Someone told me it was 20. Thought it was. But no panel fell off..

Once you reach that level though, do you have to keep hitting the wall or cars as if the car had a health bar? Or will the severity of the damage depend on how hard the car hit something?

....you must be new here.

THERE IS NO LEVEL DAMAGE UNLOCK, IT'S ALL THERE FROM THE START

Yes, there is

Your door will just fall off after level 20
And before level 20, it's just a very little damage

Come on guy's, not so harsh. Damage becomes more noticeable at around level 20. If you go online you can see the full damage system. I have seen great pics of a citroen rally car which crashed at Daytona and the door was about 50 metres in the air ;). FYI i'm level 31 and GT6 is yet to be delivered ;)

Damage ius the same for all levels. Certain cars have different damage models and thus the damage that happens to these models will appear much more drastically (Doors falling off etc). These cars include Premium Nascar and Rally Cars. These cars are generally unlocked at later levels giving the 'illusion' that 'Advanced' damage is unlocked at later levels when it is actually not.

In short; Damage is the same at all levels, the only difference is that the damage that happens to certain cars, e.g Premium vs Standard is the variable, not your level.

Even Shorter; It's to do with the car, not your level.

This Post contains 0% sarcasm.

I will quote this in an attempt to draw attention to it.
I agree with this, as you get higher level, you get faster cars. Faster cars mean bigger wrecks. If the OP is talking about mechanical damage that affects performance, sorry, there is none in A-spec. Mechanical damage is only available online, in practice, and arcade.

The rest of this thread sadly contains nonconstructive stupidity. Were it at least constructive I wouldn't mind.

I knew about the mechanical damage.

Eh.. Damage is better than no damage I guees. And appearently headlights are indestructible..

Since this is the first inclusion of damage in the GT series, I'd say they did okay.
On some of the standard cars, I've seen better damage models on PS1, no lie.

At what level does damage fully unlock?

Easy, with the endurance bspec races... real damage risk for you PS3 (YLOD) ...:dopey::dopey::dopey:

At what level does damage fully unlock? Level 0.

Tried getting the "Watch out for falling objects" trophy on two account. One was my main, one was my alt that was level 0.

I went to arcade mode, got in the Suzuki SX4 WRC and crashed until any part fell off. Took roughly the same amount of time on both accounts. (Give or take maybe 15 seconds).

WRONG. I tried to smash my car when I was lvl 17 and my doors came off. Plus I received a trophy.
There is no level for damage.

Lock needed I suppose.

damage in this game is weird.

it's physics based, rather than scripted, so no smash up ever looks exactly the same... but it takes entirely too long for the damage to show up. it could be easily fixed, one would think, with an update just by changing a few bits of code...
but once i was on La Sarthe in the 908 fap hdi and slid into a barrier. i hit L1 to get back onto the track, and saw the car reforming itself.

it really seems like Polyphony Digital went to extra lengths to make sure the cars didn't get seriously muffed up. they put damage in just to keep folk from saying "it's 2010, where's the effin damage, PD?"... then made it ridiculous.

i wonder though... in videos (from the 2010 E3 for example) that WRX got all manner of messed up, and from what i read the demo had a shortish time limit. it takes forever in GT5 to get the kind of smashiness that was shown in the videos... kinda like they dumbed it down for the release...

Reforming itself?

I hate the way it's set up. As if cars in real life had a meter that got more damaged the more you crash it. If your crashin at 100mph, the car should have the maximum damage as soon as you hit the barrier. Not having to hit a barrier 150 times to make the bumper fall off.

It's like having the demon and angel on your shoulders. Except one is Forza, the other is GT. And you just want to grab them and mash them together.

I have seen this on a few occasions now. I was on daytona and was purposely crashing into the wall with a nascar while looking behind. Initially the there was quite a big dent but as the above say's it kind of reforms into a smaller one. Maybe they did tone it down a bit.

All who say, damage is the same at all levels, doesn´t say the truth.

