Anyone else feel like Mazda is skimped in GT5?

I feel like out of all the Japanese car-makers, Mazda is the least represented in GT5.

Uh, there's 97 Mazdas in GT5. That's close to 10% of ALL cars. No, I don't think it's under-represented. Even if you don't count the duplicates. You could make the same case with all Japanese manufacturers. Honda has lots of unnecessary NSX's and S2000's, Nissan the Skylines, Mitsubishi the 3000GT's/GTO's, Toyota the MR2's, Vitz's, etc.

I would rather see other manufacturers car counts rise.

Wow. This thread started off so nice, with beautiful pictures of some good examples of Mazdas that weren't included in the game. Then...

But, I think there are plenty of Mazdas in the game. I might have chosen some different models than PDI chose, but then someone would complain about the cars I left out.

I totally agree, those are some sweet looking rides.
(I bet that pickup truck would've been a blast to drift around Tsukuba...)

The thing is, EVERYBODY - including myself - who plays GT5 can more than likely sit there and rattle off a list a half a mile long (or about 0.8 kilometers for the majority of the world that uses the Metric System) of cars they believe/feel were left out of the game. Unless by some wildly off chance we see DLC in the future, the fact of the matter is the cars in the game are the cars in the game.
Yeah, based on what we got, the "one thousand cars" of advertising joy is an obvious stretch and a bit of a let down, but here's the thing:
  • You don't have to own all the cars (and if you're in the USA like me, you can't even get all possible cars in the game)
  • Even if you choose to collect all the cars, you surely don't have to drive all the cars in the game

Despite the list (that feels like it's twice as long as the list of cars left out of the game) of flaws/oversights/issues/quirks with GT5, I choose to accept it for what it is and find enjoyment in what I have. For example, take a Subaru 360 '58, max it out and give it over 3x it's standard horsepower (which would be like a Veyron with over 3,000 HP!), paint it a funky color (I went with Black-Eye Purple Metallic), and set loose on the Kei-car Special Event. It's a blast, considering the car kinda feels like it's driving on ice - even with Racing Soft tires!

There's constructive criticism which is great - especially if PD listens and it leads to making GT5 better, but then there's (and I say such with no disrespect or malicious intent) pointless whining.
Given the absence of DLC, which do you think "they should have included the ________ car" falls under?

(Just my $0.02 on it.)

Peace...

I want the Grand-Am RX-8 GT. I've seen it and heard it at a few races. It makes a very loud, high pitched humming noise, and backfires are like gunshots.

We have an RX-8 race car, don't we? Even if it's an LM, there is no actual RX-8 LM, and the paint job on it is very similar to the Grand-Am racers around when GT4 came out. Had anyone else made this connection?

On a similar note, I feel Nissan is skimped in GT5. There is an imported Blue Skyline R32 here in my town. Don't know nor would anyone other than the owner know what trim level it is, and the owner likely has no idea how differently it drives from any other R32. But I haven't seen this particular R32 from Greenacres, Florida in the game! Garbage!

Edit: I also feel NASCAR is skimped in GT5. We only get what, 10-20 cars? There are over 40 different stickers for this car, but no, we only get 10-20 different sticker sets.

There really are more NASCAR race cars than most were expecting. Before the game was released, PD announced there were like 10 of them. I remember that because it certainly wasn't 20. Or 15 for that matter.

I totally agree, those are some sweet looking rides.

Totally understandable, but this thread brought to light quite a few things a handful of us didn't know. Even more than just the few of us, because of all the guests. If anything, Toyota is represented the least of the Japanese manufacturers. There isn't even a stock Supra in the Dealership. That's asinine, but I completely expect there to be a Premium STOCK Supra once PD updates the selected standard cars.

And how does this have anything to do with what I said?

You (and other people that constantly bring this argument up) made it seem like that with less "duplicates" there would have probably been more unique cars. That's not the case unfortunately, since they are clearly used to bump up the total count in an easy way, as even you say. That is what I wanted to tell.

By the way, I don't personally think that every unique Premium car in GT5 took 6 months to complete (especially the 3 VW historic vehicles which seem to have less detail/polygons than other ones). That is probably one of the many exaggerations (or lies of omission) told by KY.

Did these duplicate magically get into the game? Or did it need someone spending time, cleaning them up, getting the driver inside and animated in the right position, getting the wheels updated to 3d.....ALL took TIME, which PD clearly did not have enough of.

So YES not putting some of the standards in WOULD have saved PD some time and enabled them to do other things. But it wouldn't have let them put the big 1000 cars line anywhere. Which I admit could clearly have been some Sony numpty, like the one who pushed for 1080p and 3d support.

GT5 may have over 1000 cars, but I only ever drive about 25 of them. There are great swaths of utterly undesirable cars. And that's ok I suppose, if GT is more or less an automotive encyclopedia. But I'd rather see historically significant models (all of the above I posted, I feel are) appear first then they can spend time pumping in the hordes of grey and beige 'shapes' like Toyota Yaris (Yari?) and Citroen something-or-others.

Also, the RX-8LM sounds nothing like the GT. Actually, the Furai should sound almost identical (slightly different due to the 3-1 header) to the RX-8 I linked. It sounds like a rather weak 2 rotor though.

Actually, it is more than likely the case.

Gran Turismo 5 used the 1000+ tagline as pretty much the lead of its advertising campaign. There is just something about the number 1000 that grabs customers attention, a gimmick if you will. Now, if Polyphony showed half the attention to detail show people attribute them and removed duplicates, the number would drop below the fabled 1000. Surely other, unique cars would be added to make up the remainder.

900+ cars just doesn't have the same marketing ring to it.

I was really looking forward to Eunos Cosmo (my favourite Mazda) and I was so dissapointed when I realised it's not in GT5.
Mazda is very poorly represented in GT5.
But - Toyota has even worse representation in GT5.
Newer Supra is a standard while older model is a premium. Toyota GT-One is standard and Mazda 787B (worse car in my oppinion) is a premium.
No premium Celicas (apart from the WRC model)? Alright..
Toyota is very poorly represented, much worse than Mazda - at least Mazda has 787B premium.

All manufacturers are poorly represented, either due to lack of cars or because of too many duplicates.

I would rather have a Mazdaspeed 3 than 10 varients of the RX-7 that are basically the same. It's not the shear number of Mazdas in the game that make the brand poorly represented, but the fact that there are so many models excluded. I also agree that there are other brands that are even more poorly represented.

Whether it's 'right' or not is debatable, but it is at least understandable why European and North American (and Australian) makers are not as well represented.

Out of the 97 Mazda's, there are 23 FD-generation RX-7's, 7 RX-8's, a simply ridiculous 35 Miatas, and 6 FC-generation RX-7's, and a utterly pointless 4 Cosmo Sports (they are all identical)

So 75 out of those 97 cars are just FIVE models (58 are two!). If you're willing to follow this logic, there are only about 26 'unique' Mazda's in the game (ok this is a bit of a stretch, but still) So this is where I am basing my 'least represented' statement.

I am surprised that the series II RX-8 (2009+) isn't available as a new car. I also wonder why there are premium RX-8's and RX-7's, but the majority of them that could have used the exact same game model end up being standards (this goes for many other makes too, I'm just a Mazda guy so I KNOW there's nothing different between a 2004 and a 2007 RX-8 besides the different paint colors you could get).
