Hello. It must be said that despite this being my first post over in :gtplanet: and recently having made my account, I have been eyeing and lurking around the forums for a long time, since 2010 in fact! As for myself, I began playing Gran Turismo at a young age and got very invested in the series; having not even finished GT4, I went back and completed the first three main games in the series in just around a year or so.

With GT5 and 6's online racing, I felt right at home; had my share of fun, met a lot of great people and even found myself winning a few small time endurance races hosted by small YouTubers and GT6 clubs.

But with Sport... it's been difficult for me. I just cannot place anymore. Having bought the game around 6 months ago, my agressive-yet-respectful driving style feels inadequate for this game; I can't describe exactly how it feels, but it's very much depressing for me. The only way I can win races now is by using my intellect; smart pit stops with just the right ammount of fuel and tyres, driving more calmly to preserve them and knowing when to gun it, and if there's a fast racer I can stick with, I won't pass them but rather pressure them into making a mistake. But I can't seem to battle on my own anymore, not with driving skill.

Perhaps someone who can give me tips to overcome this? I simply don't feel the same anymore... :(

Welcome. I'm not good enough to offer any tips. Just wanted to say you are not alone. What you describe is normal for the majority of players.

One thing to remember is matchmaking in Sports Mode is not formulated to set you up for a win like in single player mode. It takes into consideration the other 10-20 players and is formulated for players to finish in the position they started in. Which makes the transition from single to multi player very painful for everyone.

I've been playing GT since PS1. Bought GTSport on release day. 100% completed the game. 750+ Daily Races. Only 12 wins total, only 1 win so far this year.

I don't race to win or place. I race to improve so I can drive with better competition.

Well, your philosophy is spot on in my opinion. Thing is, I just don't feel like I can improve anymore. I'm at the point where I can barely keep up with the top racers (My DR is A and my SR is B+, my previously mentioned agressive style of driving to pressure leads to constant taps to opponents, making sure they don't spin out obviously!).

I feel it's something to do with the physics of Sport and how they differ to the previous GT games. I used to be a great GT3 driver in 6 in the SLS AMG simply because I could make it oversteer at will and control it to be beneficial to me, and the same applied to many other cars such as the Alpine A110, or the Lancia Stratos road car.

However, meeting someone who is in my position is quite frankly, relieving, if I do say so myself! I wish you good luck in your endeavours~

Yes, when you have a lobby of 20 drivers with just a few thousand DR spread from highest rated to lowest rated, and often multiple people qualifying within the same tenth of a second, the more surprising thing is that any overtaking at all takes place. You only really see the differences in performance that you do because many people aren't at their true DR, e.g. they're in the process of raising it back up after a reset.

I don't know...but maybe you're experiencing a bit of burn out, apparently video games can have an effect on the dopermine levels in the brain, might be worth doing some research, I feel similar to you, I've blamed it on dirty driving, race settings, physics changes etc etc...in truth it's probably my attitude to racing that's changed.

I certainly don't feel burnt out with Gran Turismo, mainly because I alternate it with Grand Theft Auto Online every once in a while and it's fun to return to it. I simply feel like my level and to a lesser extent, my driving style, are outdated; things that would belong in the previous GT games.

One recent addition to the game is the "top 10 ghost" which was added last update. If you're talking about over the last few weeks, then this may be a factor. Especially for higher DR drivers who were close to top 10 times but now can get there much quicker than before. Since it's a new addition people will need an adjustment period. At the start there will be more aggressiveness and harder breaking, etc... until everyone gets up to speed.

That may have to do with it, but maybe it's also my car choice. I do like to be competitive but I don't like to use cars which are plainly better than everything else (e.g; the Beetle / Mégane when they had their reign).

My main cars are:
  • Gr.4: Hyundai Genesis, I alternate it with the Nissan GT-R / the Toyota 86.
  • Gr.3: Hyundai Genesis, I alternate it with the Lexus RC F / the Toyota FT-1.
I am not sure how disadvantegeous they are compared to the top runners; I feel like they're good enough for winning under my current skill level, and I am very comfortable with the Hyundais. They feel quite natural for me.

Calling b.s. on your explanation of your poor SR ranking.

You don’t get SR down for tapping someone from behind - they do. You get SR down for causing racing incidents.

An SR of B and a DR of A tells me clear as day you’re finishing high by being a dirty racer, and I would personally love to see your KudosPrime, I’m sure it would corroborate my theory.

With the association to FIA, I believe GTS is getting in line with how real racing is, trying to be the real driving sim...

The way you feel is probably the same way most F1 drivers feel as well...

When you all compete at the same level, it is not easy to win in #1 position, because well, there can only be one winner and 100 of us wanting the same...

It will be unrealistic to have everyone win...
You just have to accept the real life feeling of losing most of the time, is now getting into games...

Just like in real life, we lose a lot more times than we will ever win...

Although we play games to escape real life, but when you have every single games nowadays imitating real life, it is bound that a game is teaching/sadly reminding us that we should enjoy and can only take small marginal wins rather than the #1 spot...

It is a shift definitely in mindset over all other games...

Good or bad, that's what GT/PD/Kaz is aiming for...

First of all, it wasn't a justification of my "poor" SR ranking; and I understand that minor taps don't inquire SR. I just listed my stats for those who were curious, and a bit of insight into how I drive. I am also not interested in hanging at the back of the pack and driving alone to increase SR, nor will I ever do it; sure it makes me more prone to not increasing it due to racing accidents, but why should I do something like that in order to increase a rating? Although I am working on increasing my SR, same as pretty much everyone.

