since taking his maiden grand prix win in Hungary last July, Piastri has won five of the last 17 races - one more than his team-mate and two more than Verstappen in that time
The form driver, most wins over an extended period (a whole season in the old days) and currently in the best all-round car - seems people are justified in calling Oscar the favourite.

German Bild announced Perez as confirmed for Cadillac from 2026 on with a huge sponsordeal making it possible.
I‘m pretty sure his sponsorship backing is what kept him in the second Red Bull seat so long. But anyway, it‘s going to be interesting to see how things will be with Cadillac. I‘d still consider him a skilled driver at the end of the day.

Sponsorship probably got him and keeping him in F1 his whole career.
If I remember correctly he's sponsored by Telmex, and they throw around insane amounts of money to get drivers into seats at the top of their respective disciplines; rumor is that Colapinto's got Telmex backing too, which is probably why he's going to be in Doohan's seat sooner rather than later.

Isn't Telmex usually a sponsor for Mexican drivers though? Apart from maybe Montoya at Mexico City in 2008 (Which I suspect was more down to Felix Sabates then anything else), I don't recall any exceptions to that.

Similarly, there's a large belief he's also what keeps the Mexico GP going; I believe they announced a 3 year extension right in time for this news about Perez being confirmed for Cadillac in Miami.

Having done a bit more digging around it looks like Colapinto's actually sponsored by Mercado Libre, a massive e-commerce company in Latin America (and originating from Argentina as well), so they'd have no problem covering the absurd cost Alpine paid for Colapinto's "reserve driver" services. I think the rumor mostly stemmed from a few of Checo's other sponsors also backing Colapinto in between seasons, and it was just assumed it was a package that included Telmex as the big-money sponsor (though I think Mercado Libre blows them out of the water in terms of having money to burn on race car stuff, from the looks of it).

Yeah Carlos Slim of Telmex, etc. is involved in the GP and in F1TV (I think not only Mexico but all of middle and south America) so he is pushing for drivers attracting audiences and viewers there.

Has anyone criticized Verstappen for developing a car that only he can drive? I think he deserves criticism for that. It's going to hurt him this year with 0 help against the two McLarens

Also it's really sad to see Perez somehow being a hot commodity in the driver market, while great talent like Colton Herta and Alex Palou don't get a chance

I don't think Max deserve to be criticized for something like that. IMO that should be directed at Red Bull as a team and not the drivers. At the end of the day, I fully agree that his input does influence the development direction of the car but again red bull should carry the blame for not making sure that the car is well balanced and drivable for both drivers. Look at McLaren for example, their car is balanced enough that both drivers are able to extract the potential from the car albeit not without difficulty if you listen to Lando, but they are still fairly even.

In the case of red bull, I think they know Max is their star. As long as they make sure the car works for him, that's all that matters. I'm almost positive that they probably believe that because he literally won both championships just by himself in 2023, if he can keep winning, surely they will be able to stay ahead.

I'm with you on the latest rumors about Perez. F1 can be a cruel world for drivers. You have to have some undeniable talents to have a shot and even then, without the proper financial backing and connections you might not even make it.

He's been complaining about their car for at least a year now, criticizing him because of what Red Bull develop would be a bizarre. Should we also criticize Alonso because of Aston Martin's **** box?

Perez is no top talent but he's a good journeyman driver for a new team, plus he's got some serious backing and is really popular. It's a no brainer for Cadillac imo.

Considering he literally has been telling them the car has had issues for YEARS (Since 2023 as it turns out), I disagree. The only reason it wasn't seen as big of a deal then was because the car advantage over everyone else was so massive that it masked all of it.

The TEAM should be blamed for thinking they didn't need Newey and apparently, not even Verstappen's input.

Well, now that you mention it... when Alonso joined AM in 2023, driving the car mostly developed by Vettel, the first five races netted him four podiums and a fourth place. In 2024 the first five races got him five points finishes. This year it's been two retirements and three "also ran" positions. In other words, Alonso being Alonso just about every time he switches teams.

Sad thing is, it was the one time where he actually made a good decision after the Contract BS with Alpine.

It's also abit insane that by this point of the year, it's Lance Stroll that's left him behind in points.

Surprised 6 was even allowed considering Briatore has been wanting to oust him.

It was probably the minimum amount of races for a sponsor agreement. Wouldn't want to have to give any of that money back, after all!

I'm glad they even gave him a chance, but the results speak for themselves. I don't think Colapinto is the next top driver either but at least he impressed a lot of teams.

Aussie bias here. But I still think Jack has the talent. You don't win six races in F2 by accident. It just sucks that he was put in a situation where he was basically doomed from the start. Hopefully he finds some success somewhere else like GT3's or WEC.

Yeah I feel like RB made us normalize treating rookies like garbage a bit here. Jack has an incredible amount of pressure on his shoulders. Aside of the usual pressure as a rookie he also hass a boss (Briatore) who has made him feel unwanted from day 1 and the entire media who have written him off before he even started.
I think under those circumstances it's actually astonishing Jack has been able to show something - he just out-qualified his teammate. I think he deserves a full season - he wont get one.

I agree on Palou but that ship has sailed. Herta doesn't seem to be committed to a move even if he gets enough points for a superlicence, and he's a bit off that at the moment in the Indycar standings. Perhaps he needs to concentrate on his day job for the moment.

Not sure where else to post this but more musical chairs at Alpine. Maybe it has something to do with the driver swap.

So, Doohan in the wall next race and Gasly wins?
Doohan? I have a feeling you misunderstand the resignation here. This'll be the classic "if Doohan goes, I go" kind of fallouts here as Briatore is pushing for Colapinto and Oakes wants to keep Doohan.
