Today will be my first day doing manual... Wish me luck!

best thing you can do is start with the lower powered cars on a simple circuit like Top Gear, and just get used to listening to the sound of the engine at its peak as a sign of when to upshift. As you get used to it, choose a car with a little bit more power and go again :)

You will soon get the hang of it, and wonder why you didnt make the change ages ago!!

Good luck!

I love using manuel transmission in GT5, it makes driving way funner for some reason. :D

"Ok missa fawlty, I change gear for you now! I learn it from a book."

(Couldn't help myself, lol)

I can't do analogue. I'm dpad + x square and manual gears. Started years ago the same but auto, changed to manual to better control slides and best thing I ever did, learning manual doesn't take that long and helps a lot with consistancey and sense of speed.

i play with auto - using the dpad and not using any analogue sticks.

i'm faster than everyone who has posted in this thread.

Thats definatly a lie if you use the d pad to steer?

Manual. L2 brake, R2 accelerate, right stick up shift up, right stick down shift down.

And I also mapped the X, Square, Triangle and Circle buttons for miscellanea.

My right thumb is actually quite busy between heavy braking,e-brake, accelerating...etc. I give you credit for using square and circle for shifting. I'd never be able to pull that off.

I picked that up after I went from the PS2 to the 360. I decided to use the triggers for gas/brakes as it seemed a good idea, left analogue for steering which left either right analogue or one of the four buttons for shifting. I think one game had it defaulted to X and B so I went with that and got used to it. Tried using the right analogue, never felt right.

So when I got a PS3 I just pretty much kept the same layout as the 360, although it took a while to get comfortable with the smaller controller and poorer triggers.

Auto on circuit racing, manual on drag racing.

Lol.. I'd do it the other way around. It's way more advantageous to have manual shifting on circuit tracks.

For drag racing, there's no reason to even downshift.. it's just upshifting. Let the car do the work for you.

The first part is not a lie, but the second could be.

Haha thanks for clarifying. It would be oversteer city with the d pad

That's assuming using the D-pad to steer makes you slower which I won't subscribe to, not saying I'm faster, or even just as fast sometimes, using it but that has more to do with my talent in general (which means I'm not the fastest player around by some margin) than with my ability to steer using the directional buttons.
I have beaten people using a steering wheel online with me basically pressing buttons in quick succession but it's fair to mention I probably lost a lot more.
Although that also would've happened if I used the analog sticks to steer.
And you can be smooth using directional buttons, it's not simply pressing left to steer left and right to steer right but a more complicated sequence performed almost subconsciously, if I'd have to think about what buttons to press all the time I would be lost completely.

Ok,im going to try this d-pad steering tonight

I use DS3 and I use only manual. My L2-R2 buttons are for shifting and my right analog stick is gas/brake.

Manual is faster for me. Left analog: steer, Right analog: down for reverse, left/right look left right, R2 accelerate, L2 brake, L1 turn ghost on/off, X downshift, Triangle upshift, O park brake. Square access R/A menu, D-pad scroll up/down/left/ right in R/A menu. L3 wipers, R1 flash to pass, R3 hi/low beam.

R/A menu access is easy this way: shift up, 1,2,3, maybe 4, then as the car is accelerating on a straight, my thumbs are free to make on the fly adjustments.

I use manual.

L2 is brake
R2 is gas
X is shift up
Square is shift down
Left stick steers

I think this gives you more throttle control in turns, to me it's much easier to push R2 halfway down than to push X halfway down

Wasn't trying to promote it or anything, you should just use whichever layout or combination of buttons and sticks you feel comfortable with.
For me it's the classic PS-One layout apparantly, just never got to grips with using analog sticks for steering, that's in GT-games mind you, for some strange reason I'm having no trouble whatsoever using it in other (perhaps more arcadey) driving games.
Or maybe I'm just odd...

^Yea the D-pad is actually easier for me then the left analog stick for steering as I can be quicker on counter steering, but I do use the left analog stick when there are longer turns that need only a slight turn in wheel angle. Kinda mix it up.

I use a steering wheeling. Just the d pad steering didnt add up in my mind, thats why im going give it go

Wow just raced for about 3 hours with manual mapped to the right stick, wow I love it. Took the Ruf to the ring for some drifting!👍

My configuration aswell, a problem with GT5's auto shifting (when i tried it first
briefly:))is that in 1st gear corners some times the game wont shift down to first gear, so you end up coasting through the turn in second gear.

I agree with the triggers for accelerating and braking aswell, gives you way more control and pricision imo.👍

I can only use automatic, I have horrible timing so I can't do manual, I even mapped my controller so that I don't even have any shifting buttons.

I too use manual.

R2/L2 for throttle/brake
Left stick for steering
Right stick for shifting

I use L2/R2 for braking and acceleration.

Left stick for steering.

Right stick for shifting. (Right stick up - shift up, right stick down - shift down)

I have to use manual for drifting, and when I am lazy to shift with fast cars (e.g. money grinding), I use automatic. Regardless, when I am aiming for the best time, it's manual.

I tried the L1 R1 for shifting and it just felt too awkward, the X square combo looks like it might work a little better. I'll give this a try and see how it feels.

I cannot use manual with a controller at all. With a wheel, it feels natural. Don't even have to think about it.

What I wish PD would do is allow for a quasi automatic. If I want to up or downshift when I want to, then it should let me. The downshifting in automatic can be a bit 'off' at times.

I also prefer the right stick for throttle & brake. It's more precise than L2/R2, even with Real Triggers. Sticks have more throw.

I use r2 for acceleration l2 for brake r1 for handbrake left stick for turning right stick for shifting so pretty much gta style. I find using the controller mapped like this easy for drifting and racing, more comfortable doing drags as well

Has to be automatic, I only have DS3 and I just end up confusing myself trying to shift on it. I played with my friends Gxx whatever it was called and I did fine with manual on that but I just mess up my laps and rarely get a average lap time for me when compared to using automatic.

I use manual and have my controller mapped so that R2 is accelerate, L2 is brake, Left stick is turning, X is handrake, R1 is upshift while L1is down shift. I dont know if i could get used to shifting with the right stick but im going to give it a go jut out of sheer curiosity.

How can shifting with the right stick be faster than by pressing a button?
I don't think that's an efficient setup.
