3D PS3 Titles Will Suffer Visual Downgrade, GT5 a Casualty?

I think it will only render a frame for each eye, but it will still be 60 fps, just 30 fps for each eye.

Its not really an issue GT5 already runs 1080@60fps. As long as your not playing in 3D this should remain the same :|

All this for a silly expensive gimmick. The sooner this latest 3d trend dies in a ditch next to all the previous ones the better.

Even if there's a visual downgrade for 3D, the downgrade only applies if you're playing the game in 3D.

So... if you're playing in 2D, the graphics will not be affected. 👍

I agree. Alrealdy people have multiple PS3s, I have 2 (3), so why not haiving 1080p with 120FPS.. or 2 PS3s with 1080p, steady 60 FPS and more AA? I would want that!

Might only be games that are already out that are getting downgraded.

Then all games coming out with 3D will be like the good graphics we know and love.

The problem is can it be done that 2 or more PS3 can be used as a slave device and effectively rely on mulitple PS3 processing but display the graphics rendering of multiple units from only a single 1x HDMI master console. Sony have stated 3D is possible on all PS3 models but it is highly unlikely this combined networking for performance will happen although I wish it would.

The example referred to used HDMI output x4 into video professional genlocking hardware that combined those into one seperate image.

It could be possible. MY Computer has SLI video cards , meaning 2 work as one, and only one cable is connected to the monitor. So why not PD makes a patch for 2 PS3s work together and with one HDMI? could be

Because SLI GFX cards are designed to be able to do that, its not likely PS3 was designed with that in mind.
Hey who knows but it seems very unlikely my friend.

Could I connect up 2x Microwaves to heat/cook things quicker, lol.

UGH, forget 3D, just release the game. Sony are idiots, they make more than enough money already without delaying this game to flog more 3D TVs. They need to wind their necks in and look at the real world and the potential market. I doubt many of them will even bother with 3D for years yet.

Stop it with the gimmicks and just give us a good game!

I bought my ps3 when gt5p came out, was going to get it anyway, lots of exciting games, blu ray player,

Got me a 50 inch HD tv soon after, gt5p looks better in 1080p,

got me a wheel when the time trial came out, wanted to see how good I was against the rest of the world, turns out I'm avarage.

and I'm started saving for a 3d tv. should have enough in about 5 months

if they build it for gt5, I will buy it for gt5

They don't, actually. Not the games division.

I can't even use 3D TV's because I have a lazy eye, I want to know who invented this crap!

Something which seems to be a running trend here is that people are saying, 'oh its ok because this will only apply to GT5 in 3D mode, the 2D setting will be fine'. Basically how do we know?

What if GT5 is coded to run at a hardware level which can take 3D regardless of whether or not you enable it? You are going to have a visually compromised game! Or even worse a functionality compromised one with less cars on the track, etc.

Another thing which is worrying is that Wipeout HD is no where near the graphical complexity of GT5. Seeing as it had to suffer such huge visual concessions to get 3D to work I don't believe that PD can wave a magic wand and have no degredation on the same hardware with their 3D setup.

Robin.

Yeah, and who invented stereo music, how stupid was that as some people are deaf in one ear, all music should be mono.

lmao, yeah like Kaz would leave half the processing capability unused when the initial majority of his audience are playing his vision.

Lots of people think the overall graphics of the 2D games will get lowered as well. This is not the case.

For 3D they would lower the resolution, take out specified objects (or run them as a LOD model), and take off post processes like motion blur and such (since that comes "naturally" with 3D).

That can easily be done without taking out anything from the 2D version of it.

GT5 is already pushing the hardware to its limits in 2D, I doubt that just lowering the res, framerate and removing a few objects is going to bring it down to a useable level.

If other devs are only barely being able bring their games 'down' to work with 3D and they use something like half the PS3's power in 2D how is PD going to do it?

Pressure from the top, Sony might demand certain things to push 3D tech and sell more TV's. Forcing the dev's to make using the 3D version more appealing to consumers.

Robin.

Post processing uses up a lot of ram, so taking that out and lowering the resolution (down to 720p 2xAA) you will have enough RAM to be able to render the scene "twice" one for each eye while having that hardware limit they've had all along.

I would think that adding 3D tech would be akin to the use of split screen and online game play.

It is a well known fact that games that support split screen have to lower their graphics down to compensate, the same goes for online. The single player for Killzone 2 has effects and little details that were held back from the online mode, the difference is not big but it is there.

Go play GT4 in split screen and you will see a huge difference in graphics compared to playing alone. Those features do not interfere with the main mode.

Why would GT5 suffer a graphics downgrade if they could simply give the option to switch it off :dopey: Why would they compensate for 3D tech when it is not in use.

If the single player modes were left untouched before what reason would PD have to change it. :)

People need to stop doing pixels calculations and misinform others. All there is to do for 3D is to repeat each frame with a second separate Z-buffer at the end of the pipeline, sure it might lower the performance due to the fact that you cannot pre-process obvious occlusion before the texturizing stage, but you won't lose half the picture quality. I'm no fan of 3D, but I'm no fan of false information more.

What an excellent reply.

I don't know what the fuss is all about. I was reliably informed a few weeks ago that GT5 will ship in two versions, 2D & 3D. So if your fortunate to own a 3DTV you buy the 3D version of GT5. The quality of the 2D version will not be affected whatsoever.

As for 3DTVs being a gimmick and im afraid this is going to be the future. Now I expect the sales of these TVS to be rather poor at first due to the cost and the economy. However in 3yrs time these will become affordable like full HDTVS currently are. No doubt in the future we shall all own ultra high definition, 3DTVS that will not require glasses. You cannot halt the progression of technology however much you complain!

I'm sure if you had 3D enabled you wouldn't be able to do split screen. Online play surely will support 3D as well. There is no reason not too.

Also, the detail in KZ2 that you mentioned has zero change from the SP experience. All the exact same effects still exist and with no hitches. In fact the MP can stand to a lot of grenade explosions and still maintain around 30fps.

One last thing. There WONT be two versions of the game. 3D built into the game engine. They wont sell two different versions.

Any comments I have made regards pixel count dropping to below 720p native are totally founded as I have also showed LOTS of games run below 720p native to maintain framerate and are then upscaled. Its blindingly obvious dual 720p for 3D is much higher than 1080p 2D so something has to give.

60fps is a must for GT if 3D mode is less than 60fps then they shouldnt of bothered. Kotaku was one place to comment at CES the 3D versions seemed to have more jaggies which would confirm reduced resolutions being used for 3D.

This is absolutely true, although I have to say that when I speak to people about High Def movies and gaming, everybody gets it, and they all either have it or would have it if they could afford the hardware and/or subscriptions.

When it comes to 3D, I really don't hear many people getting too excitied for it. People either don't know about it, or if they do know about it, they don't see the point or are just not that bothered. Now, this is just a small group of people I know, and it doesn't necessarily reflect the general opinion of the entire population.

I guess like many others, I'd rather see effort being made to increase the quality of the standard picture first. They can't even get 2D images good enough yet, especially in games.

Who gives a stuff. GT5 could be in 320x240 and 256 colours and I wouldnt care.

It's the game that counts, hence why I'm still plaing GT2 on my PSP instead of GTPSP. All that matters is the game play.
