AI needs one fix - no more "pitman"

This is just blatantly wrong. The AI is aware of every car on track and acts accordingly.

You never player GT5 - right ? Ore you do not even nearly know what "acting accordingly" means. If real racers would act like the "artificial stupidness" of GT5 there would be a lot of dead drivers every race - ore they would be at least be disqualified!

I think F1 2010 is the leading example of "good" racer AI... (now that it's patched)... they basically follow real racing rules... your front end is up to the middle of the car, they yield, you have the advantage... if not and only wheel to wheel they will close the door on you forcing you to yield...

It can be quite convincing more times than not...
quote, f1 2010 has a great AI, just like grid before it, especially I love how the other drivers "see" the player and react as clean as possible, I've never been pit maneuvered in the 3 full championships I played, never rammed or stuff like this, even if I made a mistake they very efficiently avoided me and even stopped in order to not crash... ok I had some crashes but only because there wasn't enough space to stop, but they braked at least:dopey:

That's IMO the real prob with gt5 ai, the other cars tend to drive alone, not caring about the player

yes but as far as I've seen they are aware in particular of the others AI driven cars, they work great together, they drive really smooth and the b-spec shows that, but when the player is in they tend to ignore it and only try to stop him aggressively......

<-- Level 27, and the last one that played GT5P :sly:

The AI is brilliant, unlike many real life GT drivers. I have been in enough 'open lobbies' to find this out.

have you tried doing the one lap battles for the licenses? Do those and then you'll see how bad the AI is

How is the AI bad? In real life if you push your car to limts trying to bump here and there, everyone would push you off the road. AI is good, sure not perfect, but its damn good, its using a race line, and so should people.

This is one thing that always makes me have to restart a race, and makes me furious. Continuously pitted. Its so annoying. Unlike older games, they won't move a bit, they will push you till they spin you.

Or maybe the human drivers should stop driving like madmen and expecting the AI to do what you think it should, when you are obviously the one creating the problem to begin with. I've raced this game many times over and over, I have yet to see the AI trying to actively take me out with bad driving, they always try to avoid me, and pass when they see an opening. You should study the replays of your race to see who is at fault, bet you would notice that it's more than likely a product of your making.

Few days ago some one was making a stink about the AI driving badly in the license tests specifically the IA, I went and did that very test last night and got second place. I bumped into cars a few times as the gallardo is a bit of a handful on those tires, but I was never DQ'ed for bumping a car, it was incidental and I wasn't out of control or actively ramming anyone. The AI was very good, in fact, when I took the inside on a corner the AI immediately backed off. Thereby I stand by my claim that many people complaining are the one's causing the problems, the AI is good for what it has to do. Honestly in a real two lap race with the AI driving aggressively, you'd barely make it to 10th place.

Check your so called good driving before you go blaming the AI for faults. I'm not saying the AI isn't faulty, but in cornering and driving ability, they are definitely excellent. Certain things they fail at is when they clip you, it's like you do not exist anymore as if the AI doesn't know you are there. But on regular door to door even quarter panel collisions the AI will correct itself as I have seen numerous times. But the issue is that I made the mistake, the AI rarely if ever does.

Thanks for the logic 👍

Within the first race I did in GT5, I commented to my friend how awesome the AI was, and he agreed. This was after racing GT5P strictly online for 2 years.

When the so called "AI" keeps bumping into the back of my car when I am in front it is definitely not my fault.

Ore when the next car right behind me crashes into me so I spin a few time - not only that this cars keeps track and keeps on driving like nothing happened - also all the other following cars keep crashing into my car... That has absolutely NOTHING to to with realism!

If you find the GT5 AI realistic you may never ever in your live have seen any REAL race event in TV ...

What are you talking about? Did I ever say that the AI was completely realistic? Putting words into my mouth, again the AI doesn't ram you unless you are going overly to slow in a corner, never on a high speed straight. In fact if you pass them on a straight they immediately try to get to the side after you passed them so they can setup for the next corner. Ai bumping into you means you don't know how to take a corner correctly. AI clipping you in a corner means you performed some ridiculous maneuver to get yourself into that position.

