Anyone else wish there were a PC version of GT4?

...or am I the only one?

I've got a PS2 (obviously); I've also got an Xbox. But I also have 9 PCs and a Mac, at least 4 of which have significantly more CPU power and graphics power than any console on the market (the PS3 might be able to give one or more of them a run for their money but I'm not entirely convinced of that yet).

While the graphics on GT4 aren't bad, coming from HL2 @ 2048x1536 with the detail settings maxed out, with 4x FSAA and 8x AF... it's a little (ok, ok, a lot) disappointing.

My evaluation of GT4 so far is that it's an outstanding game hamstrung by a crappy platform. As far as game consoles go, the PS2 isn't bad (I still think the XBox and GC are better but that's just me), but there's just no way what amounts to a $100-$200 computer can compete with a good, properly built and properly tuned gaming PC.

As I see it, the PC is the ideal platform for GT4:
-More graphics power than a console
-The graphics are not processed by the same processor that does the physics calculations the way I *believe* the PS2 does it, which frees up more resources for both graphics and physics engines
-Graphics would be far better; much higher resolution, much more detailed. HL2-level graphics would not be inconcievable.
-Hard drives are your friend; they reduce loading times compared to optical drives (and the load times for GT4 are annoyingly long...)
-Hard drive based game data storage would also allow for an even larger car and track database; PERSONALLY, I find that while the selection of cars in GT4 is significantly larger than GT3, and the largest of any racing sim ever (afaik), there are a whole bunch of cars that were left out, presumably due to a lack of space on the DVD.

The game itself is great... it'd just be far better as a PC game than a console game. Does anyone else agree with me on that, or am I on my own on this one?

Of course we would love to see gt on pc, but falling short of using an emulator or buying out PD, it aint gonna happen anytime soon. Call me a pessimest, but ive given up waiting for it to happen. ;(

Yeah, it would definately be great on PC. I guess we'll have to settle for Live For Speed. (Not that it doesnt rule or anything) :D

yup definetly agree, got sweet new comp and played HL2 on same settings as you. to be honest i was quite shocked at the level of detail. i went to examine gt4 and thought' wow these graphics are pretty good, imagine what ill be like on power of full gaming comp'

yup ill keep wishing ill be on pc one day.

Why wouldn't they come out for PC. I have a PC and since i love GT so much im going out tomm to get a PS2 and GT4. But i would be thrilled if they would FINALLY come out for PC. So many advantages! More people would get into the game. And yes as Geeky1 mentioned way more cars, tracks, better graphics etc. If anyone knows why they dont't come out for PC please explain to me!

Most people would end up downloading the game, and not everyone has a computer that can handle such high-end games.

I can't even run Live For Speed without a kajillion jaggies all over the place.

But...if it came out for both systems(which i trying to implement) then it would widen their horizons. If you dont have a good PC at least you have the option to upgrade your PC or get a PS2. If it just continues to come out on Playstations...they won't get as many fans.

Thats exaclty why the PS3 is coming out. THe PS3 With be able to handle HL2 Graphics maxed out with ease. THe new media is called blu-ray which is capable of 53gbs in dual-layer mode!!! So don't worry, only 1 or 2 more years and you'll have your wish.

The size of the disc doesn't mean that the games on it will look good.... it might be a game looking like the first pac man with a 50 hour soundtrack on the disc and the disc would be completely full.

phlyerphanatic
No yer not :sly: . It's on my wish list. I'd love a PC version of this game,so would my wife and kids...it would free up another TV.
emulator and a dvd drive theoretically would work. My video card is screwed thoug him saving for alienware nvidia SLI's w00t! major ownage they are

IMHO. The biggest thing for a Gran Turismo PC Platform game would be Add On Cars and Tracks.

Something like Codemaster's Sport Car GT (SCGT) racing sim.

I tend to doubt that it has anything to do with piracy... no, I suspect that the reason it isn't out on PC can be found in the 3rd-from-the-bottom line on this page:
http://www.polyphony.co.jp/

Sony owns Polyphony Digital; Sony has a vested interest in keeping it a PS2 only game.

AOE, you're forgetting one thing... the resolution of the display. TVs are 720x480 or 720x576; even HDTV maxes out at 1920x1080. While that's higher than most people run on their computer monitors, it's still not particularly high resolution.

The PS3 will never equal the image quality of a contemporary gaming computer on a decent monitor until TVs improve.

And while blu-ray can hold 53gb of data, it's also significantly slower than a hard disk. Higher latency, lower transfer rates. Which means that load times will still be longer.

As for not being able to afford a graphics card capable of running it... take a look at the HL2 graphics engine guys. It's DX9 capable, yes, but it's an adaptive engine that adjusts the settings based on your hardware. You can run HL2 on a GeForce3 Ti200 @ 1600x1200 with the detail settings maxed out... I've done it. It doesn't look quite as good in DX8 as it does on the 6800GT in DX9, but it runs just fine.

HL2 has really set a new standard for physics and graphics engines in video games, FPSes in particular. However, the same principle of an adaptive graphics engine can be applied to any genre, any game you like, should the developer choose to implement it.

