ARCAT Race IV : Seattle Grunge Fest

To the hilly streets of Seattle. And a surprise for this week, we'll have a bonus race! You can't have a festival with one band, right? :sly:

Comments

This would also be known as GT3 License S-2. ;) The bonus race is just that. It was my excuse to include another favorite combo with a classic racecar, without making it count in a big way. You are not required to run it in order to be included in the standings for this week. I will, however, be awarding bonus points that will count toward the overall standings. These will be small amounts, 5 to first, 3 to second, 2 to third, and 1 bonus point to all other participants. If you are in a close battle for the overall series, it may be in your best interest to at least turn in a time for this. Do well, and it could make a difference for you in the standings. 👍👍

Comments on the Main Event Combo

You might be thinking I was rough on you guys with the R2's, but I considered R1's for this event. Yes there is wheel spin coming out of some corners if you are not careful with the throttle, but the understeer was too much for me to be satisfied with when trying to drive it on Mediums or Softs. Give it a rip and I think you'll enjoy. 👍

Also, a steward's note. Thanks for your support of the series so far. We've had some great turnout each week, let's keep this thing running to the finish. :)

WOW - First of all, thanks to all of the loyal racers for hanging around and putting up with my combos. Great turnouts every week, and some really competitive racing from everyone.

Now, on to business.

On the bonus race, congrats to jmgyro for the win , stidriver for second, and MadMax86 for rounding out the podium. 👍

On the Week IV main event, congrats again to jmgyro for the win, stidriver for second, and I managed to somehow pull out another podium.

For the series -

Congrats to jmgyro, for finishing first in every single event in the main series.

Congrats to stidriver for taking second in every single event in the main series.

And congrats to MadMax86 for consistent performance through the series and rounding out the series podium standings. 👍

Some really close racing again, all through the standings. Great job, guys. :D

I hope to see you all over at the BMW cup, and thanks again for showing up to race!!!

EDIT: Got Marooned added to the last race and final results. Sorry to all for the mixup, I'm glad the impact was limited. I just owe a beer each to Jerome and Drew, and I think I can manage that. ;)

Only one of my fav cars OAT in GT, the '69 Race Car. This beast is great all around, fast, eninge sounds great/unique and most importantly handles well on any tires than other cars of the era :) I wil try to run it this weekend.

Double-Smegging Sweet! 👍

I've had a few laps on each, and I must say, you couldn't have dreamed up two combos where the splits mattered less! With the Corvette, you can get a quick T1 with a crap exit if you brake late, and a quick T2 in which you've set yourself up poorly for the second part of the chicane. With the GT40, they've managed to place both splits in braking zones! :dunce: A lightning T1 will again cause you to screw up the rest of the complex, and T2 is ludicrously meaningless - I think I'm on the gas again after braking right about at the split.

As for the cars? Well, I'd always found the C5R to be an understeering pig - although I'm revising my opinion now - but the wheelspin is very tricky. It's hard to predict, hard to stop, and loses you buckets of time both if you light them up or if you try to be cautious on the throttle. And the GT40? Um... it's indescribable! No other car handles like it. It plows on the brakes but turns very well under throttle, and yet you have to drive it to know how different it feels. Those jumps are insane, though; the car much prefers wandering around and hitting the wall over going straight, and it hasn't ever behaved the same way twice for me at the bottom of the hill (when I've made it there! :ouch:).

Sorry about the long rant, don't think it means I don't enjoy them - it just means finding their limits and doing a flawless lap will be extremely difficult. I guess that just means more time spent enjoyably playing GT4! 👍 And by the way, I advise not doing the combos one after another: they each require totally different driving styles.

I won't bother to start off with the splits because they're so irrelevant and I haven't gotten a good lap in either car. From memory I'm using 290 for the 'Vette (and no first or second gear - yet it still wheelspins! - and shift at redline) and 270 for the GT40 (plenty of 2nd gear, shift near limiter).

Only ran the Bonus with the Ford so far.

270 kmh

17.176
56.257

Seen 17.4->55.9 though, probably is more at T1 but it is most efficient for me to do it a little slower. At first the combo is quite annoying, but there's a few different lines that make it a lot easier. Only problem is I messed up the gearing on a couple corners before T2 so I lost a bunch of time.

Yea T2 is worthless, but even if it wasn't generally there's a lot of time difference for people on the ending anyways.

Well, I can tell you that when I set these up, I don't pay much attention to splits. I focus first on the driveability of the car (Which is affected by my driving style and using the wheel) and the total lap times. The lack of meaning on splits should make for some really interesting results, for sure. ;)

I can tell you that for the main event races (Not the Chaparral or GT40), these cars were generally the fastest and best driving for me on the tracks they were used. That was using the same tires and gearing on all 4 cars. From there, I tweaked the tires and HP settings to suit. And in most cases, I found stock HP to be plenty, so I just left it. The only exception was the GT at New York. The Viper is the best all around car of the 4. It probably would have been faster than the Vette or the Camaro at Infineon or Seattle, if I had pushed it. But I knew pretty early that I was going to want to save it for Laguna. The Camaro and Vette, I actually found to be interchangeable. But I went with the Camaro at Infineon for the purpose of the race theme.

