And i thought certain GTF members were bad...

@ Punk Rock: you stated, "ordinary members trying to act like they're more important than the others (wink wink, nudge nudge)." Would you be talking about something like this? :loudmusic:

not quite, but i see what you mean. this particular member (the one you're highlighting) actually has played a role in increasing the size of this community at the beginning, unlike some new members trying to act like they're all important.

Mind you, it's pretty disappointing to see this stuff break out the moment Jordan's away.

That it is.

But doesn't it always seem to work out like that. And not only here in the forums, but out in the real world. It's a unfortunate event when it happens like this. I'm afraid that if Jordan is upset when he returns, the mods will bear the brunt of his dissapointment. True or False?

A quick look at km's profile show's his birthday listed as 1980. I expected 1990, Some people are just plain stupid. hell, look at incubus on the GTF, he's completely clueless half the time and he's 17.

What Mustang-man is describing has been going on for some time now. This sort of behavior is fueled by it's entertainment value of other members. Is it the lack of moderation? Maybe partly, but let's not forget the source of the posts and conversations that exibit this behavior. There's nothing in the AUP that says you can't be IMmature with your posts and there's little that a Moderator can dO under the guidlines of maintaining the AUP for GTPlanet. Unless the AUP gets updated there's little that a Mod can due. What would be great is if each member posting understood what "Are you getting ready to post a degrading, harsh, or downright stupid comment?" means to a mature person. Perhaps some educating should be done to help those of a lower maturity level to understand what that comment means.

Pako, as I don't really know exactly what the duties of a moderator are, I would assume that they are sort of like a manager at a place of work.?. So in light of that, I am going to have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. There are many things that a moderator could do.
I interperate the AUP as a general "guideline" to be looked at by a moderator. In my opinion a post should not be looked at wether or not it strictly follows or does not follow the AUP. I don't think that it sould be so clerly defined as a "yes" or "no." There is certainly room for moderators to use there best judgement in regards to what a post contains. A moderator could determine on there own if content in a post is deemed acceptable or unacceptabe regardless if it strictly follows the AUP.
Then the moderator could use any means necessary to convey their point to the member or members in question.
Does it have to be a documented statement by PM. Not necessaraly, some times a gentle prod in a post can be very effective. And if it proves ineffective then the next course of action should be take. Progressive discipline. I have seen it done, I use it at my job, and it generally works quite well.
I find it hard to imagine that a moderators hands are tied as I don't think that Jordan would set such strict rules on his staff of moderators. But, I could be totally wrong. ;)

Yes, this would be great if everyone understood what that statement means. However, not everyone does or they don't heed it's message. This is where the moderator should step in to help "educate" the member or members in question. IMO, it is the moderators responsability to take this action. To make sure that the members fully understand the rules.

Please note: I have a very vague understanding of the responsabilities of moderators, so if my statements are inaccurate, please forgive me. :)
On that note, maybe the moderators responsabilities should be know to all so that members would know what to expect of them and how to act accordingly.?.

Peace,

Boom

Yes there is an element of judgement on the Moderator's part as to wheither or not to take action on a particular situation or not. One thing that has to be taken seriously is to make sure that a Moderator's personal views or standards does not inflict additional action outside of the AUP as that is the views of the Owner of the site and that is what needs to be enforced. If, as a Moderator, we wanted to enforce our own personal opinions on others then we would start our own forum where those opinions could be enforced without underminding the views and guidlines of the owner.

Unless there is a expressed consent from Jordan or an update or further clarification from the AUP, then we continue doing what we do.

You are right in saying that being a Mod is much like being a manager in a workplace environment. In a manager's position there are laws and guidlines that need to be followed strictly so as not to get into a lawsuit regardless if the action taken was right or not.

If, as a Moderator, we wanted to enforce our own personal opinions on others then we would start our own forum where those opinions could be enforced without underminding the views and guidlines of the owner.

I might not have been clear enough earlier.(I do that from time to time. ;) ) I am not suggesting that you enforce your personal opinions, as that would be wrong as you have such stated. In essence, I mean moderators have the ability to decide for themselfs to deem an action or statement by a member to be of good or poor taste regardless of the fact that, whatever the members actions were, it might or might not, fit directly into the AUP, but a moderator bases there own actions on anticipating what the Owners wishes are. Therefore, a moderator can safely deem an action inapropriate and suggest that the member correct their actions or further steps will be taken. As a member of the Owners moderator's staff, one needs to be able to anticipate what the Owner wants of his/hers members. Moderators, I would hope were chosen on there ability to perform this task.

Yes, exactly.... Sorry I took your original post a little differently. :)

Do you have something against me for simply wanting help from other people about a small situation im in, or am i just taking your post the wrong way, boom?

Oh but if your referring to my mild writing ability, i just simply have problems explaining things well and end up with run-on sentences...

...and why do you do something like that? Ignorance? Boredom? Do you just want some attention? When yourself and others (many of whom have replied to this thread - you know if I'm talking to you) waste space, don't you realize that you are degrading our community? Don't you care about this online conglomeration of people from around the world, that has been built by myself and thousands of other participants over the past year and a half?

Thomas Jefferson said, "A nation that expects to be ignorant and free, expects what never was and what never will be." GTPlanet is like a virtual nation. If you can't control yourself (and you know who you are), then you had better expect someone to do it for you. Remember that this community is not your own personal plaything - it affects many, many, people who sincerely care about its well-being and morale, and they will not put up with this stupidity.

Hold yourself to a higher standard, use correct grammar, use your brain, and post interesting comments that bring up GTPlanet, not bring it down!

Can I bring GTPlanet down as long as I use my brain and proper grammar/spelling?

And should I stop asking asinine questions that have nothing to do with anything.

Yeah, This is supposed to be a forum community type thing,But NO, peeps are abusing the forum...No point on abusing things! (If you want to call names or any such thing (USE THE P.M. SYSTEM!.)

We are only as good as the individuals that make up our community. Be good. Think before you speak. This is more than a lesson for GTP, it's a lesson for life.

Jordans first flame

I chalk a lot of these "uprisings" to growing pains. Not to say that they should go unchecked, just the opposite really.

When I first arrived a GTP, it was still a relatively small and tightly knit board. Naturally, as time wore on, more people joined. As the board grew, the introduction of new personalities created conflicts. I suspect that these things will happen from time to time. I've seen it come and go before. I don't think it will bring down the board.

This is purely speculative - I'll bet that the median age of GTP regulars has come down quite a bit in the last year. Not that that would necessarily mean anything.

But we do need to watch our posts a bit more closely.

Remember:Are you getting ready to post a degrading, harsh, or downright stupid comment?
Think before you speak! GTPlanet is only as good as you make it.