What it comes down to is this:
-PCs will continue to be better gaming platforms than consoles (albeit more expensive), as long as you don't go out and buy the cheapest thing on Dell's site or something

-Sony SHOULD port GTx to the PC, as they'd sell more PC games and console games at $50 than they will consoles AND games at a total of $200 to people that don't already own PS2s.

-Despite the above fact, Sony will never port GTx to the PC. And using an emulator won't get you much. The load times will be better, but the graphics will still be abysmal compared to PC games.

Not me, I wouldnt have the money for the graphics card 👎

exactly. doom is my favorite game in the world but i can't play doom 3 because i don't care enough about pc games to spend the money on a video card with more processing power and memory than some lower end PCs. my computer is primarily used for websurfing and taking pictures off my camera and porn

the best thing about consoles is that you buy it and it's in date with games that will always run on it for at least a few years. even better when developers spend their time really pushing the systems' capabilities to the limit like i feel PD have tried to do with gt4

i also think pc games have dropped in quality severely since the "graphics revolution" took place. i've really tried to get into games that the magazines have raved about, but i just can't do it. to me, nothing will beat the likes of doom or diablo or system shock. but that's a whole other story

i also like the exclusivity of gt to the playstation consoles. it gives you something else (along with tekken and final fantasy) to pwn the xbox whingers about :P

Super Jamie:
Solution to PC quality (or lack thereof): Build your own. It's hardly difficult... a rhesus monkey could do it. The problem is that OEMs are still run by bean counters (at least until you get to the high end ones like Voodoo and Falcon). Going to a small local vendor or better yet, building your own using HIGH QUALITY parts is going to get you a much better system than you get from Dell or Gateway or whatever. More importantly, it will also get you more value for your money. OEM PCs are, almost by definition, nearly impossible to upgrade. The really high end Dells have AGP slots and AGP graphics (or PCI Express now...), but the cheaper the machine is, the less upgradeable it's going to be, ESPECIALLY if you buy it from an OEM.

WRONG! my video card runs doom 3 on medium setting and it was $124.95australian. you can get ATI radeon 9800's for under $200aus now they used to be $900 cards. and they will run doom3 on high settings. but hey as i mentioned before go nvidia SLI if you have the money the 6 series SLI cards own the ATI x850xt 512mb card like you wouldnt beleive. and the overclockign capabilitys of them. however theyre mostly AGP's atm which sucks but there brining PCI cards out slowly.

lol. i fix computers (and ATMs and banks and pos systems and networks and...) for a job and since i was a young teenager, so every pc i've ever owned has been home built. i still don't want to spend that much money on a videocard so i can play one good game for a few months, when i can buy a console and play many good games for many years, and have more money to spend on my real car

Gran Turismo will always be tied to the current generation of Playstation, for the obvious reasons, as it has been discussed many times before.

Yes but that's not the point... the point is that people (myself included) enjoy *****ing and moaning about it

i say we stop comparing hl2 to gt4

Dunno why... it's a perfectly valid comparison. Both are widely considered to be the most advanced games yet for the platforms they run on, which makes comparisons not only inevitable but quite logical...

but there's just no way what amounts to a $100-$200 computer can compete with a good, properly built and properly tuned gaming PC.

that answers your question. or perhaps, it would if you make it "a $100-$200 single purpose computer". single purpose meaning it does nothing but, for the sake of simplification, play games. it does not need to be nearly as flexible and verbose as a standard home computer setup, which means they can make it much more effective and using it's power.

considering when it was built(before the xbox and game cube), it does it's job very well, too. I doubt much of the gt4 market share has an amazing computer, nor the want to spend over a grand to upgrade it and have it properly set up. I'm sure most of the market share doesn't muck about with the insides of pcs, either. I am sure the cost of a proper good port (who makes those, these days? :( ) outweighs the benefit of slight extra market share.

wow, thats like comparing an enzo to a honda insight. both are the most advanced in their market...

i think its a great idea. for a few reasons.

1. better graphics, getting an emulator will not make the graphics better, just maybe a bit more clear due to being able to run higher resolution.

2. online, it would almost be a must for a comp game, of course we all thought it was a must for the ps2 one also

3. UPDATES, big one here, they could send patches with more cars, tracks and bug fixes, than we could know what to do with.

4. unlimited car and track poential, at least until you hd fills up.

5. homemade/3dr party download cars, this is being done in the nfs series. could fill some of the gaps that pd made, and put in cars the they just refuse to model for one reason or another.

6. SOUNDPACKS, if pd wont get the engine sounds right somebody else can.

7. last but not least, MODS, once a game comes out on the pc and its popular people will mod it, its inevitable. the possiblilties could be endless.

I really dont see whats wrong with the engines, everyone says they suck but they're just fine, has anyone seen the video of the M3 GTR racecar at the ring? Listen to that and compare it to GT4, the engines sound just fine.

Having GT4 on the PC will ruin the game, it's a console and should remain there. And PD will lose half of there sales if it was on PC, as everyone will get burnt copies and not worry about buying it for the PS2 or PC.
