Here is my idea. Why not have a single thread forum for chatting, like the HMRCWG but make it so that whatever you post in there doesn't go on your post count, kinda like the Test Forum.

Anyone is welcome to make a thread like that in the Test Forum, if they wish.

Yeah, whatever. Just stay the **** out of the exclusion thread!

Don't come around here no mo', ah, oh, oh, ah.

Why not make a HMRCWG thread, then have specific chat times during certain times of the day. The thread is opened by a mod when it is time time to chat, and then closed between assigned chat times.

I thought about doing that with an actual chat room, but I know I don't want to be forced to be on the site at any certain time, and I don't expect our moderators to do that, either.

Well, I have an idea...I donno if it works with UBB or not...

At Mazda-talk.com, there's an IM system between members. It pops up this new window with an IM box and you can talk to someone else on the board. It's nice.

Nah enough of the compromise ideas? We need a real live :gtplanet: Chat.. and just have a computer :computer: moderator that picks up offensive language it, and allow Mods to sign in and keep an eye out if they so wish?

Our last chat room had a simple swear filter - but that's not really the essential problem with having one.

There were imposters and ruthless spamming. I don't want to talk about this any longer - moving on...

Ok so let members only use the chat? And perhaps members with only a certain amount of posts..

Only members could use the chat - they were changing their name after they logged into the chat room.

What do you mean there was imposters?
People were changing their names to appear as another member who wasn't logged into the chat room at the same time.

If there was, don't you think I would have done something about it at the time? ;) :P

(why would you morons use other peoples names)
It was most notably being used by people posing to be me.

you seem a little crusty lately :P

I just thought there was some sort of code you could put in so that people cant change names, like some kinda patch you can put on the chat thingy

I am - I've felt irritable all week, and I'm tired of being reminded of what a mistake that chat room was.

The chat was a free, remotely hosted service, that I had almost no control over.

But the thing is it shouldn't have been a mistake

It's gotta work somehow, and can't be that hard to get working with the right settings?

Okay, my apologies for bringing this topic up again, but it seems like nobody took notice of this very sensible suggestion by Ryan... I think it's a fantastic idea! (Though I'm almost 100% sure that vBulletin doesn't support it). :melting:

It is a good idea, but as you have already speculated, vBulletin doesn't support such a feature. (And even if it did, I don't think many people would actually use it instead of a real instant messenger service, with endless more features.)
