I'm not sure it's a problem with idea of a fundamental right as much as it is a problem of believing that violence is a valid route for solving interpersonal problems.A very, very quick search pokes holes in the statement that Switzerland has a comparable level of gun ownership to the US.
In the US, gun ownership by civilians is roughly 120 guns per 100 civilians, while Switzerland clocks in around 30-40 guns per 100 civilians.
A huge difference that JFK Jnr isn't going to touch on is the mentality around guns. The Swiss don't view gun ownership as a right, they view it as an option. There is no centuries old law that they interpret to mean they have the right to own guns and use them to defend themselves from anything that upsets them.
