It's 47 years old...in three more years the Mustang will turn 50...and that's not 50 years of on and off production like the Challenger, Camaro and Charger...that's 50 continuous years of Mustang 5 generations:

First Gen(1964-1973):

Seems like the 6th Gen 'Stang should arrive to celebrate the 50th birthday. BTW, 47 years makes Mustang the longest continuously produced muscle car ever, and 4th longest produced American car. (Behind the Jeep Wrangler/Willies (1941-present), Ford F150 (1948-present), Corvette (1953-present) and Ford Falcon (1960-present)
 
No offense, but I'm not sure why it's 50th birthday suddenly warrants a 3-year-early thread. It's like making a thread now for Lamborghini's 50th year, or Maserati's 100th year, even though neither happens til' 2013/2014 either just like the 911's 50th as well. :ouch:

The Mustang isn't a muscle car, btw....

Nope. It's still the 5th generation. Like the Mach 1, Boss and Fastback were all technically first generation Mustangs.

McLaren: You're right, and really Corvette's 60th and the Viper's 20th Anniversaries are before the Mustang's big birthday, but...I don't know...There's just something about a muscle car surviving for this long. the 70s were a little hard on the Mustang II, but, it's still alive today. True, the stock, production V8 Mustang is incredibly underpowered compared to the Camaro, Charger and Challenger, but, that's why we have the Shelby GT500 and the Boss 302.

Last I checked, the V8 Mustang is all of what, 20hp down at most?

Yeah, incredibly underpowered. Especially when you realize the Mustang is several hundred pounds lighter, it's definitely the slowest of the bunch.

A Mustang is not a muscle car. It is a pony car; it coined the term. Muscle cars were 2-door RWD, 4+ passenger, mid or full-size cars with large V8s. Pony cars were the opposite, compact with a sporty image.

Apparently Ford are planning to celebrate 50 years of the Mustang by ditching the 50 year old suspension :)
 
Well seeing how America likes to sell their cars with years that haven't actually been had yet, the 50th edition wouldn't be as far away as everyone thinks :p.

Too bad that 50 year old suspension keeps the car even with an M3 and its modern suspension. 👍

Because Evo totally rave about it and have a hardened sports coupe article putting the M3 agains the Mustang and C AMG in every second issue....

The latest one is starting to get things right, but its not in M3 territory.

Reading is overrated....base M3 vs the Mustang 5.0 GT is what I said, not the upmarket model...

Not to mention the Laguna Seca is the track focused model, funny how it wins a fastest lap shootout. Would you prefer to drive a track focused racer-ish car or a BMW? I'd take the Beemer.

So? Take the $30k GT, spend $4k or less on suspension, wheels, tires, and be as fast as an M3. On 50 year old suspension.

Edit: Oh, the Boss is only $36,000 anyway. Yeah...

Still stone age technology no matter which way you slice it. Put IRS into a Mustang and you'll find it'd be a hell of a lot faster than it is now too.
