I would assume the proximity of cars may be what causes the game to view corner cutting differently. Cutting while near an opponent would be more use to a cheater.
Surely track limits are track limits, regardless of whether or not you're nearby another opponent? Cut the corner to gain speed advantage through the corner or cut the corner to gain speed advantage and dive past another car, you're still exceeding track limits.

I don't make the game, I'm just reporting my observations. My normal clean line on lap 1 earned penalties, while running a safer line on lap 1 got me a clean race.
Yeah I'm not judging your assumptions, just questioning why they would make the penalty system work like that. Makes no sense to me.

I believe the penalty system gives a waiver to anyone who is physically pushed off track by another car and is forced to cut/extend the track as a result.

Example: Clip #7 of IOTW Episode 31

First time round, the Aston completely skips the Catalunya chicane and takes a 5 second penalty for it. Second time round, the Jag trailing the Aston runs into him and pushes the Aston wide. The Aston once again skips the chicane and finished 3rd without a track penalty, as the game gave the Aston a waiver for getting pushed off.

Obviously, the game can’t differentiate between someone legitimately rejoining the track and someone exploiting the living hell out of the waiver.

Decided to go again and jumped into slot 3. Door 15 this time. Mostly clean air and no pens on qualifying and finished Q5.

A bit of jostling early on but things had settled by the first time through Mulsanne and I was sitting p5 with a Genesis in p4 and a 1.5 second gap to p6. Flashed lights and bump drafted p4 but he was having none of it and started to take defensive lines, even though I made no attempt to pass. Cue about 4 laps of needless swapping of positions. Eventually he took a 1 second penalty for cuts at Tertre Rouge and I cleared out into p4. Over 6 seconds behind p3 and 13 seconds behind p1 with around 2 and a half laps left.

Ran purple sectors up until The Porsche curves on lap 6 and had pulled back to 4.5 seconds behind 3rd into the last lap. As we head down the last section of Hunadieres I am 3 seconds behind p3 and running purple sectors again. Lo and behold, the yellow flag comes out. P1 has binned it at Mulsanne and P2 and 3 are now battling for first. I go past the former leader in his AMG as he is making his way out of the sand and commence mission impossible to try and catch the 2 Supras 3 seconds ahead. By the time we get to the Ford chicane I am within 1.5 seconds but the line is just too close. 3rd place, podium finish, CRB and 147 points.

That’ll do nicely. Thanks Le Mans!

Yeah, for the Manufacturers Series round tonight, I'll definitely need to do some practice with the BB more towards the front. My best time is just slightly over four minutes flat with BB set at +2, but I think I could afford to move it forwards one or two notches, given how many more straights there are at Le Mans versus Fuji. I'm especially concerned because the top ten times seem to be drastically faster than my best time, so I'll definitely need to try moving the BB forwards a bit.

I ran the whole race at -1 in the Aston last night, tire wear is not an issue at all. And I was pushing really hard it the big braking zones.

I'll try -1, then. I did hear that Le Mans is a bit of an inverse compared to Fuji, where it's the rear tires that'll be taking on more wear. That said, I definitely plan to move the BB back to +2 for that round at the Nurburgring, as well as the round at Sardegna C. I think that's a reasonable setting, considering that there are far less straightaways at those two circuits, at least compared to the curves.

EDIT: On the other hand, I think I'll set it to -1 for the rounds at Tokyo Expressway South and Sardegna A.

Good luck everyone!

I believe the penalty system gives a waiver to anyone who is physically pushed off track by another car and is forced to cut/extend the track as a result.

It’s important to understand the track you are racing, and how this works. Certain turns like Interlagos turn one are made so much easier to race when you realize what to do if you are on the racing line and get divebombed.
There, you open up the steering and cut turn 2. Not only do you stay ahead, but your opponent gets a pen usually.
This is as it should be.
If you get hit and try to hold track limits you end up blocking the track, getting tangled up getting sr down etc.
Runoff areas exist for a reason, and irl they get used during racing.
At Interlagos it makes it nice because you don’t have to defend into turn one anytime your opponent is within .6...
If they dive and hit you they do you a favor, if you know how it works...

