It's starting to set in. I can't believe I leave for college in a week. I thought I had more time, but seeing as how this last week flew by, I will be packing up my stuff and heading down to Champaign, Illinois to attend the University of Illinois in no time. I'm excited, but at the same time I am scared. It's my first taste of living on my own. I'm rooming with a buddy, but it's not the same.

Anybody have any words of advice to give me? Any fun college stories to share?

Don't worry about it you'll be fine. The freedom is the best thing to look forward to. I don't have an dorm experience but I am starting my 2nd year on September 6th. Congrats, though! Some people choose not to go to college, so you're starting off in the right direction.

Don't, though, have TOO much fun while in you're in your dorm -- I have a friend that went a little too crazy with his newfound freedom and now HAS to stay home as a result (though he still attends the school). Do not under any circumstances abuse your freedom and you'll be fine.

Fun college stories? My car broke down on my first day of college. Yup, the timing belt snapped on the Thunderbird and I was stranded for not 1, not 2, but 3 hours in the early September afternoon heat. That was fun. :dopey: Thank goodness it happened AFTER I dropped that girl off at her house.

EDIT: At Queen's University (in Kingston, Ontario), they only get 1gb per month. I'm not sure what the limit is at U Ottawa.

That's only partly true, you get 1gb/mo from outside sources, get DC++ on the network and you've got yourself downloads in the range of 500kb/s - 1 mb/s and because it's all internal it doesn't count against your bandwidth.

Oh and Wednesday night people go out, Thusday night people go out, Friday night people go out, Saturday people go out. Not engineers though, they only get to have fun 3 times a semester (frosh week, homecoming, end of exams). :sly:

College is a blast, it is sooo much better then high school since its more relaxed and I found it to be less stressfull.

For advice:
- Look for scholarships, they will help you out and you can find a million of them. Every penny helps since college gets pricey real quick.
- Don't party right away, you will get suckered into things you don't want to do. The costs are to high now adays.
- Join clubs to meet people, best way I found to met new people.
- Have fun, you are coming into the working time, try to have some fun while it lasts.
- Get an internship ASAP!!!!

Yeah... found that out the hard way even after someone told me that when I started in my major.

Considerably less stressful. That is until it comes time to get a job after you get your degree, then it will get stressful.

I spent $800 on books last year. I don't think I put that much money into the T-Bird for fuel. Then again, the T-Bird died in March so...

The above is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT ADVICE. Though, that's basically what I said before. :sly:

I didn't do that last year. :guilty:

Also important.

You didn't join any clubs, man you should. I'm part of the racing team we have on campus and a member of the college Republicans. Both have a great group of people with them. Also I'm in a gold league through the school (on our school's golf course). We have soooo much fun and I've met a ton of people that I know I'll be friends with throughout life.

That's excellent. Definitely this year I will join at least one club.

Maybe they'll have a Swedish Car Club! :dopey: Or a Brick lover's club!

I know a kid who went out every night for two weeks straight. I believe he was a bio major and has been doing fine, though If I remember right he ended up getting his face bashed in and couldn't drink any more because of the meds.

Dukes one night advice is prime. You can have so much more fun without drinking on every other night.

Edit: On the issue of clubs, our gaming organization setup a couple of halo 2 tournaments. Each team got it's own giant screen in a lecture hall.

My team almost won but the bastids changed the rules at the last moment. :indiff:

Good luck on your student career, Event... time to crack open the Champaign? ( :ouch: like you never heard that one a zillion times already)

I know my University days were a hugely important time in my life.... made me the person I am today anyway... I went to Uni when I was 17 and moved away from home for the first time... I only made one big mistake in my 1st year, and that was to move into a flat full of my mates, instead of staying in the flat I was put in with some 'studious' guys... I discovered pretty quickly that, although I may enjoy a beer of a Friday evening, I wasn't cut out for the 24/7 party lifestyle... ! Luckily, I rescued the situation by moving again, with a couple of friends who weren't so hell-bent on trying to break drinking and smoking world records...

You'll meet loads of people, with different backgrounds and characters, but bear in mind that you don't need to rush into anything... you'll make some very good friends in time, but don't expect too much too soon... just be yourself and you'll get on just fine ;) 👍

That's actually the first time I've heard that one!

I don't plan on it. My grandma is paying for almost half of it, and the rest is being paid for by student loans and a $4,500 grant... I was really realy close to not being able to afford to go...
Lucky for you, congrats man. My first choice in college would have cost me $44,500 a year! (without help, but still, thats a ****load of money). Since I don't know what I'm doing yet, I'm taking the cheap way out the first year and I'm gonna live at home 👎 , but once i decide a career, I'm not going cheap with school, because I know it'll be worth it. Again, congratulations to us, class of 2005, and i hope you have a blast

you should be thankful you get this opportunity. im only 20 but im not sure ill ever have it. Im kind of in a money rut right now and so are my parents and im basically paying for my school right now. though its cheap because im stuck in a junior college taking basics for a major i dont care about. I could easily get a few grants and some loans and go to a 4 year university now but its going to be so much of a headache going through all that. Plus i dont really know what i want to do right now. Ive even contemplated being a fire fighter or something like that just so i can go ahead and get my career started. Actually im really confused as to what my situation is right now and what i want to do. So yea have fun, good luck, and be thankful that you have something going for you right now.

Well, Event, good luck to you.
As you know, I too am at the point where college has finally come.

I'd like to go to University of Nebraska, but that's more of a silly reason as to why... :dunce:

I thinking of maybe a college close to home.
