There was a pretty girl on the track the other day driving a Lotus. Oh wait... you guys are talking about the game, not RL.
Turning and handling of your cars dont capture the essence of 'steering'...it almost feels as if you can just turn and head your car in the direction you want to make adjustments with no sense of weight or negative gravity working against you...hard to explain. Also, cars feel overly drifty and also easy to recorrect once you loose control....again, there seems to be a lack of weight being tossed around. Also the driving experience doesnt give you the sensation that your car is bobbing or bouncing even the slightest bit especially when you start to push the car to its limits....its almost as if your car's tires arent actually turning on the pavement to propel forward but rather your car is slightly gliding above the surface.
Yes, I agree completely. That's exactly what I noticed about it first thing. The steering input in Forza has this arcade feel to it... you can tell it's not really the tires turning the car, but rather the steering input makes the car yaw rather like a hovercraft.
I tried doing some manuevers with inobvious consequences and the game handled them nothing like RL... instead the car happily turns the way it was asked to. As if it weren't really simulating the tire contact at all.
The other thing I noticed right away was how poorly it simulated burning out the tires. It just adds strange random bits of yaw left and right as you burn out... RL is nothing like that. On a flat, even surface the RL car will burn out in pretty much a straight line... but if you find any irregularities in the road surface, the car will pitch (sometimes quite hard) to one side. GT simulates this quite nicely. Forza... umm... no relation to RL. Sorry.
Nope... I'd have to say that Forza's physics seem more like a more advanced version of Midnight Club physics.
In GT, when you catch a little air or your one of your tires loses contact with the pavement, you actually feel it on the recovery. Also in the replay mode, outside the car view, looking at the car hitting turns and corners doesnt appear to bottom out or dip to shift weight to one side in Forza. Am I imagining this or are perhaps these physics just more unrealistically exaggerated in Gran Turismo 4?
Nope. GT4 does them right. That's how it is in RL when tires unload or lose contact... the effect is pretty dramatic.
If you want to learn about this in RL, try going hard over the Lost Hill turn on Button Willow raceway in southern california... that's a right hander with the apex at the crest... it's a pretty sharp hill, and you dukes of hazard sideways across it. That is, the car is nearly airborne from the apex with the tires completely unloaded and just skittering contact with the road as it flies sideways. You learn all about the effects of having different tires gaining and losing traction in rapid succession on this turn. And it takes guts to do it at full speed since the car is momentarily in freefall as it shoots sideways toward the edge of the track, then suddenly has a lot of grip again just in time as it lands. This couldn't possibly be a good thing for my poor wheel bearings! But it sure is a fun turn!
Anyway... yeah... the way GT4 handles that kind of thing feels about the same to me. It's not overexaggerated.
