norwich City - P31, 28pt
18. Sunderland - P29, 25pt
19. Newcastle United - P29, 24pt
20. Aston Villa - P30, 16pt
Norwich beat West Brom away to climb out of the relegation zone. The Tyne-Wear derby tomorrow looks like a must-win for Newcastle now (and fingers crossed that they don't :D)
Promotion Candidates
1. Burnley - P38, 75pt
2. Brighton & Hove Albion - P38, 71pt
3. Middlesbrough - P37, 70pt
4. Hull City - P37, 66pt
5. Derby County - P38, 64pt
6. Sheffield Wednesday - P38, 62pt
7. Cardiff City - P38, 59pt
Boro and Hull played last night - 1-0 to Boro - and Brighton's win today courtesy of a last-minute penalty miss from MK Dons means they reassume 2nd. Burnley had a 95th minute sli-up to draw at Wolves.
Relegation Candidates
21. Fulham - P38, 38pt
22. MK Dons - P37, 37pt
23. Charlton Athletic - P38, 32pt
24. Bolton Wanderers - P38, 26pt
Catastrophic day for Bolton - tonked 6-0. Charlton also stuffed to nil, MK Dons missed the aforementioned penalty and the big winners were Rotherham again, with a fourth win in five!
Promotion Candidates
1. Burton Albion - P37, 74pt
2. Wigan Athletic - P37, 68pt
3. Walsall - P37, 68pt
4. Gillingham - P37, 63pt
5. Millwall - P37, 62pt
6. Barnsley - P37, 58pt
7. Bradford City - P37, 58pt
Burton, Wigan and Walsall all win again, with Wigan's win over Bradford letting Barnsley slip into the playoffs...
Relegation Candidates
20. Blackpool - P38, 38pt
21. Doncaster Rovers - P37, 37pt
22. Oldham Athletic - P36, 37pt
23. Crewe Alexandra - P37, 30pt
24. Colchester United - P37, 28pt
Big winners are Blackpool, whose win over Crewe keeps Crewe flailing and lifts the Pool up. Points on the board, but one more game played...
Promotion Candidates
1. Northampton Town - P37, 82pt
2. Oxford United - P38, 71pt
3. Bristol Rovers - P37, 65pt
4. Plymouth Argyle - P37, 65pt
5. Accrington Stanley - P37, 64pt
6. Portsmouth - P37, 60pt
7. Leyton Orient - P37, 59pt
8. Wycombe Wanderers - P37, 57pt
The Cobblers are 11pt clear now with a close win at Stevenage. If they get 14 more points in the next 9 games, there's nothing anyone can do about it... Plymouth's slip at Luton drops them out of automatic promotion for now - on goal difference!

Relegation Candidates
22. Stevenage - P37, 34pt
23. York City - P37, 27pt
24. Dagenham & Redbridge - P38, 25pt
Little change down here. Dagenham lose, York lose, Stevenage lose...
Promotion candidates
1. Cheltenham Town - P39, 83pt
2. Forest Green Rovers - P39, 82pt
3. Grimsby Town - P36, 69pt
4. Braintree Town - P37, 65pt
5. Dover - P37, 65pt
6. Tranmere Rovers - P39, 63pt
Cheltenham amazingly lose to playoff-chasing Braintree, but Forest Green can only draw with another potential play-off team Tranmere. Grimsby's position is strong, but they're outsiders.

If neither Bristol Rovers (vs Crawley) nor Accrington Stanley (vs Cambridge) do better than a draw this weekend and Northampton Town (vs Notts County) win, Northampton will be the first team to have a new division next season

No, it's true.

We lost against 3rd place Grimsby and then in the next game beat 1st place Cheltenham. Our next fixture?

2nd place Forest Green. The play-off chase has not been kind to us but we'll stick at it.

Playoff candidates
1. Cheltenham Town - P41, 86pt
---
2. Forest Green Rovers - P41, 84pt
3. Grimsby Town - P38, 72pt
4. Tranmere Rovers - P41, 69pt
5. Dover - P39, 68pt
---
6. Braintree Town - P39, 68pt
7. Eastleigh - P39, 66pt
8. Wrexham - P40 65pt

*cough*

If neither Bristol Rovers (vs Crawley) nor Accrington Stanley (vs Cambridge) do better than a draw this weekend and Northampton Town (vs Notts County) win, Northampton will be the first team to have a new division next season

No, it's true.

In fairness, Northampton have played some brilliant football and it's a Leicester-style turnaround from looking like relegation fodder until the appointment of Chris Wilder midway through last season.

I want name recognition! :P

The National League has resolved its promotion candidates pretty quickly - just the 7 listed teams now. Not surprising, I guess, as only 1 team goes up.

It's a horrible league to get out of. There is such a bottleneck due to the two up, two down system. It really needs to be three up, three down. That said, it looks like, annoyingly, Cheltenham will bounce straight back much like Bristol Rovers did the previous year.

