Well.
I am taking a Statistic class for my math requirement in college.
The same class requires you to make a research project with the solely objective for it to have any statistical value.
For that purpose, she gave us the option to pick any topics for our research; and I picked to make a GTP Lap Time Competition.

For this reason I want everybody who wants to participate to please sign up on this thread. Your cooperation will be of great aid for me. I will even make a pie chart, histogram, stemplots and the like of all the posted results.

I am still thinking about the metodology of the project, but so far There is going to be only one car to race (picked by me), and I will use some tracks at random. The car will be picked at random too. Dont ask me this right now. I am still trying to figure out how I am going to pick a car at random from the GT3 Dealer section.

This post is going to get a lot of edits.
-Due to some votes, the use of SIM tires has been rejected.
-Instead I am going to use the tire type. (including rally tires).
-A car will be picked at random from the GT3 Dealer section.
-Also, 7 tracks will be chosen at random and the races will be done in them.
-The car settings will be brought by me, to avoid the presence of custom settings so that everybody is on the same boat.
-Deadline is met when 30 people sign-up.
-Correction: Only 3 tracks will be used now, due to the fact that each track racer will race on the same tracks with 3 different kind of tires. T1's, middle T's, Last T's.

So, just post here if you want to participate.

I've never been part of pie graph much less a histogram! Count me in!

hmm. sounds like a fun project. count me in :)

You can put me down, but you have to give me time to find time to do the race.

I'll participate. You're gonna need all the help you can find in order to get 30 participants.

Thirty?

Sounds like you're gonna need all of us. I'm in.

I'm in.....

Thirty participants; that's a tall order. Count me into this, maybe diversity will help my racing...

I will help out, but could I ask some questions/make some suggestions?

First, 30 player?

If thats the case I would suggest you only do one track and have all 30 race that track once.

As for car and track selection, I say you pick an arcade race car. It will keep the race fun and it will keep it even since no tuning can be done.

As for track, I suggest you pick your personal favorite. Its not like you teacher will know its your favorite and because of that, your track selection will still come out as objective.

One thing that I wonder about though, is the number of players and the number of races.

Boom is rarely lucky enough to see over 30 in the weekly, and thats one of the most well established race series on this site.

Do you absolutely have to have 30 racers and 7 tracks?

I suggest you use the #'s for one to influence the other...

if you get 30 racers, do 1 race/track.

if you get 10 racers, do 3 races/tracks.

Good luck, and be sure to let us know when your interested in doing this.

But remember, count me in.

Yes, I have to have 30 racers, though not all 30 of them are going to participate. From that list of 30, only 15 are going to be picked at random. They will be chosen from a list of randomly computer generated numbers.

As for the pick of tracks. I cant pick them. They have to be picked randomly too. I will number every GT3 track, counting from 00 to the total number of existing tracks. I will designate each track a number, and they will be randomly picked. Same thing I am going to do with the GT3 dealer section. Thats why I cant use them from arcade. Every car will be named from 00 to # of total cars. Then, I will pick one at random. Thats why I cant pick them by favoritism. Sure, the teacher wont know it, but it will risk the validity of my project.

I'm in, but i think you should definitly lower the amount of participants needed, i don't think youll get 30 too easy.

can i join up too?

i don't think it should matter but i'm using the Japanese ver. GT3 in japan.

i've been trying to get on Boom's weekly series but the PM's keep getting messed up or something and i can't compete there yet. I figure this way i can race and compare my times with other people around the world.

if it's cool, mail or pm me. thanks!

30 racers. regardless... I will be happy to do my part.

As for cars... I think that you could just as easily number all of the cars in arcade mode. There would be less to number and a more likely chance of the racers getting to race a car that would actually be fun to drive... any way, good luck setting this up and dont hesitate to keep the racers posted on your plans.

I'll help you out. I've taken a lot of stats classes. It definitely helps to be interested in what you're working on.

i'll help
count me in

bbandit to the rescue

I have also taken a college level statistics course. It was only hard on one level... the damned calculator. I never took the extra hours to do the classes on how to use that thing. It was one of your regular old TI ?? (eighty something)

The rest of the course was interesting a in way.

However, for the reasons of being as scientific as possible in your experiment, I would suggest you are the only person to do any work on this project.

When is this sucker due, because if your really gonna do this setup, then you may actually be pretty close to getting your full roster. Im guessing about half way there.

Good luck with it...

Hey maybe you could have everyone do 2 races. 2 cars, 2 tracks. All random just as before only in 2 testing sessions.
anyway... bye.

Have you thought of asking at other boards about this? You would definately get your 30 racers if you did that.

11 to go.

Gotta catch em´all!

Sorry for being late.
To Boombexus; I have already made two threads, one in the rumble strip and in GT3.

A thought (or two) on the importance of random selection in statistical studies:

When it is not practical to use data from an entire population for a study, and instead data from a sample of the population is used, it is essential that the sample be selected randomly. Use of a random sample will always give a less precise result than a study of the entire population. It therefor makes little sense to enlist 30 drivers, and then select 15 of them and discard the remainder.

On another note, "descriptive" statistics would best be applied to a "naturally" occuring phenomenon, i.e. one that is not contrived by the investigator. For example, you could analyze the results of the Weekly Race Series. When you, the investigator, specify the cars, tracks, drivers, etc, it is really a designed experiment. In an experimental design, it is not usual for the independent variables to be selected randomly. Indeed, there are specific procedures and criteria for selecting them in order to obtain the most efficient design. For example, if your experiment is to determine the relative significance of car, driver, and track on lap time, you might select a relatively tight track like Cote, and a relatively loose track like Midfield, and cars of widely different hp, downforce etc. The point is that the experiment is more likely to produce a worthwhile result if these are selected purposefully rather than randomly.

Anyway, just some food for thought. Let me know when it's time to race. :)

Yeah, but just look at it.
The chances that Boombexus keeps track of every weekly race results. Plus, making the use of true random, would be over my limit. I would need to have the list of all GTP active members and randomly select them. You see. I am trying to keep it small.

I think what boombexus was saying is try posting on different boards like GT3 times or "by the numbers" they may have people willing to help you out that don't use GTP

Might as well add me to the list as well ;)

The competition is still going. Dont worry. Ill give the official car and tracks on tuesday.

You will need slow drivers too :O. Count me in! :D

hrmm.....I'm kinda shady on the details, but count me in!

LOL
