Got tempted to have a run in the Super Formulas after some encouraging results in Free Practice and test lobby sessions. Eventually set a 1:24.840 in the Toyota variant which I entered into the 15:00 EMEA slot.
15:00 Nations
Reinforcing the pace I picked up was the fact I received door number 5 in an entirely DR A+ lobby with some well-known streamers/YouTube personalities. Grid was mostly dominated by the Honda variant with 13 cars compared to seven Toyotas including myself. Qualifying was largely compromised by having to follow another UK representative on my opening lap plus going too deep at La Caixa and encountering heavy traffic later on. Still, my initial 1:26.028 was good enough to line up 9th for the start. Went with the 5M-8S strategy as it offered blistering pace in practice.
Got bogged down while pulling away on TC 1 and ghosted through the pole-sitting Spaniard as he 'stalled' and was collected by a Frenchman. Ran wide at Turn 1 on cold Mediums while trying to maintain distance between three other cars running on my inside, but survived the initial jostling and began pulling away from the mid-pack while others up ahead served penalties. The Haas-liveried car also lost it coming out of the chicane so by the end of Lap 2 I had already gained two places. Followed the slipstream of another Frenchman until he pitted on Lap 4, but had an awkward moment where a black and orange British car got the slipstream and twice pulled to the inside of me on the approach to Turn 1. The second time he managed to pass, but not after switching across to the outside and making contact with an invisible barrier behind my left-rear tyre. I didn't notice that there was contact until looking through my replay afterwards, but this was enough to hand the Brit a 2-second penalty.
Though I could've done without that move, I was generally happy with how the car was performing and managed to close in on the second Frenchman within a couple of laps after pitting. This started a close and ferocious fight between us, and my impulse to try and pass lead to a couple of scrappy moments on Laps 8-9. First, I almost bin it at Turn 5 after my left-rear touches the gravel on exit. Second, I make a dive on him at La Caixa which results in me going too deep and having to run wide over the astroturf. Third, I try to sling around the outside of Turns 1-2, but run out of space and have to back out as he clears the second apex. More chances for the gold Red Bull-liveried car behind us to capitalise, though as he had just come out of the pits on the Medium tyre he lost touch with us soon enough.
In the process of fighting the Frenchman, I had used up much of my remaining push-to-pass, but still had enough of a boost on Lap 11 to help me pull around the outside of him before Turn 1. Now, there was a chance to pressure not one, but three Medium runners squirming and squabbling amongst themselves. The Bahrain driver I was able to close up to in the first two sectors, though there was a point where I accidentally pushed him forward under braking for Turn 5. The Polish driver dives past the Russian at La Caixa which results in a scrap with the Bahraini driver who then proceeds to almost lose it coming out of the chicane. This was my chance to get a better run down the start-finish straight to take 5th with only a tiny bit of boost left. Last lap was spent hunting the Russian down to the line.
The only other time I remember taking part in an FIA Nations Super Formula race was at Catalunya, in the Toyota variant, when I had yet to transition from analog stick to motion controls. Aside from the traffic (a 1:25 would have definitely been possible in qualifying), the Lap 1 chaos and occasional bits of understeer, today's run is probably the best I have ever had in the SF19. Scoring between both championships is turning out to be rather consistent, too; there's only one point between my 5th place here and my 5th place in Manufacturers the other week!