I'd say you are correct in that, but perhaps it could be applied to any racing game simulator. To me, if I started at the back and managed to have a shot or even place in the podium, that's a win for me, even if it may not be reflected in the statistics.

*Edit to add: Being a dirty racer, and being an agressive one are different driving styles. Tapping someone without making them lose control to create an overtake opportunity surely will raise a few eyebrows, but I consider it a legal move; although I don't abuse it. Now, punting someone off the road is obviously something I won't do.

As I pointed out before, tapping someone from behind grants them an SR down, this has been the case since Aug of 2018. You potentially can make someone drop an entire rank in one race just by doing this.

If you were habitually doing this to me during a race I would crash you out of pure principle. Indeed, dirty and aggressive are different things. But aggressive drivers can maintain an SR of S, and you cannot. So again, I will reiterate that you’re likely just a dirty driver, and since you still refuse to show us your PSN/Kudos, well, “the writing is on the wall”...

I don't habitually do it, but well, this post was just to seek help in becoming quicker. My driving style is just an added piece of information some would consider interesting and I've been like this since I began to race online back in GT5. I have nothing to prove; and I certainly don't look at someone's SR to see if they are a good driver or not. If you were to try and crash me out as you described though, you would have a fair share of retaliation, just saying. There's always someone crazier than you out there.

I don't mean to cause controversy or anything, but you're supposing what kind of driver I am from two posts that I've made in a thread where I am originally seeking help and tips to become quicker; I just don't know what to say anymore to that.

yeah you lost me there. that's a cheap pass. intentionally tapping someone off their line and passing them is dirty in my eyes.

I concur, driving style is an important part of your overall pace. You want to improve your pace, do you not? Well, ditching your dirty, filthy driving style might make you faster.

It depends from person to person. I seem to be sparking anger by my own opinions on driving styles, but I am not wishing to attack anyone in particular.

You say filthy, I say something else; opinions, but I will take your point. Seriously. Maybe you guys are right; and I should change what is considered to be a bad habit. Once more, I don't want to attack or start a fight with anyone; just saying.

Give how easy it is to farm SR, I don’t put any stock in a person’s SR record—a driver can be really dirty, but easily claw back the SR losses with a couple of Race C’s. If anything I’d probably say DR, but more specifically DR resets are a better potential indicator.

That being said, deliberately tapping is dirty. No two ways about it. Not justifiable behaviour at all.

Alright; seeing the opinions stacking up. I understand that I'm not the most gentleman-like driver, and once more; I don't mean to spite anyone with my posts or get into fights.

Points taken, clean driving is more rewarded, and I have gotten into a bad habit. I will be better from now on. Hurts to be wrong, but if you all are saying it then maybe I am really in the wrong over driving style opinions. I will go attempt Daily Race C now, taking the "clean at all times" philosophy and see how I do. My average placement has been from 5th to 7th, so I'll see how I do.

Well sport mode matchmaking made online racing in GT much more competitive, because the game actually puts in a race with people at similar or higher level than you, thats why you feel past your prime i think.

I love that, there is no limit for improvement, there is always someone faster than you.

"Sport is a challenge against yourself, against your rivals, and above all else is something to enjoy and have fun with" Quote from GTSport Racing Etiquette

If you really want to improve you have to learn from the best, race with them, watch top 10 replay see how they race, start taking notes, go trough Tidgney(Top EMEA driver) racing school videos, it helped me a lot and i am sure it will help you.

Oh and also from the racing etiquette

"Motorsport is a called a no contact sport, that means is a sport that absolutely not allow contact with others"

So yeah, tapping someone is not allowed, especially if you do it intecionaly.

It might be worth re-watching the Etiquette videos. GT Sport basically has two rules. Avoid contact at all cost and don't do anything that makes yourself look bad. If you are deliberately tapping people to get past them then you are absolutely breaking one (and arguably both) of those rules. You really need to unlearn that behaviour.

I'd also advise not focusing so much on winning. In 687 Sport mode races I've won 23 of them! Having close clean racing is what makes this game for me.

Good luck with your racing, and plus one for Tidgneys Driving School. It's done wonders for me.

Without video replay of a couple of your races it's pointless to ask for/give any specific tips. From your SR and DR I tend to agree with @ARTAsean a little. It seems you're being reckless instead of aggressive. I have no idea if you punt other people off (even when they don't go off track), if you push to pass or if you just cut corners and accumulate lots of penalties.

One thing is certain, you need to improve your racecraft first, then your pace.

GTP_Lee is not intentionally a dirty driver from my understanding...
Just being competitive and trying to win the way games have allowed us to do so ...

I would admit I think I have the same type of driving style...

But times are evoluating...

So we must readjust...

I wish GTP_Lee well and welcome among the GTP family, glad you finally gave yourself a voice,

Looking forward to some constructive discussion as well as fun driving with you all, including GTP_Lee

;)

then dont be mad when somebody retaliates and hits you off. are you racing or playing it like a game and not trying to race realistically? sounds like the kind of person i dont want to race with. bumping people and passing instead of actually being faster. im not attacking anyone but i guess i shouldnt be surprised to hear people say they consider tapping people out of the way as an acceptable "aggressive" driving style considering how my week in sport mode has been. it just sounds like a dirty driving style to me.

No I won't.

This is happening all the time in F1, it's part of the competition... Drivers nudge each other all the time:
Trying to point out they are faster and to add some pressure....

You will never be able to erase or eradicate it entirely...

Any sport is a contact sport....