On the Corvette at Seattle, I tried 4 compounds. Super-Hard was most enjoyable for me, but I thought there would be too much griping about wheel spin, especially from the controller drivers. Softs, understeer was unbearable for me. Mediums, understeer was present, and believe it or not, the wheel spin is not much different from the hards. I was ready to go with mediums, until I figured that out.

The GT40, if you have not driven it much, to me that's a shame. But I appreciate the classic racecars and understand what they are. RAW power, generally bad brakes, with decent handling in some cases. I find them a challenge and pleasure to drive, but I know they are not everyone's cup of tea. That's why I included them in the series but minimized their impact on the overall results. That way, if someone did not want to drive them, it would not really affect the outcome to a great degree. I also like driving those cars on mediums, but I went with softs to try and curb frustration. I will not use RSS tires in a series I'm running. To me, they are WAY too acradey, and not much of a challenge to drive on. It's all about fast times, but the cars are basically on rails.

So as you can see, I put a lot of thought and effort into this. And I appreciate everyone showing up, giving me their feedback, and having a good time.

I know that all of these combos will not be for everyone, that's impossible. But now you all at least know that I did not pull tires, cars and tracks out of a hat to set this thing up. :dopey:

Yep! My favorite cars are the old ones, and I prefer the less grippy tires, too. The combos have all been fantastic, and each in their own way. It's good to know it's testing and your good decisions, not luck, that made it that way. Nice job. 👍

And again, this race (races?) is going to be a lot of fun, just wild! The cars will just take some learning and the results will be very scrambled compared to the splits. I'm looking forward to driving that GT40 again tonight!

I got my final session in on the bonus race since I wanted to get one over with.

270 kmh

T1 17.042 (16.998)
T2 55.461 (55.195)

Got 1.1s quicker.
There is a bit more, but I always manage to get one part dirty and I got a lot more than I ever anticipated for this combo.

Cool, Thanks!!

Those jumps are insane, though; the car much prefers wandering around and hitting the wall over going straight, and it hasn't ever behaved the same way twice for me at the bottom of the hill (when I've made it there! :ouch:).

By the way, I missed commenting on this.

The pictures in the GT40 are from my test run. The first one is from the first jump, and look at all that air. :D

The second one is from turn M on the track map. (or 4, whichever way you want to look at it). I smoked the tires pretty much all the way around that corner, due to the awkward landing. :dopey:

For what it's worth I found that tapping the brakes before going over the second jump made me much more consistent in landing the car AND on the next turn.

I tried to get some pictures of sparks in the 'vette for Kenny, but could not get anything I was happy with. :grumpy:

Oh, and I'll post my test splits from both cars tonight. 👍

Damn, I had a great lap (17.058, 55.390) going with the GT40 and then tapped the wall in that 🤬 turn M, despite braking - my turn-in was poor. I would need a fair dose of luck to beat that lap. Once I get a clean lap :dopey:, as long as it's within one second of this one, I'll put the splits up. And I've got a reasonable Corvette time, although it still needs some work: 26.660 - 1'04.529.

Edit: 17.249 - 55.548. Under a quarter of a second slower, so it's good for now. But I still feel like the time left on the track measures in the seconds, not tenths... :scared:

I must say, I am having quite a bit of fun with this game lately :dopey:

As I was driving by Qwest Field, I got to thinking of the surroundings. And with this being coffee country, I started wondering how many Starbucks could be found within the confines of our 2.37 mile course.

As it turns out... there's 5 within the course, with another 5 no more than three blocks away.

Anyway, that was my little diversion.

Now back to driving this Vette :sly:

Wow, you're a little crazy. :p Is that your excuse when you can't keep up with jmgyro, stopped for a Latte? :D

Funny how the chicane at T2 on the forward direction goes right through the Seahawks' practice facility now that Quest field has been built. It was the Kingdome you drove past, and believe me, there is no comparison. That place was a dump. :yuck:

Anyhow, have my test splits for both here -

Looks like I have some work to do in the GT40. I just kept my first clean lap in testing, TBH. some late braking points in a few spots, so I have some easy time to make up.

I've added this language to the first post to help maintain my sanity next Tuesday night -

T1. 0'26.398
T2. 1'03.785

Haven't seen a quicker T1 or T2, but I know I lost a few tenths due to wheel spin from T1->T2 and there is probably a way to get a little quicker T2, but I set myself up to do the next corner perfect.

