does anyone know how many GHz the AMD Athlon™ 64 FX -53 comes with, I bought the Abit AV8 - VIA K8T800 Pro and was told the FX -53 is the best CPU for it. Thanks.

Ok its 2.4GHZ with a 1600MHZ in other words 1.6GHZ FSB, and also a FX-53 is the best AMD 64 CPU for desktop for the gaming side of things.

with the release of windows longhorn (if it's 64 bit), it will be the best desktop processor. period.

Its going to be 64bit only plus a AMD 64 FX-55, is coming out soon as well as AMD 64 Dual Core CPU's.

One thing to know is most or all AMD 64's can beat P4's in gaming, but one thing to know is a Dual Core Intel CPU needs 200watt PSU.

But AMD 64 Dual Core CPU's PSU watts are still being thinked.

only reason I would consider intel at this stage in the game is if I needed somewhat-higher than average performance video editing capabilities immediately. That's really the only area where hyperthreading shines

So by the way it sounds I should go ahead and buy it right?, yes my only use for my computer build is high end gaming. Thanks again!

The intel 3.4GHz LGA775 Pentium 4 Extreme edition would be good, too. It might even be better! 2MB L3 Cache! too bad it is only 32 bit, though... Go with AMD, though, it is less evil...

And another question i have is, would 2GHz of memory be really really helpful for games like Mafia, CS, and COD etc...., should i get 2 sticks of 1,024 or 4 of 512? Guys you've been great, Many thanks.

i *think* 2 of 1024 would offer the best results but that would be very expensive. It's been a loong time since I built my last computer so I'm a bit out of the loop with the ram stuff

2GB isn't really needed. It is only really needed in high end stuff like CG Animation, Video Editing, professional photo editing, advertising, CAD, etc. 2 sticks of 512MB will suit you. this will enable dual channeling. If you really have nothing to spend your money on, and you want to throw money at your computer part vendor of choice (newgg.com is the best for the states) you can use it on a 6800GT or X800XT. Dual 10,000RPM 74GB Raptor Hard Drives would help more than you'd think, too.

64 bit CPU's will not go into there full speed until real 64 bit vid games, are out for the PC and a 64bit OS for the desktop.

One thing AMD need to catch up on is getting DDR2 ram slots, and PCI Express slots into there motherboards which Intel have at the moment.

4-512MB. The larger the ram, the worse the timings. Not to mention ot being more expensive. There was a recent thread on 1GB vs 2GB, and everyone with 2GB said they notice a difference when taking out half of it.

FX-53. 👍

I'd do a SCSI setup if I were doing a high-end system.

X800XT PE is the fastest card out. In lower res, the 6800U takes the cakie, but as soon asyou get into 1280x1024/1600x1200 and applying AA/AF, the X800XT takes it.

THe only problem with the FX-53 is the FREAKIN PRICE. It's like $1000 CAD for the processor it's self, you could build a whole new computer of that price, but other then that the processor is future proof and fast! :)

Well I added up my parts list and about $2,290 for a Athlon 64 FX -53, ATI RADEON™ X800 XT Platinum Edition, ABIT AV8 - VIA K8T800 Pro Motherboard , 2GB Extreme Dual Channel DDR PC-3200 SDRAM at 400MHz - 4 x 512MB, and the Creative Sound Blaster® Audigy® 2 ZS Platinum Pro, also some other small things like the case, etc... I thought it was going to be around 3k haha, but im really happy with the price and ready to go get all the parts this week. Thanks guys for the positive feeback, any last minute changes to my list?

hmm... at this cost, it may potentially be cheaper to go dual opteron. You'd get the advantage because your pc will be capable of multithreading, PLUS, you'd be able to say you're using a server as your gaming rig :p.

edit:
Only forseeable problem I can see is finding benchmarks to compare a setup of this kind in a gaming environment rather than an office environment

Its not a bad set up to tell you the truth. My set up consists of
AMD FX-53
Asus A8V Deluxe MOBO
Nvidia 5200 128mb graphic card which will soon be replaced by the X800 pro
or the Nvidia 6800GT
2ghz ddr400

They test the parts here in our lab all the time. :)

<- Works for AMD. :)

i have an athlon 64 in my laptop.

it is teh shizzle. my 32bit videocard runs like a 64 as well.
