A Sims-drifting Adventure

My personal opinion about Sims is that they are too frustrating to drift with and takes the fun out of drifting for me... Sooo.. I came up with an idea to put the fun back into drifting with Sims...

This is directed to all the noobies wanting to drift with Sims... Myself, I'm familiar with especially 4WD drifts, but when it comes to FR on Sims.. I'm like as green as grass (not weed!!! )

The idea is simple... we share the same common goal... so why not make a group effort out of it...

Here is the plan..... we will be requiring the following..

1. Specific course (to be decided upon by whoever's interested..
eg. Trial Mountain)
2. Specific car (with sims, generalised settings - slight modifications allowed, hp and other settings to be decided)
3. Hardware + necessary stuff to post vid

So, we decide on a track, car and drift away!!:) A time-frame will be or might be introduced...

Remember, this is not a competition or a challange!!

This is just to have a little fun drifting with Sims...

After you had fun drifting, post your vid, and comments will be made (I'm sure! )... we will help eachother helping ourselves..

This will continue until we are comfortable drifting with Sims... or until the fun runs out!;)

So, if you think this is a good idea... Let's get a move on!!! If you have a better suggestion, please feel free to share it with us...

This is not a challange... Fun is the name of the game...

Edit:

Fun drifters thus far:
Shadow Drifter, pRaHjEc, Catch-my-drift?, Chaos Fire, Thio, Bryan.C, Sheron, minihux, zoxxy, precisionlocke'

Technical Advisors:
battle_stage + Silviadrifter

Stage1

Car
180 sx (200sx Japanese. version)

Track
Trial Mountain

Settings

Here are the settings as decided by the Silviadrifter + battle_stage...

Note - use only the settings mentioned.. we are going to start slow and work our way up... happy drifting!

I'm in there like swimwear, I'll try it. Name the track, I'll use my 240sx Fastback or my RS200 which ever, it'll be a blast.

Excellent Shadow Drifter!:) Let us just wait for some more interested people and then we can decide on which car and track to use... Will give it until tomorrow night...

i do have an xport though, can anybody help me out?

I'm not familiar with Xport.. but I'm sure there are threads about it... do a search and maybe you might find something that can help you..

You say you dont have movie making capability.. what do you mean by that? You refering to the software or the actual editing of the movie...

Remember that we don't want a masterpiece.. all we are interested in is the visual.. if you have no background music - that's cool... its anyway just a bonus to have it:)

Well, I am interested. Although, I am having problems getting my capture card to capture. I have an ATI All-In-Wonder 9000Pro, and I cannot get the capture function to work in Premier. I am having licensing issues with Studio 8, so I'm just going to have to wait for a reply from Pinnacle before I casn use that program.

I applaud your willingness to work on your lack of skill with sims. Sims are the only way to go, for the true drifting enthusiast. Also, people who say that sims are to slippery, that's because you have too much power, or the settings are all wrong. If the car is set up right, it isn't any more slippery than slicks or normals.;)

One thing I forgot to mention... I will be using analog to drift (no wheel :( )

An important thing to mention when posting vids will be to specify which one you use.. this way, for eg, the wheel drifters can help those who struggle with their drifts, if you using the wheel...

Good to have you onboard Silvidrifter... :)

I want to make it a fun experience, coz drifting by myself (so to speak) is frustrating... like I explained to you before... but I think this way we can all participate at a "fun" level and hopefully benefit from it on the long run..

The capture issue.. have you tried capturing using different software, eg Windows movie maker?? I'm using Movie maker 2, coz 1 is just too crappy and is not user-friendly... or do you have problems with the actual capturing capibilty of your hardware?

Another thing.. I will constantly edit the first post as to how many members are interested in our little adventure and what the voting results regarding the type of car, track and settings will be... will decide at a later stage on how we are going to vote etc... I think PM will be the best way to go... or we can keep it in this thread for everyone to see... we can decide on that...

