I'll be trying my hand in DJing as soon as my nephew gives me his old equipment when he upgrades. I'm definately looking forward to it. :)

thats awsome, have you heard of combichrist?

ummm... no... I've only gone into dark wave with the most commercial bands... VNV Nation, Icon of Coil, And One, Laibach and the like... I'm not very knowledgeable with the music yet. I do like it a lot and am getting more into it though :)

yeah, you should check him out, i dont really know anything about bolth of those subjects, i mainly stick to hardcore and dnb lol.

integrea, what do you plan on mixin?

DnB and Trance. Maybe some progressive and house stuff. :)

My nephew (who is giving me his old equipment) is a DnB/breakbeat DJ in Pensacola, Florida. Unfortunately, I don't know his dj name.

Mixer, two turntables, a cd turntable I think, and possibly a soundboard. I'll have to buy some studio monitor speakers. It all depends on what all he upgrades, and when.

well, I've been interested in mixing since middle school but never got into until now....

which format is best to learn how to spin? Vinyl or CD?

If this helps out I want to spin Hip hop/D&B/ Hardstyle/ Trance.

I do a bit of DJ'ing with a mate and my brother. Nothing too big but be have our own business cards:dopey: We normally do gigs in small halls and house parties with around 50-150 people. Might have to upgrade the amp and speakers if it picks up because their just enough for small halls. Ive also got two pairs of wicked lights which really help the party atmosphere and a laptop connected to a virtual cd scratcher. I dont use it much, bit of a waste of money tbh because the program is far from smooth and reliable. Not something you want to be messing around with at a large party.

Heres the rest of our equipment. Me and my brother practice a lot in the garage.

Sadly, my cousin never gave me his old stuff. 👎

I mainly mix R & B, Hip Hop, Funky House & dance. Recently, I haven't had many bookings for R & B or Hip Hop sets, everything seems to be funky house at the moment.

I practise at home with Vestax CDX-05 and Vestax mixer. Depending on which club I go to the standard is normally Technics SL's or Pioneer CDJ's. I started DJ'ing with vinyl and then moved over to CD although I still have my vinyl collection.

If your struggling with mixing, a guy called Johnathan has a great site over at DJ Tutor.com. It has loads of video tutorials with clear explanations. Definitely worth a look.

Yes! I'm big into mixing. I've got a set of Technics SL1200 MKII's (original and best)...

... back home in the UK with a Citronic mixer and some big Jamo speakers, but it's all too much of a hassle to ship/bring out to Hong Kong so I've not been able to play them for seven years!

Right now I'm using a Vestax VCI-100...

When I go back to England in May I might either get a flight case and bring my turntables back or sell them and buy them again over here. Either way if I do get some proper t/tables set up here I will also get Serato Scratch Live as I've been able to find all my favourite music from the early to mid 90's on MP3 format. It would cost me thousands of pounds to get them all on vinyl although a do have a good few hundred records back in England.

What do I play? My passion is early 90's Hardcore, Jungle and Drum and Bass but I don't really like much made after 1996. I also thoroughly enjoy Electro, Tech House and Minimal kind of stuff, but for me it's just not fun to mix as it's mostly at about 128 bpm and doesn't really present much of a challenge. Personally, I love chopping up tunes on the crossfader which I feel old jungle and hardcore is perfect for! The Vestax is an awsome bit of kit and the feeling of the little turntables is uncanny, but at the end of the day it's just missing the feeling of flicking through a crate of records getting that sexy vinyl out of the sleeve and throwing it on a turntable. I miss that a lot!

See my last comment mate. There's nothing that beats the feeling of vinyl mixing, but these days with MP3 and the likes of awesome sites like Beatport, digital music is so accessible. IMO if you have the cash to spend get a set of Technics SL1210's a simple mixer and Serato Scratch Live that way you get the best of both worlds - playing all your digital music using vinyl. It's not cheap but well worth it!

EDIT: Hmmm, I have just realised this thread is quite old!
