I agree, Earth. Maybe it's just me, but I think the IndyCar Series should stick to longer ovals and (of course) road and street courses. Iowa Speedway is more like a short track that feels like a superspeedway. Speed Channel's Robin Miller praised this kind of racing, even wanting to see the series return to Phoenix (which would make one TS happy).

So that's kind of my discussion question. The IndyCar Series can race short ovals, but do you think they BELONG on short ovals?

The cars dont look right running at the track

+1

All the races this year have been boring, ovals (short and long) and road courses. I was talking to one of my friends over MSN (who's a big IRL and F1 fan) and we both agree that the standardized wheelbase that the cars are running this year is to blame for all the single file boredom.

The speeds that the IndyCars run at short tracks make them seem like superspeedways compared to the speeds that stock cars reach at those same tracks.

To Earth and JohnBM01: Short ovals (such as the Milwaukee Mile, Iowa Speedway, Richmond International Raceway) have as much of a place on the IndyCar schedule as any other type of track. The Milwaukee Mile has hosted IndyCar races since 1911. Every short oval on the current schedule attracts great crowds. Iowa Speedway speedway has sold out every single IndyCar race it has hosted. Short ovals attract great crowds because they're drivers' tracks. Drivers can't drive an IndyCar at full throttle around a short oval like they can at big ovals. As a result, drivers have to shift and brake which results in better racing. That challenge of racing on short ovals add to the challenge of the diverse IndyCar schedule.

To TS: The standard 122" wheelbase is a good idea that has saved the teams money and closed up the gap between the big teams and small teams. The real problem is that Firestone designed and built tires for a shorter wheelbase since the teams ran tire tests last year on shorter wheelbases.

But there are only 2 teams that have won this season, Ganassi and Penske, and they're the only cars that can really contend in the race, beyond that, it's quite competitive between AGR, N/H/L and the other teams.

To TS: The standard wheelbase has closed up the lap times. Graham Rahal has already won 2 poles this year. The problem is the tires aren't optimized for a 122" wheelbase which makes it harder to pass. ABC and VERSUS announcers have cited that fact several times. I hope Firestone gives the teams the right tires ASAP.

Me too.

I can't watch anymore of these single file snoozers.

Watkins Glen is the next stop on the IndyCar Series tour, and Scott Dixon got it done at Richmond. Danica finished 5th, the last car on the lead lap.

But as I mentioned... Watkins Glen is next. Turn left and right like a pro to win!

Turn left and right like a pro to win!

There is why I have been failing in life!

Congratulations to Scott Dixon for winning the 2009 SunTrust Indy Challenge at Richmond International Raceway.

I don't congratulate him for anything

Don't congratulate him for anything? Wow, what sportsmanship (or lack thereof)...

Do you not like him?

It isn't a case of I don't like him, i have a lot of respect for the guy because yoou don't win a 500 or a championship without being a good driver.

I harbour great distrust for racing drivers from his part of the world after what Ryan Briscoe did to Danica in last year's 500...dirty, rotten son of a................

So in other worlds, you don't trust Austrailian drivers? I can understanding not trusting the person, but it seems abit too far to distrust everyone from the same contenent. Also, I thought Dixon was from New Zealand.

He is.

To put a line under it, I still haven't got over it

Anyway, onto the Glen

Team-option tools

The IndyCar Series will provide aerodynamic options to teams for 1.5-mile oval racetracks with a goal of improving performance, specifically overtaking.

Tools include tire ramps and sidepod extensions, and brake backing plates for Kentucky Speedway, Chicagoland Speedway, Homestead-Miami Speedway, Kansas Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway. Utilized with other track-specific aero packages, the changes would add about 300 pounds of downforce to the cars and potentially create more overtaking opportunities.

The options will be available for the Meijer Indy 300 presented by Red Baron and Edy's on Aug. 1 at Kentucky Speedway. The IndyCar Series competes on three consecutive road/street courses in July.

In addition to the optional tire ramps and sidepod extensions and the brake backing plates, the 0.125-inch front wing wicker was removed from the aero package for the Indy Japan 300 at Twin Ring Motegi in September.

"The good news is it shouldn't introduce costs back into what we're doing because these are all things teams have had and know what their affect is," Brian Barnhart, president of the competition and operations divisions of the sanctioning Indy Racing League, said when addressing issues of overtaking on the speedways .

The Dallara chassis has been used since 2003, and Honda and Firestone are long-time exclusive suppliers of engines and tires to the series. The only alterations for 2009 were moving to a standard 122-inch wheelbase for ovals and a relocation of the exhaust outlet.

"We have always prided ourselves on doing our best to create the most entertaining and compelling on-track product in motorsports, and I think in the last several years - especially with this version of race car - we've been very successful in achieving that," Barnhart said.

The IndyCar Series is coming off the short-oval portion of the season - Milwaukee, Iowa, Richmond - and for a record sixth week in a row the drivers 1-2 in the championship standings are separated by less than five points (Dario Franchitti plus 1 over Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Scott Dixon). The top five is separated by 60 points.
It's about time! I hope these changes make it easier for the drivers to pass on the big ovals.

This.

But TG and Barnhardt really need to start deciding on what they want to do with their new gen chassis that they've been promising to bring for 2011, the 'ol Dallara isn't getting any younger. (or better looking for that matter)

Unfortunately, new chassis and turbocharged engines may have to wait until 2012 due to the recession.

IndyCar Series at Watkins Glen is in action! Ryan Briscoe currently leads, followed by Wilson and Moraes. Ryan Hunter-Reay is out on the first lap.

One thing I haven't mentioned... what do you all make of Tony George resigning from the IndyCar Series and Indianapolis Motor Speedway (though he still is active in certain positions)?

Awesome job by Justin Wilson and Dale Coyne racing!

Best race of the year IMO!

I think he's still the owner of the IndyCar series and is still on the board of directors at IMS.

Actually the only thing he is involved in is his race team Vision Racing.

Also, congrats to the Dale Coyne Racing team, it was bound to happen eventually.
