This year it was Mazda P2 and somewhat less following the car Van Gisbergen is running with.

Allowing 4, 6 cylinder engines and 2-door body styles. Thankfully they haven't given in to the wide body aero that most touring car series use these days.
 
Awesome battle in GTD... 10 minutes of endurance racing makes you wonder why we still bother with Formula 1.

With that said, P2 has always been a class about survival of the fittest, even more so when it used to be called LMP675, so I'm not surprised most of them are blowing up left and right.

25 just clipped a tire from the 007 in pitlane, that'll be a penalty I guess?
 
When I first saw the DP's in 2010 I thought they were alright. Once they did the changes in 2012 I thought they were great, but once they merged with LMP's I hated them, They just don't mix well together.
 
Halfway through the race and every class is still very much up for grabs. This is what endurance racing is supposed to be.

Well, I guess I'll try to catch a little sleep and hope that those DPs don't haunt my dreams.
 
I dont know which is the true horror: Some hideous Daytona Prototype or Mazda quits.
 
I'm glad I watched ALMS when them DP's were running. Seeing them is bad for your eyesite!

Half way and there are what, 6 prototypes left out of 13 starters? Maybe a GTLM win.

So, M6 crashed at the first corner and its hood flew away. Yellow flag.

I like Daytona Prototypes because I dont compare them to LMP2's.

They were cars built for racing. They didnt try to pass off innovation or development by aping the LMP1's, they were built for non-factory teams to be able to have full pro lineups and still exist at the end of the season. The Gen 1 cars looked pretty awful, Gen 2 improved, Gen 3 looked damn good.

You could frown at the use of them being named Prototypes, but ever since LMP2 was cost capped its not like theyre any more innovative. They just use less stale tech.
 
Well that burning tire will have tons of grip now!
