As your obviously looking for an entry level job I would suggest the local McDonald's.
You start serving burgers and move on up to Manager.

The local grocery store could give the same experience.
I worked at the local grocer through high school.

Once you have made Manager you could manage all kinds of different aspects in the working world.

You could manage a race team, yacht club, golf resort, etc.
The possibilities are endless. Get into something you enjoy.

The next step would be to move on up to "Owner" of your own company.

Though I have had my own company before, I prefer to work for someone else.
I didn't like being the head honcho (boss), it took too much personal time away from my life.

I don't think the "dead-end" is something you need to worry about when you're looking for your first job. As much as I would hate to work at McDonald's, it seems pretty reasonable considering everyone I ever knew who worked there eventually became a manager of some sort. Just find something to keep you busy, and that'll pay for gas, food, and jeans. Not a big deal.

Stay in school. Get your education. Work anywhere you can. My first job was a dishwasher at Ponderosa Steak House for $1.90hr. Don't quit one job until you have another lined up. No job at your age is dead end. You have no qualifications at this stage of your life. That's why they call them minimum wage positions.

If you wait around for the right job. It will never come. And you will end up laying around all day playing GT12345........ until your folks kick you out of the house for being a bum.

Well I am an American citizen so that's not an issue. What is an issue is that I'd rather not be a cop. Or armed forces. Or anything else that might end up with me getting shot at.

Planning to stay in school anyway (although grabbing a GED and going into community college sounds almost decent) but that education bit is near as nonexistant at my current school

Cops are completely and utterly over-run by paperwork these days, every cop will tell you the same thing. I almost wanted to be a cop, but my friend's father who is one strongly advised me against it for the paperwork and technicalities involved these days, and I've heard of plenty other cops saying the same.
I wouldn't start at McDonalds, they pay less than grocery stores and the like, or at least they do in Australia, plus the working environment would suck. Try getting a check-out job in store that sells stuff you're kind of interested in, like an automotive spare parts store or something. You'll enjoy your job, they'll smile upon your keen interest in cars during job interviews, and the pay won't completely suck, plus you never know, it might help towards getting better jobs within the automotive industry or something later on.👍

As nuts as this sounds, try a telesales company. I got a place in one of those two and a half years ago, thank God I haven't called a single customer this far, I began as a low lever general paperwork guy. By now I've reached the IT support role and will take over the customer relationship management next year. Got a recognition (with a girl doing the same job, sans IT support) for being the most dependant workers in the entire company. Sure it sounded like an awful job when I began but I've made in the excess of $40k now and money indeed is money so...

The teaching, if it's not completely unbearable catch any chance and see where it takes you.

Try someplace like a quick lube(nearly forgot, you have to be 18) or a pick-and-pull, then. They might be worth something to start with, being something to do with cars.

Go apply and work at a golf course or some kind of resort. I Worked retail and it sucked. My second job was a pool attendant, which is more fun than any job I've had since. It's easy, there are girls in bathing suits left and right, and you get a tan. Working at a golf course is a close second. You load and unload gold clubs, bring around the electric carts, maintain the carts and make some nice take home tips on top of your hourly pay. I was making $11.00 plus tips when I did all that, I really can't think of a more laid back, or easy job for someone in high school. Sure beat sitting inside, or going home smelling like burger grease. I'd seriously look into something like that if I were you, it was so much fun for me. Hopefully you have those kind of things around you, but being as you said it's a "nice" area, I'll guess that there are.

I'm a Service Team Leader at Edinburgh, Very Reasonable Pay, All you need is to stick in at school and be able to put up with a LOT of people who you may not like. I'm actually gaining experience to be an ATCO but that wont come for a while.

I'm in the same boat RJ. Junior in high school, and I've been looking for jobs since March '08. There's nothing out there! I've been called back to only 1 interview, and I've turned in at least 20 applications

Your best bet in finding a job is getting or having connections. It seems the only way you can get a job around where I live is if you know somebody who knows somebody that will give you a job.

Not hardly. My sister, who has around 30 years work experience, ~10 of those being managerial, has been jobless for over a year now.

No it didn't...

It's about to be mothballed, which yes means it probably will cease activity but there is a last ditch effort from our um, er, "wonderful" Prime Minister (can tell election time is near) to attempt to save it.

So no, it's not gone under yet and those jobs haven't been lost yet although admittedly it's not looking good. Perhaps you should spend your JSA on something more productive than alcohol (paper, envelopes, stamps and printer ink is a good start)

Sorry to hijack. My suggestion would be to take on something vocational i.e. an apprenticeship. If you know what you want to be when you grow up, then that's a big plus. If you're not sure and you take on an apprenticeship, then at least you can eliminate one of the things you don't want to do

Any job interveiw you get, try to standout, make them remember you.... in a good way
Start conversation, don't always wait for them to ask you a question.
Look around the room, use anything to to say something, show them your personality. The difference between you and another jobseeker, could only be the fact that they remember your one-liner, or the fact that you took an interest in something of theirs eg; a photo, a painting, not so much better grades.
These are some of the things that may, make the difference.
