Just trying to find out why you have such an unsubstantiated opinion about Apple and what they should do with their free time. The more information I get from you, the less I am convinced that you actually have any valid points for your feelings towards Apple.

I think its because I'm an Ipod hater and a proud owner of a Sansa and am a member here:

That's all well and good. Glad you found a product you like. I still don't see the validations of your feelings towards Apple. I will refer you back to this post.

I don't care for iPod's either, but I still have a 4gb from waaaaaaay back that still works.

It feels like they've brainwashed everyone to buy their product.. I don't know how.

Because most people, wait for it...

Wait...

...

are idiots.

Apple has a brilliant marketing team that has learned to play on the "I want to be hip" mentality most people suffer from, and they have fairly easy to use devices and software (though no where near the best by any measure) that everyone from Grandma to Miss Teeny can use.

And their products aren't bad, but they aren't great. People just don't care enough to research other options what so ever. Same problem with politics, where people think you must vote either Republican or Democrat.

The average consumer is an idiot. And Apple tends to lock them into their products with iTunes and the old DRM crap.

@Jondot
Well UNIX was intended to be used for free software, but PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS and Javascript had no intention of being used for a profit or no profit. UNIX on the other hand supports open source programs.

Well it doesn't make the blindest bit of sense, but at least you tried.

Well, why doesn't some one make the consumer realize that they're idiots?

No, how about why?

You seem to have got it into your head that Apple are some sort of brainwashing corporation that forces the public into parting with their money. And not just that, but that they must be stopped at all costs. Fight the power, maaaan!

No. People act on impulse. Apple products are shiny, nice to use and generally nice to own. Of course people are taken in by Apple's advertising - it's brilliant advertising. That's what it's there to do.

Another fun example: have you ever driven a Nissan Skyline? Have you ever driven any Nissan? If the answer is no (which I suspect it is, if I've judged your age correctly), then you too are guilty of being taken in by a product which you in reality know very little about beyond seeing it on a TV screen. You can preach all you like about owning a non-Apple MP3 player, but there's a fantastic example of being taken in by a shiny product sitting there next to every one of your posts.

They haven't brainwashed anyone, the simply released the ipod at the perfect time. It was by far the best mp3 player on the market and the segment wasn't really developed. This led to there being a rather large following which means there is by far more support for the ipod than any other mp3 player. This led to a lot more people knowing about Apple which means since they like the ipod they will give other Apple products a chance.

You call it brainwashing, everyone else calls it one of the best marketing moves in history.

Exactly. Apple the technology company aren't geniuses, Apple the marketing company are.

Now that technology is being purchased by more and more less technologically minded people, the technological features of those products are also less important. Apple has turned it's products into celebrities. The iPad is the Justin Bieber of the technology space.

Although highly popular it actually had pretty poor sound quality at the time and modern offerings continue to be outperformed in the audio department today by devices that are half the price (example, Sanza Clip). I get that it was easy to use, look good etc but I find it ironic that the actual audio quality was not all that special.

Seems to be a running theme with Apple, it has the great overall package but most of the technology under the hood is quite un-remarkable. As Casio commented more tech is being bought by non techy people so its all about the 'face value'.

I simply like to use Windows. I've used both Microsoft and Apple OSs since the late nineties, and I can safely say I much prefer Windows. I don't know why, but I like the way Windows has more of an industrial feel to it? That's not the word, but at the very least, XP works similar to how my head works. I know that Macs are designed to be more user friendly, but that friendliness comes at the cost of control, I can completely control how my computer works, but the feeling of control isn't there with a Mac.

Over the summer, I plan on getting Ubuntu or some kind of Linux OS to see if that fits my mind even more, which I believe it might.

As a careful note, I'm irritated that I can't really say what I want here. I'm trying to say something like, a PC is sort of blocky and sectioned with how it works, but a Mac is connected and intuitive with how it works. Still not what I want to say, but that's sort of the general idea.

So change your Windows via RainMeter or Litestep, etc. You have actual options on a PC, where as with OS X you are pretty much stuck with OS X.

I think that's part of it, another part is that I don't like one program communicating to another program without me knowing...

Actually, this makes me seem like an evil dictator. What ever.
