Any interest in starting a Vintage Trans Am series

Ok if we need a list of people interested we should start one soon and my name can be put down. I think we should all race against each other first and get to know everybodys strengths and weaknesses and find out who has a mic. I have a few friends that i race classic cars against and they are able to hold there own and im sure they might be interested.
 
Count me in. I'm available any weeknight after about 7:30pm Eastern time. And if it lands on the weekends I can plan around it.

I would love to do this. I need to learn set ups better and I dont mind bringing up the rear.. I just want to try this out . In my favorite era of cars. This is such a great idea , I cant wait to learn and race from you guys

I remember watching a episode of American Muscle Car where they have featured the Trans-Am series back in it's Golden Glory Days. It's a shame when the SCCA announced it was bringing back the Trans-Am series they chose not to go with the current Challenger, Mustang and Camaro models and stayed with the tube-framed chassis.

I have a '69 Camaro that's all prepped and ready to race(RM'd). I was hoping to use it for the Daytona Continental when that event fell through. I just didn't want this car to go to waste. :) I also have a USB headset and can race on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night if needed.
 
I have a head set and have a 69 Camaro RM that I have been trying to do laguna seca in . Still need work , I also have the GT350 R mustang and a 70 Challenger RM . I also have the 63 Z06 vette but I think its overpowered for the event you are planning .
Im available any week night and most weekends until Summer then will have to plan as I ride my harley on alot of charity rides on the weekends. I also have the 66 shelby cobra as well. You all can add me online so i know when you are practicing . So I can get some tips on racing lines and set ups if that is ok?

Personally, I believe a PP limit is better not all the cars were the same. Like the Challenger has much more HP than the Camaro, but cannot handle as well. It needs that extra umph to keep up and with a well handled driver can keep pace with a Camaro. I have yet to honestly meet anymore able to keep the GT350 from stepping out alot, I have problems with it. And leave it to the person driving the car to decide on tires. I do not believe back in the days teams were told to use only certain tires. I like running Racing Softs for short runs (below 12 laps) and my cars are setup accordingly.

The idea is to recreate the events, to have another governed body of racing. Go to Nascar if you want that.

I do however agree on the no driving Aids, Except ABS 1. You will find alot of people will not race because of this but you do weed out alot of the "kids" and you will find alot of good competition.

The other issue, it is very hard to pass some one cleanly. There have been many times a slower car in front of me kept me from winning because I could not pass him cleanly. I believe a general rule of thumb is if you are being lapped, or a easy to see faster car is trying to pass you, let them.

I would fully expect once this is going, we can set up championships.

We can decide on regulations later and we should definetly limit certain cars because of hp. Kalmiya we need regulations because the Challenger cannot handle as well as the Camaro. And the GT350 can keep up with them, i know i've tuned it well enough without the rear end spinning out so much. As far as tuning some of the older cars, look at some of the tuning garages and look at some of their setups.
 
Yes it was a good race last night.I do agree that you should not restrict the HP or make PP a mandate.As for passing and slower cars I agree that there has to be an unwritten rule about letting the faster car through.Hopefully we can get something going tonight again.

The Vette is quick and so is the AC Cobra,maybe add weight to make it equal?

As Said though, the Challenger has a max 788 HP 800ish ft lbs Tq, Vs Camaros 565HP and 550 Ft lbs of TQ. Speed Vs Handling. I can run lap times in the same general time area with both cars on Laguna and Deep Forest. I prefer my Camaro, but still it is all about how it is handled and set up.

If there are any regulations, let it be a PP type limit. As said before, not everyone was running the same power, or car, or tires back then. If you want to all run the same then go do Nascar.

I haven't really played with the GT350 too much but with this idea coming forth I will be. See what I can do. I really just need to learn to drive it perhaps.

Correct it is all in the setup and handling.I used the Mustang Trans Cammer last night just need to tune it better it's up around 850 HP?
 
We can sort this out this weekend and figure out which cars will need restriction and which wont. And a PP limit is a better idea.
 
If its cool with the guy who posted thos i would like to start a list of people interested in this. I'll edit this post accordingly so i guess pm me or post here of your interested at this point.
 
Camikaze i believe thats a good list of cars for this. Plymouth Baracuda, Shelby GT350, Chevy Camaro, Ford Mustang Mach 1, Chevy Corvette, Shelby Cobra, Dodge Challenger, i believe thats about it.
 
Hey I would be very interesting in something like this. I've got almost every muscle car and vintage race car in the game... I have options.

Why not just pick a single car, like the 69' RM Camaro, equalize the power and weight and race with that. If you allow a whole series of cars, one of them is going to be better than the others and if it's not something you can buy off the shelf, then many of the rest of the drivers will lose interest. Perhaps you could include the Challenger RM if you can equalize weight and HP to offer two model choices.

Because Its Trans am and not a one make race. There will always be a better driver or car as it seems, but thats the challenge of it. I would rather the PP be equalized out rather than everyone in the same car. And for those that lose interest , They must not have really wanted to race in the first place . i am by far probably the worst racer here, but would love to try this am not asking for anything but to race and learn from the better guys. This is my oppinion and take it at that , sorry if it offends anyone

I realize it's a Trans Am race but you must also realize that you don't have a full grid or even partial grid of true Trans Am cars. The great difference will be in downforce. The Camaro has 20/50 downforce for example whereas the Shelby GT350 has none. If you're interested in equal racing those two cars cannot race equally. All the points system will do is allow the Shelby a lot more HP so it'll be very fast in a straight line but very slow in the corners. You won't actually be racing each other and because of the big speed differences it will make for more accidents if the cars are in close proximity on the track.

The best series I've been in have been either spec races with identical cars, or series where a group of cars are available that are pretty much identical like the JGTC GT300/500 cars. You get close, tight racing and usually, the best driver wins, not the best car. If what you're looking for is just a parade of cool cars from the 60's and 70's that's cool too. But if you want to actually race muscle cars, you either have to leave the race cars out or pick one or two that are relatively equal.

Actually one suggestion might be to exclude the racecars altogether and stick with road cars only. You could find a median weight to equalize the cars and median hp and have relatively equal racing.
 
For those who think the cars wont be equal, thats what the point of practicing this weekend is. We could put up a PP limit and see where the cars stack up against eachother. If anyone would like to add me to try this out. PSN ThisGuy70

I think the definition is starting to get hazy...I believe the OP wanted to allow all of the Trans Am cars (Camaros, Challengers, Mustangs) on the track together as they were during the Trans Am hay days. I think Johnny wants good, clean, close racing (who doesn't right?). There needs to be some definition on what is expected here.

I think it will be interesting to not pose any restrictions because some cars have the handling advantage and some have a horsepower advantage. But everything should equalize and I believe it'll still be the best driver coming out on top rather than the best car. I also believe there should be no traction control and normally I would say no ABS either since these cars didn't have ABS but trying to control a 5-700 horsepower car on racing tires with no ABS will result in a lot of people sliding off...especially at Laguna Seca.

Just my food for thought.
