Hi I'm new to the forum, was just wondering if anyone here is interested in drag racing at all? Anyone follow the NHRA pro stock season?

Don't get mad at me, but I really don't like it at all. I sometimes watch it when I'm desperate for any form of Motorsport. Actually that was just once. I think GT and Top Gear have influenced us to appreciate the more, um, well, better (for want of a better word, I'll edit when I find it) forms of Motorsport (except for the awesome Veyron vs. Typhoon Jet type races, but NHRA is nothing like that). I would rather watch NASCAR than drag races. Don't get me wrong, I don't just hate it for no reason, I just don't find it that appealing. I gave it a chance and it didn't work out, maybe I'll give it another go some other time.

Yeah, I could see how it would be boring to people who just watched it on TV for the first time. I grew up around it though, so when you understand all the mechanics that go into it I guess it's a little different. Same thing goes for all motorsport I'm sure.

Not really, no. I've seen it in person a few times, just for the sake of getting out and doing something, getting around some powerful and noisy cars, and for something different from what I usually do, but just can't really get into it.

I have a friend (a bit of a self-proclaimed GT fanboy and unregistered lurker here) who likes drag racing and does it himself with his Mustang. I've went with him down to the local strip a few times. Here's a video his girlfriend shot of him drag racing, with him in the Mustang in the lane nearest the camera. I'm tagging along in the passenger seat, just for the heck of it. The voice you hear is another buddy of ours who also tagged along that night. On this particular night it wasn't an official race but was just "test and tune".

So, anyway, I'm there once in a while just because, but can't get into it at all.

In Top Fuel form, 8,000-ish HP is never boring :D.

The part where they blip the throttle at about 2:30 always impresses.

I made my NHRA thread for NHRA fans long ago here: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=111482

I don't just want to leave this post without posting something relevant, so let me just say that I do have love for drag racing, though I'm mostly into sportscar racing. Drag racing can actually be very fun to watch. Think about trying to win on a holeshot down the eighth-mile or just before the 1/4 mile. I'm so used to quarter-mile drags that I don't really consider those who do eighth-mile drag racing. Regardless, no greater rush than drag racing.

Also think Drag Racing comes across terribly on the TV, it's all about the explosion of noise, power and smell. You don't get the feeling on TV of a nitro methane V8 behemoth rattling your rib cage.

I can't say I enjoy Drag Racing on TV that much (not least because the coverage is woeful), but live, it's the best motorsport out there.

Lol true enough, never was a big fan of the nitro cars though. Favorite class has always been pro stock, my dad was an engine builder and he built a chevy hemi mountain motor for IHRA years back (812 cubic inches). He was the crew chief for the team and I always traveled with them and helped out around the pits. I feel so lucky I got to take part first hand in racing when I was just a kid.

The best class IMO is pro mod. That Turbo camaro is wicked fast. Dominated and set new speed record when I was at norwalk Ohio. Pretty sure he's beat it again though.

Oh yeah Brad Personett, he used to drive for Titan. I've met him a few times, he drives for that Al-Anabi team now.

Wat?! Please tell me there's still a Turbo car that dominates. Anyways I can't wait to go back to Norwalk this year.

I didn't get to see that car run as he had issues. There were some big pro mod crashes during practice though so hopefully I can make it there for Friday night this year.

Yeah I'm problably going to the gators this year, usually go every year. Kinda sucks when you used to race and then you go as a spectator, feels wierd.