The only problems the AI really has is when it either clips your car(usually when you perform bad overtakes and cut across their line) or when you spin, it's like your car vanishes from the course because the AI drives as though you aren't there. But for everything else, it's most likely your driving style which more than likely needs work. I am right now playing around in S license test and bumping into cars at different speeds, and seems to me that the AI is very aware of my presence and takes appropriate measures to avoid contacting me. I ran into the back of another car that was slower the AI was frantically trying to keep from spinning out as I pushed him down the road.

AI ramming is not a problem when you can drive through corners and stay on a line, and not jumping in front of the AI for a pass that basically you didn't have the line for and would possibly get you black flagged in a real race anyway. I am driving like an idiot right now and this is where I see problems, but when I am driving cleanly and trying to beat the AI, I get no problems aside from cars in races trying to brake check me in a corner when I'm faster, but they don't block in a corner though.

If you are experiencing any trouble with the AI apart from when you spin out on your own and get rammed, then just like the spin it's most likely your inadequacies that caused the problem. Just check the replay if you don't believe me.

There is a big difference between racing street cars and Nascar especially on those short tracks compared to F1 racing.
It's very common to see tire rings on the side of the cars where they made contact in the corners.

Sorry but you have no idea what you are talking about. Go play the NASCAR races, you will get rammed MILLIONS of times on the straights.

The collision physics are wrong too. The AI seem to be made from lead. This results invariably in you coming off worse.

Out of interest what are the online collision physics like? Are they more proportionate to each vehicle?

Perhaps another way to look at this... the AI doesn't "jockey for position", they just force their way in and even when they make contact they keep pushing...

It's not like there is any suspension of belief that your racing against anything other than a robot...

Getting mad is the natural reaction to being spun out but most of the time it happens because you cut across the AI not because they steered into you. If you were getting cut off by the AI with nowhere to go you'd do the same thing only its not as easy to spin the AI out because they counter steer instantly.

Go back to the first page, NASCAR and SPECIAL EVENTS ARE SCRIPTED TO BE DIFFICULT. Are you getting rammed in in a pack or is the AI coming out of nowhere with you driving by your lonesome and just ramming you? Seems to me that you seem not to know how NASCAR is raced, it's called a bump draft happens because your slipstream helps the cars behind you catch up to you, but the resulting bump can propel you forward thus keeping you ahead. Not sure if it's done right in GT5, but if the whole line of cars behind you moves and follow the second car and they all form up behind him, they will all pass you, like a full bus.

true, not mentioning that most of gt5 tracks are narrower than f1 tracks, but contacts are fine, not the fact that if I do a corner too slow I get rammed by the one behind me, they don't brake at all, they simply go on... don't tell me that racing a street car you would smash into other drivers if they are slower than you in a corner, you would brake, then try to pass him the next corner.... avoiding to crash should be very important, they care about that only between eachother, but not with you, take a look to the replays, they are very clean racing together but less when is the player behind or ahead them....

This. And yes, I have no idea how NASCAR is raced because I hate it, that's why those races (NOT events) are even made worse. They might "bump draft" me, but they keep plowing into me right up to the turn, and obviously you get pitted from that because the cars stick like glue to you.

I have no issues with the regular races, those are perfectly fine; its just the NASCAR/scripted events that are borderline moronic.

This was done to make them as difficult as possible without making the AI a total super unstoppable cheat. There are ways around them, but notice that the normal races the AI doesn't drive like that, NASCAR vehicles are basically all the same and PD should have given each AI slight characteristics so that they drive each of the NASCAR vehicles differently. All the cars are equal so they will all drive exactly the same, it's not hard to pit the AI, they just counter steer quickly, something I learned really quick doing that Samba bus thing on TGTT.

