Cars do actually get dirty, especially the Reflex paint on TVR's. The finish on other cars shine less and appear less glossy.

i don't know about aerodynamics but like saleen says, cars definitely get dirty. get an r34 skyline in bayside blue, drive it for about 100 km, then take it to laguna seca, look at the back as soon as it starts a free run) (no reflections) then wash it and compare. it will reflect all the colours of the circuit, really great

I explained this a long time ago in the GT3 forum. Pretty good experiment. Take a black car (new). Drive it for about 100 miles (maybe at the Test track if your lazy). Go to the car wash. Look at the car (especially the windows.) Remember it (close your eyes if you have to) then wash it. It gets shinier...

Mustang Cobra R. Take it too Rally for 5 Seconds Come back and it will be DAMN DIRTY, and then wash it and you WILL see a BIG difference.

Washing the cars is very noticeable on my HDTV set but I think it wasn't done very well in the game. They should have at least made the cars have a little build up of tire rubber and some bug splats like with real race cars.

Let us hope it is either eliminated or fixed for GT4.

the aerodynamic advantages on the clean cars would be very minimal

aerodynamic advantages of a clean car would be very high.

The difference is in the fact that a newly washed car, the surface is slick and glossy and smooth, air slides right off of it, as the car gets dirtier the gloss fades and the surface of the car becomes rough, air does not like to travel over rough materials.

I dont know the order of magnitude it would change, but it would change, and enough to make a difference in a top speed test easily. The slightest change would make a difference over 60 miles per hour.
