I know I may get hate for this, but I'd actually like a much harder tire than what is already used. It would last longer but the grip would be greatly reduced and make the cars more difficult to control.

If everyone complains about too much grip and driving being too easy, why would they want a softer compound with more grip?
When you have harder tires that don't fall off, you get those races where new tires mean nothing. In those races, people only pit when they are in their next fuel window. I always want to see a race where tires are more important than track position.

I don't know if anyone started the trend, but I want to do this anyway so

CHASE GRID PREDICTIONS!

So later this week we start the 10 race Chase all the way to Homestead in the Championship round. Who do you think will be eliminated early? Who do you think will lose on the last race? And who do you think will lift home the Champion trophy?

My predictions are:

1st round: Out goes Newman, McMurray, Bowyer and Menard.
2nd round: Logano, Keselowski, Hamlin and Gordon.
3rd round: Kenseth, Kurt Busch, Truex Jr. and Harvick.
4th round: Johnson, Dale Jr and Kyle Busch.

CHAMPION: Carl Edwards!

I can dream. right?

Softer doesn't necessarily mean more grip. A lower downforce package like Darlington had with harder tires would be the worst thing that they could do.
No, we'd have Kentucky.

I'd be amazed if NASCAR doesn't go with the low downforce package all of next year. It would take a lot for it not to happen. Even drivers like the HMS and RCR guys who have been a step or two behind with low downforce love it.

Dream on.

My dream would be Edwards winning, but realistically, the title is between Kenseth, Kyle Busch, Harvick, Johnson and Logano.

Eh I don't know I'd say anyone that has 2 or more wins and a high avg of top 5s and top 10s in in the running.

Yeah and Kentucky was a tire that didn't work with the aero package.

I'm pulling for McMurray, Truex, or Gordon. Any of the three would be great.
McMurray is my favorite driver so i hope he does but i think its going to be Joey or Brad as I feel like JGR has a Team Penske from IndyCar feel in Last races

I'll be revealing my Chase grid in the next couple of days in an article. Will post in here when it gets published

You've been really good with predictions because of your journalism inside the sport. I'll take your word for it.

I would love it if McMurray and at least one of the Penske drivers made it all the way to homestead. It would be the perfect storyline after the way the IndyCar championship played out.

Northstar I say this as your friend, cause I too think it'd be pretty cool but... This is NASCAR, I'm sorry.

Chad is actually signed to 2018, not just 2017.
Interesting they said nothing about Chad crew chiefing Johnson past this year. Rumor around has Knaus going to either Kahne or Elliott next year if they don't perform in the Chase.
I thought Jimmie's contract was expiring next year?

He was signed, I saw it on NASCAR.com earlier today when I went to go see if they actually had stats on all the drivers in cool little card form like they did last year. Instead I got to see JJ getting an extension ( like I care), and no they don't have the cool info cards that show rank, wins, top fives and top tens....what a bust.

Guess I'll throw out my guesses:

1st round eliminations: Bowyer, McMurray, Gordon and Menard
2nd round eliminations: Newman, Kurt Busch, Hamlin and Dale Jr.
3rd round eliminations: Harvick, Keselowski, Edwards. and Truex Jr
Homestead finalists: Logano, Kenseth, Kyle Busch and Johnson

CHAMPION: Joey "The Narwhal" Logano 👎

Isn't he kinda cheating though by way of being in closer proximity then us?

I did predict Hamlin joining MWR next season a few months ago, so not everything I hear is right ;)
But the Johnson thing is interesting. Hendrick has shown he will shake up driver-crew chief pairings when his teams have an off year. I believe in 2011 when they all sucked quite a bit he moved around everybody but Knaus the day after Homestead

Ideally I'd like to see Gordon get one last title, but I don't see that happening this year. Unless he can pull off a Tony Stewart 2011 style chase.

My Chase predictions:

Round 1 eliminations: Bowyer, Newman, Gordon and Dale Jr
Round 2 eliminations: McMurray, Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch and Menard.
Round 3 eliminations: Hamlin, Edwards, Johnson and Truex Jr
Homestead final 4: Logano, Kenseth, Harvick and Keselowski

CHAMPION: Harvick

Interesting you have Jr. out after round one.
I actually have Jamie staying in final 8 just because round 2 has Charlotte and Talladega, two of his best tracks.