Such conciderations are made in real life as well. GT World had an issue at Magny Course race 2 last weekend. A driver had to ignore track limits for safety reasons but made a position in doing so. The stewards awarded the position judging safety was more important than the "unfair" gain in position.

Started 5th. Got to 4th going up to Indianapolis before I got hit off. Ended up in a battle somewhere else a few laps later and got spun around at the hairpin. Came up behind the #1 driver in a BMW who was barging into two other cars in that battle before I got spun out. When I went to pass him on the straight he was weaving everywhere so he got sent to the realm at the hairpin. Ended up bringing back a fun battle for 10th on the last lap and gained 110 DR out of it.

Finishing time was 28:13. I did a 28:14 myself in a lobby. I'm going until I get a result.

Manufacturer slot 1

Door number 2 (unfortunately)
Q6 (Butchered my one attempt)

Struggled at the start with the cold tyres, immediately overtaken by 3 cars, who seemed to have better race pace. Down to P9

Lost the slip (RIP). From there on it was a heck of a lonely race. P7 got a penalty and then quit. So I was up to P8

End of lap 6. P2 and then P6 came in to the pits. Put me up to P6.

Cross the line in P6, one of the guys who overtook me earlier, got a 1 minute penalty (wrong tyres).

P5
146 points
+860 DR.

Not sure if I'll go again. Currently 146 doesn't count as one of my two highest scores, but with the uncertainty of upcoming rounds, tempted to take my points and move on.

Car #20 and I qualified 4th without slipstream, managed to get up to 5th on lap 1. Bit of back and fourth through the race to finish in 5th, and should have been 4th of not for a 0.5 second penalty on the last lap. Also a very interesting attempt to cheat from the car behind on the last lap which fortunately failed. Good luck everyone who's going again or yet to race.

Similar thing with me but I use a controller, fortunately was nowhere near anyone when I lost steering, if I didn't know better would have said oil on track, was expecting a disconnect. Everthing was charged up so not sure what happened. Finished top 10 after qualifying 7th. Do for me tonight.
Good luck everyone

Was maybe a little too cautious in qualifying as I was scared of getting a penalty but started 7th which i was still happy with.

Car in front weirdly pitted end of first lap to swap from Hards to Mediums , then next lap someone in 3rd binned it. I was basically running 5th the entire race, 4 seconds behind 4th and 3 seconds ahead of 6th. Just concentrated on keeping it tidy. Then end of lap 6, 1st and 2nd both came into to pits as it turned out they were running on Mediums, so all of a sudden I was in 3rd. Got round the last lap penalty free for a top 3. Best result so far by a long way. :gtpflag:

Oh and my 8 year old son made me a livery and made me promise I would use it for this race!

Chevrolet. 8th for 127 points.

Conflicted about going again. Qualified in 10th with a very meh lap. Car ahead bolted ahead of me in the final few turns (which I'm horrible at) of the out lap so no slipstream to help me along. Lap was well below my practice times.

Race was pretty unspectacular. Gained a few spots. Lost some because of a pen. Was in 6th on the last lap and binned myself at the slowest right hand turn (useless at corner names) so slumped to 8th and finished there.

Overall, feel a little disappointed about the outcome but not sure what I really expected. Felt like I was overly cautious in the race and can't help myself when it comes to making some bizarre decisions around turn in points. Will see how the evening goes and if I get the enthusiasm to go again.

So my race just went to hell after my steering wheel decided to go berserk during the first sector and become hyper sensitive. The slightest bit of turning was being interpreted as full lock. Currently sat in the pits waiting for this to end now. :indiff:

Oh thats brutal. So sorry to hear.