Early kick-offs, no major changes, but:
17. Norwich City - P31, 28pt
18. Sunderland - P31, 27pt
19. Newcastle United - P30, 25pt
20. Aston Villa - P32, 16pt
Villa now 12pt away from safety with only 18pt left to get...
1. Burnley - P39, 76pt
2. Middlesbrough - P38, 73pt
3. Brighton & Hove Albion - P39, 72pt
Boro won last night and Burnley drew with Brighton earlier today

17. Norwich City - P32, 31pt
18. Sunderland - P31, 27pt
19. Newcastle United - P31, 25pt
20. Aston Villa - P32, 16pt
Norwich beat Newcastle, putting the Magpies in a well-deserved crisis. Villa need as many points as they have scored in the first 32 games in their next 6
1. Burnley - P39, 76pt
2. Middlesbrough - P38, 73pt
3. Brighton & Hove Albion - P39, 72pt
4. Hull City - P38, 69pt
5. Sheffield Wednesday - P39, 65pt
6. Derby County - P39, 64pt
7. Cardiff City - P39, 62pt
Mostly holding station - wins for Boro, Hull, Wednesday and Cardiff, draw for Burnley and Brighton (with each other) so only one change of position as Wednesday overtake beaten Derby.
21. Fulham - P39, 41pt
22. MK Dons - P39, 37pt
23. Charlton Athletic - P39, 35pt
24. Bolton Wanderers - P39, 26pt
No change here, but Fulham's win makes everyone else's life difficult. Charlton also won, but Bolton are for the drop very soon - it could be all but over due to goal difference next time round.

Leagues 1/2 & National League to follow...

Tonight was a huge blow to Hull's chances of going up automatically.
Not just the result but the psychological effect of it. They get stuffed and they only have 7 games left to pick themselves up and get back in it.

Northampton draw, Argyle lose so the Cobblers go up... No it's true...

Wrexham are all but out of the Conference play-off race after crashing to a 0-1 defeat against Dover Athletic. :grumpy:

We're six points away from 5th placed Tranmere, with a game in hand over them, but we've played a game more than the other teams around us.

Also, completely away from this but TNS won the Welsh league this weekend too.

:grumpy: :grumpy: :grumpy:

We're six points away from 5th placed Tranmere, with a game in hand over them, but we've played a game more than the other teams around us.
At the moment, you're 6pt behind 5th place Tranmere on the same number of games and you play them next. You've also got 6th place Braintree to play - while Tranmere have to play both Grimsby (4th) and Eastleigh (7th).

That makes Tranmere eminently catchable, as they can lose two games there - one without any effect on your promotion chances and one giving you a 6pt swing on them. If you do Braintree (which you have to!), you're ahead of them on goal difference. All you need then is to win against Barrow while Eastleigh fail to beat Tranmere.

So really it hinges on your next game.

We've got our realism caps on and considering we've lost our last two games and couldn't beat relegation-battling Guisley, it's going to take a minor miracle to see us sneak in there.

The mathematics aren't over but I can't see us doing it. The only thing in our favour, as you have pointed out we have to beat them, Braintree had been off-form these last few games with major injuries to key players.

Argh. For any of you fans out there worried about your own teams... like Manchester United "only" being inside the top 10 of the most profitable league in the world... or say Leicester, Southampton, Leeds or Wednesday slipping to the third tier... try seeing your team slip into the non-leagues. It's hell.

Things what can happen today:

Premier League
If Aston Villa do not win they are relegated.
If Norwich City beat or draw with Sunderland, Aston Villa are relegated without even playing.

Championship
Nada

League One
Nada

League Two
If Northampton Town better Oxford United's result, Northampton are champions - unless Northampton draw, Oxford lose and Accrington win.
If Stevenage win and Dagenham & Redbridge lose, Dagenham are relegated

National League
If Cheltenham Town better Forest Green Rovers' result, Cheltenham Town are promoted as champions.

A stay of execution at lunchtime as Sunderland beat Norwich 3-0, but a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford sends Villa down.

Aston Villa is relegated from the Premiere League after a 1-0 loss against Manchester United.

EDIT: Tree'd

Cheltenham went up from the Conference at the first time of asking; while Carlisle, Shrewsbury and Bristol Rovers also did the same this is the first time since Colchester in 1990 that the returnee has done so as champions of the Conference.

Bouncebackability on show there.

There are two games left in the Conference season. Race for the final (5th place) play-off spot this Saturday:

5th Braintree (75pts) vs 8th Wrexham (69pts)
6th Eastleigh (75pts) vs 7th Tranmere (72pts)

Heat!

If either Braintree or Eastleigh get points from either of their two remaining games, Wrexham are out. But as you can see, this Saturday sees all four contenders playing each other and Wrexham have the most superior goal difference. If Wrexham and Tranmere win their games on Saturday, it will be a scintillating final day of the season.

The Championship is very close at the top with just 3 games to go. It's a shame Boro, Burnley or Brighton will have to contend with the lottery of the play-offs.

Brighton were quite far back in terms of goal difference but after some large wins they are much closer to Burnley and Boro (who they play in the final game of the season), it should be an exciting finish.

All three teams are now tied on 87pt, with goal differences of 33, 32 and 30

After Birmingham held Boro 2-2 last night, relegated Bolton just beat Hull City 1-0 somehow... Looks like it might be a weird weekend at the top of the Championship.

Wigan promoted just now too, with a 4-0 win over Blackpool.

The pressure is off Bolton now, they almost beat Boro the game after they were relegated. Boro had a late goal ruled offside wrongly yesterday but it was always going down to the final day.

In the Championship almost everything is decided except for one small thing:
2. Middlesbrough - P45, 88pt
3. Brighton & Hove Albion - P45, 88pt
The two play today at the Riverside and there's a few permutations.

If Middlesbrough win and Burnley lose, Middlesbrough are promoted as champions with Burnley second.
If Middlesbrough win by two goals or fewer and Burnley draw, Middlesbrough are promoted and Burnley are champions - except in the instance of Burnley drawing 0-0 and Middlesbrough winning 7-5 (or 1-1 and 8-6 and so on), and then I don't know who the champions will be. Probably Boro on head-to-head record.
If Middlesbrough win by three goals or more and Burnley draw, Middlesbrough are promoted as champions with Burnley second.
If Middlesbrough and Brighton draw, Middlesbrough are promoted and Burnley are champions
If Brighton win and Burnley lose, Brighton are promoted as champions with Burnley second.
If Brighton win by three goals or fewer and Burnley draw, Brighton are promoted and Burnley are champions
If Brighton win by four goals or more and Burnley draw, Brighton are promoted as champions with Burnley second - except in the instance of Burnley drawing 6-6 and Brighton winning 4-0 (or 7-7 and 5-1 and so on), and then I don't know who the champions will be. Probably Burnley on away goals in head-to-head record.

Get all that?

Also if Derby win and Hull lose, the Derby/Hull playoff fixtures will be Hull at home in the first leg. Any other result has Derby at home in the first leg.

2. Burton Albion - P45, 84pt
3. Walsall - P45, 81pt
Any result other than a Walsall win (vs Port Vale) and a Burton defeat (vs Doncaster) with a three goal swing or better in Walsall's favour (say... 2-0 and 0-1) will result in Burton's promotion. Burton can be champions with a 20-0 win over Doncaster if Wigan lose at home to Barnsley.

If Walsall lose and Millwall win (vs Gillingham), Millwall will take 3rd and home advantage in the playoffs against one of Barnsley, Scunthorpe or Gillingham, leaving Walsall with home advantage over Bradford - otherwise Walsall have this privilege and Millwall take 4th. If Bradford win (vs Chesterfield) and Millwall don't, Bradford can take 4th and have home advantage in the playoffs against Millwall.

That just leaves the last playoff place. If Barnsley win (vs promoted and champions-elect Wigan) it's theirs unless Scunthorpe can put 10 past Sheffield United. If that happens, just wait for the accusations :D If Scunthorpe win and Barnsley don't, it's Scunthorpe's. If neither win and Gillingham do, it's Gillingham's.

The bottom is just as simple:

20. Fleetwood Town - P45, 48pt
21. Blackpool - P45, 46pt
22. Doncaster Rovers - P45, 45pt
If Fleetwood win (vs relegated Crewe), they're safe and Blackpool and Doncaster are down. If Fleetwood draw, they're safe and Blackpool and Doncaster are down unless one of them can score ten goals or more.

If Fleetwood lose, Blackpool can survive with a win against Peterborough, otherwise they're still down. Doncaster can only stay up if they win at home to Burton and Fleetwood lose to Crewe and the goal swing is 10 in Doncaster's favour and Blackpool don't win. Stuff Leicester's 5000/1 shot, that's kerjillions to one.

2. Accrington Stanley - P45, 84pt
3. Oxford United - P45, 83pt
4. Bristol Rovers - P45, 82pt
Oh, League Two.

If Accrington win (vs Stevenage), they're up. If Oxford win (vs Wycombe), so are they. Bristol have to win (vs relegated Dagenham) to have a chance and will go up if one of Oxford or Accrington don't win.

The team that doesn't make it has home advantage in the playoffs against Wimbledon. Meanwhile Portsmouth will play Plymouth in the playoffs, but whichever team has the better result today will take home advantage. If the results are the same, Portsmouth take it unless Plymouth score eleven more goals.

Can't wait till Brighton vs. Middlesbrough, it is only an hour away now from starting. I can only imagine what a match that is going to be.

I find it quite funny Accrington has promoted to the League One for such a small club, with their old school dressing rooms and all that. But also a big prestige for them. And Portsmouth my favourite english club.. has to promote. For me it is a must. I don't want to see them another year in the League Two.

Boro had a few decent chances to score a second but I'll take 1-0 at HT. :D I just hope Karanka doesn't tell them to park the bus for the next 45 and invite attacks, he often does that even when Boro are in control.