In lower levels, you need a lot of time to really get a visible damage. I am now level 27 and damaging my car is a lot easier.

I realised the damage started to be more sensitive at level 20 and higher.

And yes, you often see bigger dents reforming to little ones. I think, it is a fact of the bad deformation of the models and in some situations, it would look rediculious. Sometime it looks like melted plastic in a micro wave oven.

What I noticed is, that PD modeled every part of the car with chassis gaps etc. But the damage system considers the whole car as one part and deforms it in one way and not seperated in parts.

I absolutely hate this. Took my Ferrari 512BB '76 onto a race at Deep Forest and drove around the track the wrong way, trying my best to time it so that I crashed head-on into cars in the middle of the long straight. The collision sounded like two plastic boxes banging together, and the bonnet of my car just looked ever so slightly melted, exactly as you've described there.

It's so disparaging.

I'm level 32. Damage has never changed ever. I've started near a dozen new games using the seasonal event leveling technique. I don't care how good or well I drive, as those accounts are only there to make me more money. Damage is the same at level 0 as it is at level 15 as it is at level 32.

Also, if it is based on level, that's just stupid.

Yepp, same here. But I also have seen cars, where (at least) small damages look really great. Try a Ferrari 430 Scuderia for examples. Smaller damages look really cool. Same with Lamborghine Gallardo or Murcielago.

But the heavier the damage, the worse it looks.

You are right, it looks the same. But the higher your level, the faster your dents and scratches appear, I think.

By "looks the same", I mean everything about damage. After taking many saves from level 0 to level 20 or beyond, I have seen nothing that even suggests to me that damage is level based in any way.

As others have said, you just gain access to cars with better damage models as you level up. Start up a new account, go to arcade and grab the C4 rally car and run it into a wall over and over while timing. Then go do the same on your higher level main account. If you compare the times, and you ran into the wall at roughly the same speeds, it should be very similar.

Race cars have the best damage models, and low level players don't have access to them, so it looks like it unlocks.

It made sense (sorta) to have damage unlock if there was mechanical damage, but there isn't. There would be no reason to ease players into cosmetic damage.

I've noticed the same.

Somewhere after 20 I noticed that just scraping the wall at Indy once was leaving marks and deforming the rear wing.

Yes, in Acrade Mode the damage level is there from point zero. But not in GT-Mode. I tried it withseveral cars and at level 10 or so, I could have crashed into the barrier with a small scratch. But now at level 27, scratches appear at the smallest contact and dents happen faster.

On the exact same car?

This opposes my experience. One of the races I used to start off my new saves were the GT-R seasonal. I'd usually ram the Maserati out of the way on the 1st lap, or scrape the wall on the right hand turn after the hairpin. My GT-R almost always had very noticable deformation of the front left corner. This was at level 0. As I kept going, it got much worse if I didn't drive clean.

Yes, I have a Ferrari 430 Scuderia with over 2000 km on tacho. I bought it when I was able to get it. And I really see the difference.

Of course and as I said....the damage model itself looks the same. But I don´t need to make contact 50 times (with a lower level) to get the damage I get now with a few contacts.

It is really nice to see, that I make contact with a car or wall and have a dent and scratches. It is far away from perfect and the damage really depends on the car . But some cars do it really right.

There was the example with the 512BB, which looks horrible when damages. Like C4-explosive ran against the wall.

But as I said above the post I'm quoting, one hit at level 0 gives you very noticeable damage.

you do not get full damage at level 0 or 20. I have read its level 40. Just go onto youtube and type gt5 damage. u will see the damage that u will recieve at some point. the damage is awful until it gets unlocked. I dont no why all you ppl think its from the start. im level 28 and its appauling

Oh please. The guy who uploaded on november 22nd the original video of heavy damage said he was at level 6 when he recorded it. (I did the same at level 17 and got a trophy for losing a door)

Why would he lie and how could he be at level 40 two days before the release of GT5?
Please stop this nonsense.
