Hardtop vettes with removeable panels have been around since...uh, the C3 generation?

C3, C4, C5, C6, C7 and now C8 have all featured some version of it. It's possible/practical because the Corvette has never had a unibody so the roof isn't necessary for structural purposes.

They are making hybrids to try and ease people into EV's when/if the combustion engine is killed off.
