Don't know if it's been done before, but I'm bored and who cares anyway :p

List your all time favourite bands in here.

Bands you will always listen to no matter how old the songs or albums are .

Here's mine ...


Manic street preachers ( absolutley brilliant! great band! I seen them live too! so cool ! I think these are my fave's :D)
Coldplay ( well.. fantastic !! great music, love 'em but I just missed out on some tickets for them too :( )
Pink Floyd ( absolute genious, 1st class! )
Queen ( ah! the best british Rock band there ever was! great music and Freddie's voice is unmatchable by anyone :cool: )

That's it ! can't think of any more quality bands I would put in this catagory for myself, although I do have a very wide taste in music these are my all time favourites. What's yours and why?
 
Mine are:

- Coldplay
- The Police ( no matter how old they are, i still like to listen to some of their songs from time to time ).
- Acda en de Munnik ( best Dutch band ever )

I'd have a similar list, though I don't know if I'm going to like TOOL and Nine Inch Nails in 15 years. Don't know why I didn't include TMBG.

If you removed Morphine, you'd have my current favorite bands.
 
I'm definitely going to like Tool and NIN in 15 years. It's been 16 years that I've liked TMBG, 10 years that I've liked NIN, and 7 years that I've liked Tool.

Have you listened to Morphine? They're so cool - like watching a hardboiled detective movie with your ears.

I also like Zeppelin (ummm, 30 years now) and the Pumpkins (what, 7 years also?). I used to like a lot of older Floyd but it has just paled for me now. Same with the Beatles.

You're a good man, Gil, my taste is closer to yours than anyone else's on GTP - I'm actually surprised anybody else on the 'Planet has ever heard of Edwin McCain (or Marc Cohn!). I wouldn't call any of your artists my all time favourites, but I certainly listen to them when they come on the car radio.

I guess that is your cue to leave, Gil. Having similar tastes as M5Mower [bam!] can be detrimental to your health. I feel ashamed to like U2, and kinda like Bruce Springsteen. Yeah, it's true.

'Silver Thunderbird' isn't a favourite of mine (but I can see why you like it!), but I bought the self-titled album mainly for 'Walking in Memphis,' which is an all-time favourite song of mine. I ended up finding other stuff on the album - '29 Ways' and 'Ghost Train' are great. All his albums are great stuff.

The McCain songs you name are favourites of mine (all from 'Honour Among Thieves,' I see), though my actual favourite McCain album was the newest one - 'Far From Over.' Gil, I think you would enjoy the Ryan Adams album 'Gold.'

Dude, M5Mower is so not an insult. But you should feel ashamed to like what I like - after all, you're like 12 years old. I hope your friends make fun of you for liking U2.

I haven't seen the newest album yet. My actual favorite of his is "the Sign on the Door" from the "green" album.
If I ever get in to the record store, I'll give Ryan Adams a listen.

Klos, Morphine is great. A unique sound. Check out anything from Cure For Pain (especially 'Buena') or Like Swimming (especially the title track). They were from the Boston area (though they broke up when the singer/writer died a couple years ago).

At risk of making diffusing my list a bit too much, I'll add a few more:

Certainly not - I'm referring to Ryan Adams, who I believe you would actually hate more than Bryan! Bryan Adams was musically nothing but he was good at the song writing thing.

I didn't add SRV simply because I am a Guitar player, at least I play AT it. And I figure that SRV goes without saying.
I also like:
Huey Lewis and the News, Mediocre I know, but "feel good" music.
Bruce Hornsby and the Range (NOBODY plays piano like Hornsby).
My tastes are very eclectic. I go from rock to country to blues to jazz to gospel.
 
I'm a fan of Hornsby, too, and Huey Lewis and the News (who my dad affectionately has dubbed 'the Newts'), but to a lesser degree than artists on page one.

Yes, I'm fairly wide-ranging in my tastes too. Gil, I love Walking in Memphis, as long as it's not the murdered version by that braying pig Cher.

As for personal faves, I reckon Depeche Mode have been with me forever. The first record I ever bought was a DM record (New Life). I like a lot of that British early electronica, especially New Order. Otherwise, there's been a lot of fine bands mentioned here, particularly Coldplay. I'm alo a fan of Simple Minds, and M5Power's suggestion of Bruce Hornsby. I particularly like his contribution to the otherwise rubbish Backdraft soundtrack. For me, Bruce will always be linked with Don Henley, who's songs Boys of Summer and The End of the Innocence are classics. On the ... Innocence album, he has a great lyric: "She stared at me, uncomprehendingly/Like cows at a passing train."

And Neon_Duke Rachmaninov was a fantastic composer. I think his second Piano Concerto is perhaps the finest piece of music ever written. It's the only music I can sit in the dark and listen to all the way through without getting bored.
 
Yeah! Another Modern Lovers fan. Roadrunner has to be one of my favorite songs. Mazzy Star is pretty good too, but I can't count them as all-time-favorites in my book.

On the Mazzy Star line, I like Portishead. too, but I think I'm going a little away from the intent of this thread.

So Tonight That I may See is what was on the first time I ever smoked pot, so I guess it's sorta historic for me. And a few years ago I may have included Portishead in my list. I haven't listened in a while.