The AI in GT is the worst that i have played with and the only racing sim that has caused such mixed reactions ie braking zones are terrible. And it destroys the Bspec aspect of the game, It's frustrating watching your bspec driver coming first and gets taken into the wall on the last corner and they just sit there banging the wall then at the same time they reverse out and take off at the same time. Im thinking what about the more time consuming events that end up like this wihtout having to use over powered cars at the cost of XP gained. Forza, rfactor, GTRseries and Race on, all are quite intellingent. This is GT5's biggest problem and totally ruins the enthusiasm for such a great game. Im hoping they hurry in online CR and XP then it wont even bother me anymore. AI is dissapointing and i hope a patch comes real soon but unlikely. Rant over

Yeah I'm sorry, I'm in the "AI is the worst ever" camp. This is total BS. You can rationalize all you want, but here are the facts: If you're in a real race in a real car at a DEAD STOP on a straight and someone hits you, it's their fault, not yours. If you late-brake into a corner (which is a very effective passing technique that is used ALL THE TIME), the concept is that you are slowing down MORE than the car you are overtaking because you have to make a sharper turn to intercept the racing line, the same racing line that they want to take to continue through the corner. It works because in real racing there are rules, and the rule is that you can't divebomb someone to block their pass at the corner, and because once they overtake you at all, you can't rear-end them just because you're able to take the turn at a higher speed. If you could do those things, then late-braking wouldn't be such a vital tool.

The GT AI is worthless. They will stick to that exact line and plow through anything in their way. If you are in a less-powerful car but out driving them, and using late-braking as a perfectly viable technique to make passes, you're F'ed, because they will maintain speed and hit your back end as you're making the turn. Race over. Pretty awesome when you're in the middle of, I dunno, say, The Dream Car Championship and you have to do the whole thing over.

This!

Actually yesterday I decided to see what I really could do to the AI as far as barging them. I was on La Sarthe in the Dream Car Challenge and ended up going head to head with a Ford GT LM Spec II so I thought "Hmm I wonder if I can push him onto the grass or possibly spin him.

This was on the fast section between Mulsane and Indianapolis. So here we are doing 250+ km and I am literally giving it full right steering as hard as I can. Nothing....couldn't even push him offline let alone off track...

So I back off the throttle so I can try to pit him on his rear quarter. Wanna guess who spun?...I could barely get his rear wheels to break traction...

I could live with the AI IF the same laws of physics applied to them. It would at least be "fair"

I don't understand why anyone would even bother to try to defend the AI and their behaviour. Yeah sure sometimes they can pull off some clever moves but bottom line is their cars are not using the physics we are to any degree so they will always be flawed because of it.

Well having been doing endurance races a ton in the last few days, and some of them such blow outs i had time to test a bit my own.

One AI is somewhat aware of players if your lapping them, if your are behind they will move over, problem is they seem to be only able to move one way on any given track. Indy they always go left, on the roadster course they always go right, but beyond that small glimmer of recognition, the actual where you are when passing, and how fast you are going seems wholly lost on them.

Hence late braking is always a very bad idea less you can carry a ton of speed into a corner, else they will just wipe you out. That said the AI has a supreme gift to seem to break early when you are behind them but when you are late breaking well they seem to just barrel into the turn.

Far as avoidance goes, AI seem to learn if you say park your car on the driving line. first car will slam into you but the following cars will do their best to avoid the thing parked on the driving line.

AI also seems to have god grip off the road, and huge downforce even in low downforce cars, laguna seca race was apparent just how godly their off road traction in the sand is since they could go off and just drive right back on the track, but my car went off i just kept going and could not even turn the car until i hit a barrier or came to a dead stop.

Bottom line the AI is a hair better than past GTs, but the problem is i rather have them stuck on their driving line, cause them weaving all over in front of you at 200 mph makes things very dicey going for a pass. Nevermind if you are trying to take a whole pack of cars.

The saddest part is even if you go past a corner were they normally brake they keep accelerating. I've been pinned against a wall for around 5 seconds from this glitch.

That's so true. Late breaking is one of the most uses ways for overtaking in real races and in GT5 you can't do it because you will get fishtailed by the "AS" (artificial stupidness).

Another problem of the "AS" is that they have other physical standards than the players car. - I tried it out with the X1 - if you crash in to an "AS" car on a strait line with full speed (~400km/h) your car spins multiple times an sometimes even lifts up in the air - and what happens to the "AS" car? - Nothing it just keeps on driving! :grumpy:
