Automatic or Manual?

Hey everyone i was wondering when you guys go out and drift do you like to drift with auto or manuel, me personally i drift with manuel its better for me i find it kind of weird with a auto cause i still hit the L2 and R2 buttons on accident

so share if you wish

Depends on the car. Alot of the time while drifting, you can get the car to handle like a manual by simply working the gas n brake.

Manual - I can't be 100% when I say this, but I'll say it anyways--ALL the best drifters use manual. Manual gives you a level of control that can't be achieved with automatic transmission.

I can best explain this in examples:
You're in mid drift, your engine is revving far too high for you to maintain a controlled slide, you want the torque, but not the RPM. What do you do?--Shift Up. I know that most gears won't offer as much torque in a low RPM as the previous gear's hig RPM range, but shifting up in this situation will save your drift, whereas if you let off the throttle, or lowered the amount of input, the car would simply slow down and stop because the tires stop spinning as fast, which means more friction.

Think of the back wheels in a drift as if they are hydroplaning.

Say you are coming into the corner, at a low speed, medium RPM, currently, you have only two options for the drift entry if you're in an auto- Feint, and brake (and all variations I'm not counting), if you in a manual, you can use a number of other techniques-all using the downshift pre-entry method. My preferred style goes like this: come in medium speed, double feint, at the moment of the last feint the suspension will "bounce" you into breaking traction- this is the point at which you downshift and punch the throttle (ok, maybe not punch, but apply).

PM me for more questions,

Hehe lol @burnout060:lol:
I always use manual, just a became a habit, otherwise it feels as if your drifting with 2 person, the game shifting for you, and me drifting:irked: I don't like it to use auto......

This is just me and yeah, as some can tell you, this has been brought up more than once, though I feel one should just go manual. no question, it gives better control over your revs and speed. Yes it's harder, but in due time one get's used to it. Regardless of any game be it arcade ish (I.E. Ridge Racer,NFS, Segal Rally, etc) or Sim (like GT4, or GTR, or LFS or RBR, etc).

It will take an obvious ammount of effort but it's worth the commintment, turst somebody that's been doing it in games for nearly 10 years if not over that.

Could go on and on but...

Till later.

Who is Manuel?

Burnout! You beat me to it! :ouch: I didn't even notice that it was spelled wrong last night! :dopey:

i use auto, but i hold R2 to stay in the gear i like if i need to.

I always found it harder to hold that button then to just tap R1 or L1once to get into the desired gear.

What game are you playin' Swift? You shift with L2 & R2 in the GT games.

I'm not going to use smileys to express my sarcasm,

Haha, I noticed it right away.

But seriously, manual all the way. I can understand people using auto with the DS2, keeping the revs up and what-have-you, but once you've been drifting for at least a month or so you should definitely switch over to manual. Once you get used to it you don't even think about it, and you get a lot more control over the car.

TRi
i use auto, i use the ds2. whenever i get a dfp i will do manual, but until then i'm just fine.

Wow, never would have guessed. Maybe the auto in GT4 isn't as bad as I thought. I've seen all of your videos and I can safely say you're a far better drifter than I am.

wow tri you use auto from your vids i would'nt think so you sick dude, hmm..... but i got to stick with manual(happy now burnout lol) i feel more comfortable

IMO auto tranny is lame. It's the slackers version of transmission. If you want complete control over your car, auto is not the way (and neither is "Auto-Manual"), its the clutch that manual has that gives you so much control.

thats why i like that d1 gp game it gives you a cluth button to press, for ya clutch kicks and things like that pretty cool, i wonder if they would give us something like that in gt5

Yep, no substitute for driving a manual transmission, rear wheel drive car in real life. Best feeling... EVER. If I could do one thing for the rest of my life I'd say "to hell with sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll" and I would drift my life away. The feeling I get when drifting my S14 is unlike anything else, and I wouldn't trade it for the best orgasm in the world. 👍

Hey guys I just got in to trying to drift.... I fail to atempt to always get my mazda rx7 infi to go into that proper angle I need I just slide in the direction I was coming in. I read the thread on how to do it... LOL I suck. Anyways. I didn't say that you need to use a manual style to race...(sorry if I misread about that.) Well. I tried it in both....I still fail...manual seems to make my car slide to where I want it to... but its darn hard for me to drive manual....It bothers me alot. I am useing the dual shock controller too...I might get a Driving Force pro later after x-mas to see if I can learn with that...(I like arcade style =] ). So yea...sorry for going offtopic. Do I have to race in manual or is it to my choice?

Thank you...

Erich

Sorry If I posted this in the wrong place.

It's all in ur choice use whatever feels right ,but its gonna be better with manual because of accurate gear selection for each turn :)

First off, hello and welcome to GTP, hope you enjoy your stay.

Second off from what I can tell, this actually should be in the drifting section of GT4.

Thridly, a thread like this I'm sure has been said several times. The serach button is your friend.

and finally, IMHO, it's biased for me to say this... but use manual. No question about it.

It's argueable somehow about it being either harder on a controller or wheel. It's all a matter of just taking the time to get used to it. I suggest a controller first, then if and when you get a DFP, idealy all the time you've spent to master maunal on the controller, should be able to either the paddle or sequental shifter, both on the DFP fine (I use the sequental shiftr a lot of the time anyway), or at least in due time.

It takes a while to get used to manual, but the only way to master it, is to keep using it, and using it, and using it. You have to keep into account yes engine revs, your actual speed, just how much your rpm decreases or increases in upshifts or downshifts respecitvely for each car, it does seam like a lot. But for a guy used to this since... well before I could legally drive, to put it fainlty, it should not be hard forever.

My two cents anyway, till later.

Edit: corection to uh...2nd becuase someone did move the thread into drifting, which mod that did that, thank you. Um, that's it for me.

I use manual, getting the right gear for a turn is a must. Also, it's been proven people that drive manual cars are more alert and better drivers (more concentration to do it). Practice a lot, eventually you won't even have to look at your rpm's, you can do it by sound and keep your eyes on the track.

It's all your preference. Sometimes I drive manual, sometimes automatic.

I don't think that manual drivers are necessarily more alert and better drivers like coolgeekz said. IMHO, driving manual won't make you a better driver.

Drive with what you're comfortable with and keep practicing and you'll get the hang of it!

P.S- I believe there was a thread on this topic. Use the search function please.

auto vs manual

for drifting, I think manual has a clear advantage - allowing you to drop a gear to generate wheelspin seemingly at will, or to keep the car at its optimum torque range.

...I suppose you can do the R2 trick... but that requires more focus than just adjusting to driving manual, imo
