I was wondering if anyone saw this already, so I thought I'd open this thread:

New drug blocks HIV from entering cells

07/07/2005
The Asahi Shimbun

A durable new drug that prevents HIV from entering human cells and causes almost no side effects has been developed by a team of researchers at Kumamoto University.

The new drug, code named AK602, was reported by the research team's leader, Hiroaki Mitsuya, at the International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific in Kobe on Tuesday.

The drug's main feature is that it shuts out the AIDS virus at the point when it tries to intrude into a human cell.

Current AIDS medicines can lose their effectiveness in a few days when the virus changes and develops a resistance to those drugs. But AK602 is different because it reacts to human cells instead of attacking the virus, Mitsuya said.

He said the drug sticks to a protein called CCR5 that acts as an entrance into human cells for the AIDS virus. When the new drug becomes attached to the protein, it can prevent HIV from entering, and thus stop the virus from spreading.

The researchers conducted clinical tests on 40 AIDS patients in the United States.

AK602 not only proved effective against viruses that had become resistant to other drugs, but it also caused almost no side effects, the team said.(IHT/Asahi: July 7,2005)

AWESOME!

but, does this mean the person will still carry HIV, but just not have it develop into AIDS?

Wow, this is a great leap forward. 👍 Best thing to come out of Japan, since Wasabi. :sly:

that's more like it. :sly:x2

Kancho sucks. :grumpy: I did that to my classmate, when I was like in the third grade. It was the first and the last time, I did it. He damn near cried, made me feel really bad.... :guilty:

Wow, because it's from Japan, this went from AIDS miracle drug, to kancho discussion in... only 5 posts! I bet the Japanese are really proud of having such a reputation.

well....least you won't get AIDS from going up the butt anymore.

I'm not excited because AIDS is not a big problem and I'm not sure this will work. When they cure cancer I'll get excited.

are you kidding? AIDS IS a big problem. plus, this could lead to cures for cancer. any progress is good progress.

AIDS is a huge problem. Millions get sick or die from it, mostly in poorer countries. Last I read, it's starting to spread in Asia. Just starting to, nothing major, except it has been real bad in India, reportedly. And I do agree with Omnis. Even if it was tested on only 40 patients, it's still an remarkable advancement.

didn't some guy find a cure for it long time ago, then he was then killed?
Somebody told me that before. Why wasn't such a big news reported though? Smells fishy......

This sounds more like a thriller

first of all, AIDS is not the virus. AIDS is what you get from the HIV virus.

Wasn't HIV first formed in monkeys or something? I have no idea about the story of how it began, but I from what I've heard about how it spread, a gay flight attendant from South Africa spread it overseas after contracting it from some african dude or whatever.

Feel free to clarify. Now they need to cure all the other STDs. I can't wait.

More girls without STDs = more girls to have sex with. allllright. :sly:

What I think:
monkeys carry the HIV virus but are immune to it. Scientist discovered this virus, took it with to a lab where they genetically engeneerd it, releasing it, to reduce the world population. After that the virus started to evolve into something the scientist couldn't control anymore and now we have an epidemic on our hands.

This story should also be a nice thriller

I haven't seen it in a while, but "Outbreak" with Dustin Hoffman, Morgan Freeman, that Lethal Weapon chick and Cuban Gooding Jr., like that?

AIDS is a virgin's revenge on the whores.

AIDS research is pretty much a waste of money because I have a cure for it right now... stop having sex.

AIDS is not a big problem - it has an easy solution allowing any intelligent person to prevent themselves from getting it. Cancer on the otherhand strikes anyone at any time - there is no solution at all to that problem. That's one place we need medicine pretty badly.

AIDS is a big problem, but it can be cured in a relatively short space of time. As Danoff said, if people didn't just go around sleeping with any dog they probably won't catch it. The only way someone who doesn't have sex with a HIV positive person can catch it is through blood, so using the same needels as other people or if you were helping a man who was bleeding badly and he had HIV you could catch it if you had a scratch or if any entered you're body in any other way.

Sounds a little inconsistent.

To me, it isn't a big problem if it's easily preventable... and AIDS is easily preventable.

Tell that to the children born with HIV/AIDS, or the ones who lost their parents because of it.

Very good point. 👍 Also, time after time, I'm so surprised by how people are ignorant about the problems in Africa. Unlike in the North America or Europe, people in Africa still needs to be educated about how to avoid AIDS/HIV and what they can do. Secondly, occurence of rape is much higher in Africa(from what I've read, especially in Southern parts of Africa). WE ARE TALKING MILLIONS, EVERY YEAR. Not a big problem to us..... for now.

I do think and agree that cancer research is more important than AIDS/HIV research. But to say it's not important is just ignorant.

Yes, it would be easy to stop the AIDS virus by not having sex. The only problem is, over half the people who have the virus don't even know they have it.
