Any way to make my DSL faster?

Yeah basically my question is in the title. My current DSL is running at 120kb  DL speed.

What's the "advertised" speed? Expect your ADSL speeds to be 80% of the advertised speed. Also, your distance from the phone companies equipment can have a difference as well.

Try going to www.dslreports.com and running their speed test. Submit your zip code and ISP information to compare what others in your area with that ISP are getting.

If you are getting what everyone else is averaging there's little you can do. However, if you are considerably slower than the average there are some different things to look at such as:

Wiring
Line quality
Routers/switches
Other Computers/Devices using bandwidth
Nic Card issues/Drivers

Good luck!

Can you overclock a cable modem? If so can you tell me here or if you don't want to...via PM?

Overclock your DSL modem.

The way I understand ADSL to work, the service is made available on the line at the specified speed regulated by equipment at the ISP transponder station. Your ADSL modem doesn't regulate the connection speed and is usually rated at 10mps or higher capability.

^ That's what I thought too. I really don't think the modem is what would do it for you.

I've heard that the modems you rent from your ISP may limit your connection to make you upgrade your connection...Sounds like easy money for them from people who know nothing about computers and the Internet.

Go to broadbandreports.com and check your distance from the CO. I believe at the farthest distance, it will go down to 192kb, which is 24KB/s.

how can i overclock mine? I'm using SBC dsl and the modem is a SpeedStream 5100

You can't overclock your modem. It was a joke.

Why don't you put a Type-R sticker on your modem? It adds 50 kbps.

 but any ways I heard theres some kind of tweak for memory allowances or something like that to make my comp faster. can anyone walk me through it or can you ever do it?

Memory has nothing to do with how fast your internet connection is.

Call SBC and ask them about your service plan.

Wow, you have the exact same service and the exact same modem as me. Normally I download about 160kb/s, but your 120 doesn't sound too off. I do my speed tests from the Cali servers from dslreports. http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=1 and I usually get 1200 d/l or better. Best up I got was like 380 or something like that.

Do you pay $25 a month or more?

I have a SpeedStream modem too. Mine's a 5360. The ISP I go through (its local) uses SBC software so basically I'm using SBC DSL as well. I hate paying $50 a month. I wish I could check on SBC's site but it keeps saying I'm already a customer. Bah.

You could always give your provider more money.

No way. $50 is enough for me.

I think I read something somewhere about memory allowances or something to make make DSL faster. anyone know of it?

Run a tweak test. You can set your RWIN to different numbers. Before I get something wrong...I'll get you a link. This is it: http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/626 I also found out P2P eats up a lot so when you do your tests...exit out of those... it raised my score from 30kb to 1200!

Ok...I have been searching the web today because my I-Net was limping along at 10kbps. I found out if you turn off your modem for about a minute or so and plug it back in it raises it a bit. I did it and went from 1500 to 3000 which is the highest this computer has ever seen. :) Hope that helps even though it won't....and I'll get yelled at for bringing up an old thread. I'l crawl back into my hole now. .....