I'm willing to be the technical advisor for this. I can help decide setups, cars, power, tracks, etc...

This way you guys won't go throwing 400+hp into a simulation tire equipped car and get frustrated when you fly into walls.

Good idea, I will also help with this. I think with our help, we can dispell the idea that sims are too slick. Anyway, I'll give Movie Maker 2 a try. Does anyone use Adobe Premier? I need someone to help me figure out how to setup the capture function. ;)

I'm thinkin of pickin up an X-port and sendin my replay files to someone to make into a movie. So I might enter if I buy one. Deep Forest Raceway II is like my home course with my R32.

:) Cool chaos... I'm sure we all have our fav car and track.. but the whole idea is to be able to drift with any car and on any track... to do this we have to start at a point...

I'm sure one of us will be able to help you post your vids... unfortunately I dont have an xport... but try to get your hands on a capturing card.. I know, easier said than done.. but think of it as an investment.. remember.. GT4 is on it's way.. and I'm sure you are going to regret not having a capture card then!!

Well I've decided I'll jsut take some pictures of the drift entry, middle, and exit. I mean, GT4's gonna be an online game so who cares about a Capture Card?

YES!! you are right!! My badd!!

About the pics... hmmm i dunno.. it will be difficult or nearly impossible to advice on pics alone...

Ok then.. I will add you to the list... :) will see how it goes...

Most dig cameras have that ability... by any means necessary bro!!

Try your best to get those vids posted... goodluck :)

I will be more than happy to help with this. Anything to finally prove the superiority of sims. As soon as I get my card to work, I will be showing some of my drifts as well. Untill then, I will give assistance on settings, and technique (with the help of Battle Stage, of course).;)

This isn't meant to prove superiority over anything.. let's not lose our focus here..

Our final aim is to be able to drift with any car using slicks or sims..

Sims being the core of this adventure seeing that it invloves the most skill... that's why we need all the help we can get :)

Well, whether it's meant to prove it or not, sims are superior for precise control of a drift, period. I am confident, that this excersize will prove this. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy drifting on all types of wheel and HP combinations, but sims are the best way to learn, and they make the most impressive replays IMHO. ;)

Edit: I tried out Movie Maker, and I am proud to say, that I can now make vids. The only problem is that the capture seems to be too dark. Do you know how to change the screen resolution, or any other way to brighten it up?;)

We will see what the outcome will be.. when everyone, hopefully being able to confidently drift with sims, will themselves decide which they prefer...

I don't want this thread to be flamed with an Old disagreement and would appreciate it if we can just refrain from this.. :) No offence.. ;)

Ok.. lets get back to your problem at hand... when you click on "capture from video device".. the window that appears will display in it a configure button (right under video input source - defaulted to composite). Go in there and click on "camera settings"...

We will see indeed. I don't mean to try and sway it one way or the other, but I am still confident that sims are important to learn with. Anyway, thanks for the tip, I brightened it up, and now even Deep Forest looks great. Thanks again, and when are we goin' to get this started? ;)

Well alrighty then!!! So can we expect some what 10 vids from you soon???

I'm giving it until tonight (SA-time).. that's in about 12 hours... hehehee... and all of those who have decided to participate will be notified... and please guys.. try to respond a.s.a.p... so that by Monday (the latest) we can start this journey...

So, basically the idea is to decide on a track and car over the weekend (by voting ofcoz - nothing formal) and take it from there..

Silvia + battle_stage... think of cars (with settings) so long to steer us in the right direction - please choose a car that is freely available (not a limited edition) so that it would be fair to everyone....

Thanx..

what i meant was that i have no way to capture videos =[

the cars i've been using recently are nissans, S13's, RPS13's, and R32 Skyline GTS-T's with around 370-380 horsepower on sims, they work pretty well. before i had that much power i was using about 250-270 horsepower on sims, that works alright too. my suspension setup is pretty different from other people though, so that might have something to do with the easy-ness of losing traction.
