Aids, detremental to racing??

i don't consider myself to be a 'high quality' driver but I use the DS3 (dual shock 3) and i have both TCS and ASM off. ABS is set at 1. i'm not a fan of driver aids.

In terms of traction, understeer is a lack or loss of traction at the front of your car. You crank the wheel over and you feel like the car is ploughing through the rubber.

Oversteer feels 'twitchy,' especially right before you lose the car. The car feels like the rear end want's to trade places with the front.

I never use the aids except the ABS, the other aids ruin the purity of the car, and if I'm on the last lap heading into the last corner and I was in the lead, I would drift around the last corner as a celebration win. Did it a lot at Suzuka East.

I use a logitech MOMO wheel, and have all the aids (except ABS) off, and on professional. Its a much more "rewarding" feeling when you turn them all off.

Well, after reading these posts it seems that I am the only one who drives with all aids off including ABS (no matter what the situation).:scared: To make matters worse is the fact that I am using the DS3, with the brake controller set to default. I must be a glutten for punishment.:crazy:

:yuck:

You use the buttons for brake and gas? I've changed those to the triggers for my DS3. But hey, whatever works for you. :cheers: to rockin it old school.

with the active steering on etc, i don't seem to have a problem, with it off thats when i have major problems, not just the occasionl twitch but a big loss of control

When i started GT5P, i had the same problems. I started with the active steering turned on and got used to it, and after turning it off i had serious problems to get the car around the track. With active steering on it seems that you can turn the wheel as crazy if you want to get around a corner, without it you have to be carefully and choose the right angel when you turn in.

I remember that i had a hard time when i switched it off and had a lot of visits in the gras first....not only when cornering, but also in races when i tried to overtake someone on the straights, because i was used to turn the wheel very hard. It was hard to not switch it on again, because with AS on i could drive with most of the fastest guys out there, without it i couldn't drive a single lap....

So if you want to drive without it, do what spyrarri told you....do a lot of timetrials to get used to it. Thats what i did first, too , and i remember that i have been like 10 seconds slower on my first laps compared to my records before, getting faster every lap until i finally was able to drive the same times as before.
Maybe you should start with some lower PP cars to get a feeling for the steering.

I will never ever switch it on again ;-)

ABS=1
other=off
FF=10
(power steering on)
(active steering off)

I am on the Sixaxis running only ABS at 1 and everything else off. It takes skilled delicate finger movements to fully control the car with a controller. I still lose it sometimes.

Hi Timppaq,

what is "powersteering"?

Btw, i drive with all AIDs off (no ASM, no active steering..), except ABS=1

I tend to hold the wheel in a death grip, but simply cannot focus on my grip strength while racing or running TT's. I'd love to hold it more gingerly because I have tendinitis in my left elbow.

Try holding the wheel between your thumb and forefinger, that should help you to learn that you don't need to grip the wheel as tight.

I think it was found on the "main" options... I think it just simulates the real power steering that most car have. F40 doesn't have this.. :D

Sixaxis user here too and all aids are turned off except ABS. Couldn't even imagine going into Casio Triangle without ABS.

Hairpins are the hardest places for me to cope with. It's less then a millimiter too much thumb movement and the tyres start to spin at the exit. However with lower powered cars it's pretty easy because you can pump the gas without losing control.

I am definetly getting a wheel when I have the funds but I don't consider I suck with the sixaxis either, 1'57 around suzuka in the 111R. ^^

Hi Timppaq,

what is "powersteering"?

I also have power steering enabled (under the wheel options). With power steering turned off, FF wheels will add resistance to quick turns of the wheel. With power steering enabled, this extra resistance is disabled.

The trick here is counter-steering the right amount at the right time... When I first got my wheel I was all over the place, because I wasnt use to the counter steering aspect.. I believe on a pad your wheels pretty much always go back straight, if I remember correctly. With a wheel it doesnt do that unless you have active steering on.... I used Active steering as a teaching aid... I put it on strong and payed attention to the amount of counter steer it gave when I started slipping. After a while I got use to it and gradually turned it off. Now I can drive with it off and if a car bumps I can correct it... MOST of the time :) not all the time... it might sound old... but PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE :)👍

Most cars, all aids off, ABS on 1.
Viper, TCS 3, all others off, ABS always on 1.
I drive pro physics, DFGT wheel, powersteering on, FF set to 5.

I drive mainly the Eiger Norwand, its more my style track, less speed, more technical. Viper is a pig here, it takes little more than 25% throttle through a corner to unravel the car.

ABS=1
other=off
FF=5 and L1+L4+R3 at DFP wheel option, that means FF around = 2,5
(power steering off)
(active steering off)

very smooove. :D

very fast too! 👍

Thanks, after writing about it yesterday I ran a bunch of laps in F1:CE, paying particular attention to how I was holding the wheel. For whatever reason I was placing my left hand differently on the wheel than my right. I evened them out and things improved drastically.

Yes they are detremental to your racing, and your sex life. (I had to reply again to say it)

the only aid thats not IMHO is abs and only bcause theres is not a lot of feed back on what the brakes are doing untill they lock.
even TC i had given up with the blitz and used tc for a while, then i stopped again and now that ive figured out how to controll the throttle better i can put the power down just as good if not a hair better in some cases.

How can you guys use so few aids!? Without ASM I spin like every corner. :(

Throttle control is key in my opinion. 👍 Why not watch the top times for, let's say, the NSX or maybe the Vette Z06 around Suzuka. It should help you out.

G25

ABS 1
Others 0

FF 10
Active Steering off
Power Steering off

I find no power steering and FF at 10 helps me be smoother with the steering inputs - stops me making big steering moves that unsetle the car.

Beware, I'm out on track with NO aids turned on, decided to learn to drive and stop pretending i could, been practicing like spyrrari said, started in time trials using the Evo's to get the feel, soon as i got close to or in the top ten at the time i moved on to another car, went on to BMW 135i and practiced with the RW, again soon as i hit the top ten with no aids at the time i moved on. Am using the Tuned Vette at the moment, now pushing it into the very very high 58's still 2 secs off the fastest time posted in here by other members https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=110166 but some people have talent and others like me....don't, but we make up the numbers in online racing and try to have fun....To anyone still using aids, i would recommend turning them off and doing like spyrrari says, practice in time trials and don't go back to turning them on, it will click eventually...kind of....see you online.....

It could also be your settings, if your not sure how to tune, then head over to the tune garages and they 'll help you out with that.;)
Also as a general tuning tip, the higher the Power of the engine, the more focus you need to put on the rear of the car.👍
Peace,

someone please tell me if power-assisted steering (not active steering) slows down your car like the others( ASM TC etc.)? I cant tell.

Yes thats absolutley right, its a real challenge to drive a high powered car using the controller. I'm a Sixaxis user and I have gotten use to it though and I manage to get the power down alrigth now. This is a post for anyone( Won't mention any names) wishing to question the difficulty of using controllers. Saying that controllers are for Noobs is just plain arrogance.👍
Cheers,

I'm a SIXAXIS user and i use no aids except abs on 1. I'm not a too good but I can be competitive some times with some cars..

Power Steering does not slow down the car at all.
