OMG Ferrari is back! And so's Raikkonen. I thought he was going to be uncompetitive this year

At least we didn't launch the crusades. :D

The Middle East is a problem area, but opening up labor practices and sexual oppression in the Middle East to public scrutiny by holding more and more public events there is actually helping improve things.

Remember, the first female finalist for GT Academy came from the Middle East. Keep chipping away, and things will change. They're already changing.

Or... you could just embargo them... like Cuba or North Korea... where nothing has changed at all over the past three or four decades...
So we should have North Korean, Cuban, Sudan, and Afghanistan GPs? I guess they would improve the lives of the people there. Don't forget an ISIS/ISIL/IS Grand Prix too, they really need one. Bernie probably would go to those places as long as the money is paid upfront.

I feel like I need to say something to that post, but all I can come up with is .

The original point was that every time the F1 circus gets to the Middle East, the human rights thing comes up and gets beaten to death. This is not the right section of the forum for that. There are plenty of threads in this section that can do the job. They don't often get derailed by talk of F1 either. While I am here though, shady labor practices and sexual oppression are hardly in the same ballpark as what has/is going on in the places you mention. Hell, 'murica has some pretty shady labor practices and equality issues, we should cancel their race.

My original point I was trying to make was that it is upsetting that little is done about the failing of European races. Sorry for starting a mini firestorm.

Well, from a different perspective, I am quite pleased that we don't have Bernie's business in F1 sucking money from my country for a few years already. Let ' em race in rich countries or in countries where there's no such thing as government accountability. I'll gladly watch on TV.

Exactly, if they want to pay extortionate money let them pay! It's not like they can't afford it. Plus I do admit they put lots into making well equipped grand facilities even if the racing might not be as equally dramatic.

F1 is getting too expensive, also why are there plans for an Azerbaijani grand Prix for 2016? Well technically a Eurasian race, but I can bet the average person hasn't heard Azerbaijan. It'll be interesting I guess.

Impossible. None of those places have the money. :D

But seriously... once you get governments and businesses hooked on foreign money... money that often carries caveats and public relations requirements... they will gladly bend over backwards and make concessions to liberal western morals and ethical concerns. The idea is not to simply shower them with money... but to give them business with strings attached. Nothing forces change faster than selfish self-interest.

The races will go where the money is, sadly. Unless the concerned governments are willing to cough up money to run a loss-making business venture simply for the good PR and tourism benefits... (*cough* Shanghai *cough*) ...there's really no reason to keep them going.

European venues don't benefit as much as Asian venues... most of you guys do these things as day trips. But a trip out to an exotic locale in Asia to watch a race is usually a multi-day affair that's good for the local economies there.
