Pictures have been released of the 2008 RS6 Avant, powered by a turbocharged 5.2 litre V10. This upgraded version of the current S6 engine will produce a massive 580 horsepower.

Official details of the car will emerge at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but these pictures show that it will be clean and restrained in the traditional Audi style.

Audi is sticking two exhaust pipes up to the environmental brigade with this, the ridiculously powerful new RS6, revealed here for the first time.

The new RS6 packs a faintly ridiculous 572bhp from the twin-turbo 5.2-litre V10 that's been squeezed beneath its lightweight aluminium bonnet - 145bhp more than its twin-turbocharged 4.2-litre V8 predecessor.

That surfeit of power instantly makes the RS6 to the leader of the muscle-saloon pack; the Mercedes E63 AMG has a mere 503bhp and the BMW M5 a trifling 500bhp. Then again, Audi already produces a 429bhp 5.2-litre V10 S6, so it really needed to ramp up the power for the RS6.

Providing the shove is a tweaked version of Audi’s 90-degree 40-valve 5.2-litre V10 petrol engine with twin turbochargers, air-to-air intercooler and the latest direct injection system.

Max power is developed at 6250pm, with peak torque of 480lb ft (96lb ft up on the M5; 15lb ft up on the E63) arriving at just 1500rpm.

Audi says that the RS6 will leap from 0-62mph in 4.6sec – faster than the M5, and as quick as the E63. The difference, however, is that the Audi is likely to be able to manage that performance whatever the weather, thanks to standard quattro four-wheel drive.

As in the first-generation RS6, drive is fed through a six-speed automatic gearbox with steering wheel mounted shift paddles. This time, however, the beefed-up Torsen differential based arrangement doles out 60 per cent of the power to the rear and 40 to the front, to provide what Audi describes as improved levels of traction and more rear biased handling.

There's also a reworked suspension, with the same four-link arrangement up front and multi-links at the rear as the S6, but with radically altered elasto-kinematic properties to take advantage of the increased power being put through the rear wheels. Also standard is Dynamic Ride Control, a mechanical system that alters damping during cornering to counteract roll and pitch.

The looks aren't quite as pumped up as the performance: for a car that packs over a hundred horsepower more than a Porsche 911 Turbo, we think it's rather subtle.

Up front there's a more heavily profiled front bumper with larger cooling ducts, a revised grille with brushed aluminium frame, and the now-obligatory-for-Audi LED daytime running lights.

Along the flanks, the RS6 flexes its biceps, with massively bulging blistered wheelarches that recall the original Quattro. Wheels are 19-inchers as standard, shod with 255/40 tyres, but 20-inchers with 275/35 rubber are optional.

At the rear is a pair of chromed oval tailpipes, set within a rear bumper that has a full-width diffuser for high-speed stability. There's also a subtle spoiler.

We've only got photos of the estate so far, but Audi will be building a saloon as well, giving the RS6 the potential to squash not just its German rivals, but also the forthcoming new Jaguar XF-R.

The RS6 arrives in the UK in April 2008, when it's expected to cost around £70k. Just don’t ask about the CO2 emissions.

i really really really want one :D

This will make 650Bhp with a chip...

Very very nice and blue indeed !...

Oh good lord.

The power struggle is getting out of hand.
What's the betting that Merc nab the idea of a quad-turbo W16 for the next AMG E-Class?

You say that like it's a bad thing :-)

So when they say that the 'big end' has gone....

I wonder why it doesnt have 1000nm of torque. Probably gearbox difficulties I suspect!

Good grief! The license plate should read, "You just got beat by my mom's station wagon".

That's awesome!

Words fail me. This is the coolest thing I think I've ever seen. An estate...with 580bhp...you have got to be ****ting me. I could only imagine the time this thing will set on the 'ring.

Images of Audi’s new super-wagon has appeared ahead of the car’s unveiling at next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show. According to the guys over at Jalopnik, the new RS6 will be sporting a V10 engine with FSI technology and two turbos bolted on.
We recently reported that leaked vehicle chassis codes for the new Audi RS6 specced the output from its twin-turbo V10 engine at 571hp (426kW). However, new information from a source at Audi has put this figure in doubt. The reliable source claims that the 571hp will only be the specified figure Audi will market the car with. True output will be upwards of 600hp, with 610hp (455kW) pegged as the most likely figure.
It looks like Audi is taking no chances with the ultimate “wolf in sheep’s clothing” model and even BMW’s excellent V10 motor will struggle to compete with this kind of power output.

I wonder if that car could have my babies? We've already established that it has female anatomy.

 *jaw drops on the floor*
That is one SICK WAGON!!!!!! Wouldn't mind having one of those. I could just see how this is going to be:

Imagine you and you're family are at a traffic stop, then suddenly these two jokers in their Ferrari came beside you and dare you to race. When the light turns green and you drop the clutch and......in a matter of gear shifts, the Ferrari as slowly falling behind and before you know it, its gone!

All that in a station wagon is just unheard of till now. If this is just the RS6, wait till the RS4 comes out :trouble:

.........

I hope it has the rear facing third seat. That way, the kids can wave at the sorry Ferrari Driver as the RS6 blasts by.

its an auto.....

RS4 has just went out of production.....

Crap! So much for smoking that Ferrari..... and so much for a RS4. I just totally lost respect for Audi now, well for dropping the RS4 that is. The R8 and the future Audi Coupe (forgot the name and its not a TT) are on par with the other cars within its class. Well at least your wife won't be complaining about driving a manual again....

Not unheard of, see what Porsche is doing with their wagon and their 500hp option.

Mmmm, its alright. I'm very much impartial to Mercedes these days when it comes to the hi-po sedans and wagons, and while this seems up to the task, I'd rather have my balls-to-the-proverbial-wall E63 Wagon.

What an amazing car. This think looks amazing. I'm sure it will go even better. I just can't get over hwo amazing this thing looks. I'm speechless.

The last car I fell this much in love with at first sight was the M5. Now time to talk to the parents...

And those brakes are H-U-G-E!!!!

A manual RS6 is coming (DSG/S-Tronic)
And the RS4 is still available in Avant and Cabriolet form for now.

RS5 will be here in a year or two so it in essence the RS4 wont be away for too long!

Mercedes is lacking surprises in my opinion. They just recycle the formula over and over again with their AMG line. Audi may not be considered as a top premium brand like Merc and BMW by some people, but their RS models are simply attractive and mean looking. Look at those figure just make me want this baby so bad

Autobox or not this is a stellar car--and should give Ferrari a run for its money on a track as well as in a straight line. And I don't care what Porsche has in store, it won't even come CLOSE to looking as good as this RS6 advant.
