Slot 1: For the first time all season I was dumped into Top Split, and the race went about as well as could be expected: Qualified 14th, had absolutely no pace, finished 15th. I was running 16th on the final lap when the alien in 15th place gave up in frustration after having a miserable race, which was the only reason I didn't actually finish last.
Slot 2: In a slightly depleted Top Split, I was having the sloppiest qualifying I've had in a long time, including crashing out of the final corner and giving myself damage, ruining both my current and next flying lap. On my final attempt, I finally managed to not mess up and surprisingly set a qualifying time only a few hundredths slower than my FP time, good enough for 7th on the grid.
Once again in the race, however, I was pretty much hopeless. Not having the car in my garage meant I hadn't done any runs with fuel and tire wear before the actual races. That was also the case in the Rounds 1 and 3 of Nation's that I'd done so far, but for those cars (Civic TC and Porsche 919), it didn't drastically change their handling - it just made them a bit slower. With the Suzuki VGT though, the car feels far more reluctant to turn in, or to lose grip in the rear end. I'd gotten used to sliding the car around in FP, so it was rather difficult to adjust to a car that's more eager to understeer. For the first several laps, I'd lose a spot, then gain it right back as the person who passed me would get taken out or would make a mistake on their own. I eventually fell back to 8th, then got held up as 7th place failed to pull away and was in fact making the same exact mistakes I was. This dropped me down to 9th, with 10th also looking for a way past.
Starting the final lap, I was still in a 4-car battle for 7th place, running in 9th spot, when 7th place ran wide onto the grass at the exit of T5, promoting me back up to 8th as they nearly spun their car. Headed down the back "straight" in Sector 2, I opted to not defend from the car behind in 9th going into the hairpin, which turned out to be a very good call. 9th place went for the move, but out-braked himself and ended up shoving 7th place out of the way, allowing me to inherit the position. After having started the final lap in 9th place, I ended up crossing the line in 7th thanks to 2 very well-timed (for me at least) errors from my competitors. The 257 points was way more than I thought I would end up with given how awful my performance had been, so I called it a night.
