Audi accidentally leaks a new concept car based on the original Audi TT that is set to debut at the Munich Auto Show

An official disclaimer says the car shown is a concept vehicle that is "not available as a production vehicle", but the design looks far more production ready than some recent outlandish concepts, so there is potential for a production version.

Indeed, Audi CEO Gernot Döllner has previously said the company would not "show studies any more", suggesting it plans to launch a production version of every show car it unveils from now on.

More details will be given tomorrow evening, when Audi officially unwraps the new concept - as confirmed on social media by its designer Massimo Frascella, under the tagline 'strive for clarity' - which hints that the concept will set the tone for a new minimalist design language that could be rolled out across Audi's line-up under Frascella's stewardship.

As previously reported by Autocar, the concept will preview an all-new look for the German manufacturer.

Döllner previously said that the design would be “a bold step for the brand” and that it would “would look to the future and the strengths of Audi design, for clarity and to bring that to the future, not copying the past”.

It's a bit disappointing how similar it looks to the Jaguar concept, especially if this is the direction Audi decides to go in with their future cars
 
I don't get the appeal of boxy cars. Not gonna lie, I do like the Hyundai Santa Fe's look.
 
Seems more like a baby R8. I love the boxy Audis from the Seventies and early Eighties.
The grilles of the current Audis are all over the place. The blandness of past Audis have more character.

I wonder about the powertrain though

If it's not an EV, maybe there's a chance that Audi Sport comes back to GT3 racing with it - if zero commonality with the Temerario isn't an issue for VAG

The imminent offical reveal should answer this

It's called the Audi TT Momentum 2.0 and I gotta say I love the momentum and 2.0 aspects of the name because that's what it looks like. It looks like a continuation of the Auto Union design language that has made Audi so successful for the past 30 years.



That Car Design World account must have connections because they publish official photos way before any of the major journalists. Poor quality images that Autocar scraped off social media:

I absolutely love it. I mean, look at this design lineage, it literally goes back to Day 1 for Audi:

Honestly I think Audi has one of the strongest design languages in the entire industry but several of their most recent concepts have strayed far from the herd, and over the past decade their graphical elements have gotten overly complex and way too aggressive compared to their best examples. I mean, what on earth was this:

And we mustn't forget Audi greatest design of all time, the elegant, simple, light, sporty, near-perfect car that all cars wish they could be:

Who would've thought that a little tiny hatchback could share so much DNA with pre-war Auto Union streamliners? And yet it literally was a streamliner, famous for its construction, design, efficiency. Excellent in virtually every way.

Its official name is actually called the Concept C. There's a possible likelyhood it could go into production by 2027

Apparently Audi's current Chief Creative Officer is Massimo Frascella who was previously at JLR. He designed the Discovery, Defender, and Velar. He left JLR in January 2024. The Jaguar Type 00 was revealed in December 2024. According to this Autopian article, Frascella drew the initial sketches of the Type 00.

I heard that the initial sketch of this car was done by Massimo Frascella before he departed for Audi. Frascella was McGovern’s right-hand man at Land Rover for decades before Ian Callum retired and McGovern used the opportunity to bring both the Jaguar and Land Rover studios together. So maybe that’s where this Range Rover influence comes from.

This explains why the Concept C is so similar to the Type 00

I looked at Frascella's Instagram and he posted a picture of the Rosemeyer concept, Type C, and the RSQ concept at what appears to be some internal Audi event, maybe an interval reveal of the concept car? Those three cars are likely the main influences for this concept

 
BIG BRICK styling works so much better here as it's literally not like 30 feet long
It's also following the cues of a long-standing design language and applying them to a modern vehicle, rather than the reverse of trying to force modern design language into mimicing the design cues of a specific car like Jaguar did.

Interesting, it shows how context matters

Let's that they're mostly identical designs

Since the Concept C recalls an important car for Audi's lineup, it should be way more successful than the Type 00 that breaks away with everything Jaguar had done up to its reveal
 
I'd like to make a point for others' introspection, since it has been all over the internet and is both wrong and annoying as hell:

If you think this thing resembles a Jaguar, that means Jaguar's experiment worked on you.

J Mays lives again!

Part of me thinks this feels like an emergency backup plan for the EV Cayman/Boxster development program. I think its entirely possible nobody wants an EV Boxster and yet an EV TT makes just as much sense as any TT ever made.

I think I like it. I'll be curious to see how its translated into a production vehicle...but going off the very subtle variance in the original TT concept to gen 1 TT, I'd guess the car you can buy will look about 85% like this. I hope it's priced like the TT always has been.