My ending is disappointing though, lost a few tenths off my best, but as soon as I ran the lap my motivation to race any more left so I'm sticking with this.

note on T1: The 2nd corner was done at 87 mph with 85% throttle, barely touched the rumble on the inside. 6~ mph difference there is a few tenths.

Nah, the stops aren't too bad. The baristas are usually quite speedy. But the sloshing makes for less adventurous apex attacks :nervous:

I got a good lap in with the GT40 now, but the end was relatively poor and I braked too late for both hairpins. Nevertheless,

17.005 - 55.126

Then I spent quite a while with the Corvette pushing too hard trying to match jmgyro's crazy splits and only got myself really frustrated. Every good lap I had going ended in a wall tap somewhere - the curbs like to pitch the car into the wall. And the best T2 I got was only a 1'04.3xx... oh, well. At least I've figured out the end section (by restarting way too often). :dopey:

My first Corvette splits for the week, using 300 gearing. I found anything below that to be far too jumpy.

27.473
1'07.896

There's some time just sittin' there... I slowed down a little too much in a few spots to ensure a clean run, so should have plenty of room for some progress.

Will tackle the GT40 later.

Had a crack at the Bonus race tonight, and man is it frustrating!
Seen some great splits wrecked by the unpredictability of coming down the bumps after T2! :grumpy:

GT40
T1 17.637
T2 56.702

Will see how much different the Chevy feels tomorrow.

First splits for the main event.

01GTP 27.963 / 1'06.845

This is a fun combo with some predictable and managable wheel spin. Its a hoot to spin the wheels for the remainder of a short straight after hitting one of those higher rumble strips, though the loss in time is penalizing.

That's why I made it the bonus race, but didn't include the classic cars in the main races that count most toward the standings. It's so tough to have a mistake free run. And I intentionally put the bonus race in the reverse direction. Try driving the 'vette in reverse. If this makes sense, the GT40, with it's engine in the back, nose dives on the second jump. The corvette, with it's engine in the front, has the nose go up in the air on BOTH jumps. If you drive bumper cam like I do, you can't see a thing when going over the jumps in the 'vette.

I think you'll find the 'vette much less manic and much more manageable, I hope. :scared:

first splits for main event are not note worthy but here they are:

28.486
1'08.791

Having a bit of a problem getting my head into racing for some reason.

I have new bonus splits.

Tied with MadMax at T2. :odd:

17.583
56.901

And with the GT40, jmgyro might have other suggestions, but as an average mortal racer, I suggest that tapping the brakes as you land off the second jump is EVEN MORE effective than tapping them before going over it.

AND, if you go in a straight line with your right tires on the center yellow, you might be able to stay off the walls on the way down.

This IS a fun combo to drive. And it's also a frustrating one at it's limit.

Everyone do me a favor and just take a few easy laps around the track without pushing or trying to find the limit. You might see what I mean. ;)

Going back for some main event action now. Also did a little testing for the next series tonight. Appears there is enough interest to run one of the two. 👍

Tough to put a full clean lap together, between controlling the wheelspin and trying to get close, but not too close, to curbs and walls I either end up behind the ghost or ahead and then I barely tap a a wall. Just got to keep trying.

Got you on the board. 👍

If you struggled a little with this one, you're going to despise the GT40. :guilty:

We've run the 'Vette at the Team SMART LAN's some, and the wheel spin was not really an issue on the RH tires. I'm thinking the gearing could be a big part of that, you can't change from default settings in HP, weight or gearing in LAN mode.

I'm going to try changing back to default gears, or something close to it, for my next run. Will set the gears so it redlines in 5th on the backstraight, without having to shift or hitting the limiter.

I was using 350 gearing in testing, and switched to 300 or 290 last night. And the wheel spin was much more of a problem, although I did end up with a much faster lap. :odd:

Will mess with a little and let you guys know what I some up with.

On the Bonus event, I just wish you luck, because that's what you'll need to survive those jumps. I remember that and the first chicane being a real pain on the GT3 license test as well. But I liked it when I was done with it. Go figure.

Don't get me wrong, like many others here I adore the GT40, but those jumps? :yuck: Had a 56.4xx going, right in the middle of the road coming down the hill, wheel dead-straight, and suddenly I'm pitched 90-degrees into the barrier after the landing from the 2nd jump! No readily obvious reason, it just seems to happen from time to time! :grumpy:

Anyway, Rachel is down in LA all weekend, so I should have plenty of time to cobble together a time in the 'Vette which I've not actually touched as yet. :guilty:

Yeah, I know. I was going through the same thing last night. I stole this idea from arora's Tictac series, doing one car forward and one in reverse. Other than the rally cars, there is almost nothing that does well on the downhill jumps. :indiff:

But it's still fun. :dopey:
