Audi's stand at the Tokyo show made room for two world premieres - the Shooting Brake concept (did anyone say TT?) and this, the 450bhp S8.

It uses a modified version of the V10 engine used in Lamborghini's Gallardo, which serves up 398lb ft torque from 5.2 litres. This means a 0-60mph time of 5.1 seconds and an electronically governed top speed of 155mph.

Chassis and drivetrain have also been upgraded - the new car uses Audi latest-generation Quattro four-wheel-drive system with active torque distribution to divide the power between each corner according to grip.

The car's adaptive air suspension has been modified to deliver firmer settings, and the steering has also been upgraded.

The S8 will appear in showrooms in the middle of next year.

This the S-class and the 7 series are really competitive. If I had to buy one I wouldnt be able to choose inbetween them but if I really had to it would probably be the merc for the badge and when price is no option mercedes are the best. The audi would come second.

Screw the Audi. Screw the BMW and the Merc too.

I would get this premium German sedan

Crap, they don't make those anymore...

BMW/Audi reached close to perfect styling, so they had nowhere to go but down I guess...

750iL's are great until someone drives it hard before you get it and thrashes that glorious engine.

The 740iL and 740i (my choice, I like the shorter body) tend to hold up a little better to hamfooted American drivers, for some reason.

I'd like to get my girlfriend a 740i to haul the kids around in, it will look nice and stylish for decades to come.

450 hp and 398 lb. ft. doesn't seem to impressive out of a V10 engine. Plus that car is going to be freakin heavy. I'll stick with a Caddy STS-V if I want a sedan that fast as hell.

Doesnt seem too bad to me, I would want some more but remember its naturally aspirated 5.2 litre.

Looks about as dull as all the other Audi's in my humble opinion.

Respectable performance though and I'm sure it's comfortable. 👍

Dull as in pure classyness. I think audi right now is the manufacturer to go with if your in your 40's and over have loads of money and what a classy lokking nothing spaceship like car. Basically every tory should have one of them.

Looks so much better like this...

Either way, it's still better looking than the actual S Class and 7 series IMO.

And it looks great inside, one of my all time favorites:

I like the car but I wouldn't have it in that coulour, that silver makes it look dull, it's got no sheen to it. You need a darker metalic colour on that imo.

I don't get it. The W12 makes the same hp and a little bit more torque than that. 0 - 60 time for the W12 is 5.0 seconds, and I guess it's also limited to 155mph top speed.

In my humble opinion-
1)This is great, but the A8 6.0 W12 is just as fast and readily available.
2) It's not quiet enough for an incognito autobahn cruiser, but not garish enough to attract wanted attention.
3) The new Mercedes S Class will probably wipe the floor with everyone, and I suspect BMW and Audi will run to the hills with price cuts.
4) I think the BMW 7 Series is ugly, and the previous version slightly less so. But still ugly.

yeah the latest s class will wipe floors indeed it looks liek a mini maybach its absolutely brilliant. I suspect a audi s8 will be about 10 grand cheaper than a equivelant s class.

Looks alright for a new car, certaintly better than the new BMWs. Still not convinced about the grill though and yeah gun metal would be a far nicer colour :)

Except for the grill, I like the S8.

If only BMW made a M7...

Ya gotta respect a sporty car that weighs a billion gajillion pounds/kilograms. 👍

The A8 is actually fairly light (for a large luxo car) because of its alloy body.

The new S-class has already been tested by EVO mag who thought its handling was 'dead' feeling.

That Audi is the ****

I agree. That Audi with that W12 motor is just plain sexy. I love it--Audis to me all have class...even the cheaper ones.

I personaly love the grill.
And the whole car for that matter.

But any word on transmission? I doubt it'll be a manny but will it be DSG or not?

I may be a little biased, being a Merc owner and all, but the upcoming S63 AMG will eat that thing's lunch, though I do prefer the Audi's looks by far. And you won't be able to take the Benz on a ski trip very easily. But still, on dry pavement, the Benz should spank it, Lambo mill and all. :D

It's possible...
The S65 engine produces more than 600, but whether the 6.3 can do it is something I'd like to know...
