Hi, there is a testtrack, but i dont know if it does what id like for all tracks.
I thought of the crew that is in a raceteam and all the computers that they bring along so they can analyze the car as it runs and do adjustments for each track.
They can see where the driver brakes late, where he looses traction and so on and so on...

Now id like that in GT5 (or 6) to be implemented. After a race on whatever track you want with what ever car you like the so called crew would set up a setting sheet according to your driving style. Especially for the ones that dont know or dont have all the time in the world to setup cars would be great to have a crew that does so.
Of course, those who are really pros may adjust some things anyway but for most part i think this would help many to learn and get better times.
Id love it and would welcome this, its how it is done in real world so why not here?

EDIT: 2/4 2012...

After reading through posts it seems there are more people that like autotuning. But there are different suggestions to this and i like some of them more than others :)

1: Autotunig crew, gives suggestions depending on how you drive
2: Kaz tuned cars: Perhaps buyable via online dealership best tuned cars for the seasonal event tracks. Would be nice addition
3: Shared tunes perhaps available on toplist ingame. THe ones that have best times, their tunes can be available for all to see?
4: Better explenations and ingame tutorials (like licensetests) so all can learn what different settings do

Missed something?

I've been bugging Kaz on Twitter, long before GT5 released, to have a "crew chief" to make those adjustments. Not everyone can tune a car so it performs well.

I'm the driver, not the suspension specialist!

Having an optimized "Gran Turismo" or "Tuned by Kaz" setup would be nice too.

That is my point too, as a driver you know what you want the car to do but not how to make it do that. The crews job is to fix that.

Nice idea. It would definitely add to the realism. Although many of us do enjoy tuning and setting cars up ourselves, I would love to see this feature included.

Even a simplified tuning system as an option like other games have would be welcomed. Slider bars to add understeer or oversteer, short course, long course, smooth or rough, rain, snow, dirt, etc. it would make the game more enjoyable for a lot of people.

There is no "right" setup.

Great idea Mulan, are you a guy or a girl? :sly:

JK, JK :)

And stalker Dave, your "Tuned by Kaz" idea reminds me of those "Tuned by Gran Turismo" cars from GT5: Prologue.

I like the idea, it would be great also if we could share/trade tunes.

I think the an optimized Kaz tune could kill tuning. For me, I enjoy trying stuff out and struggling to tame some of these beasts; its the essence of the GT series.

Good luck finding an algorithm that will optimize car setups for 1000+ cars in every possible parts configuration on 70+ tracks in different track conditions for each and every driver out there. And how would that tool predict how you can cope with a setup change?

And even if it were possible, you know exactly what will happen. People will use that optimizing tool just as they are "maxing out" the cars. And then they moan, if a stage 2 turbo is actually producing better lap times than a stage 3 turbo sometimes.

If you don't want to tune cars, then don't. Nobody forces you to, and there's enough people posting very nice tunes in this very forum.

Nobody needs an instant gratification button.

Yeah, but it would be nice to be able to select from a list of terms that describe how the car is driving and have the virtual crew chief suggest suspension corrections.

I guess that's what online is for. I know not everybody wants to play online, but it really is impossible to program something that can take qualitative input from the player and produce quantitative "gain" on the track, accounting for every person's driving style.

You should be able to submit a setup for "corrections" to an online database, with a description of what's "wrong" (i.e. understeer in slow turns on Nurb GP, for example) and then other players can submit new setups for you to try. Perhaps the "winning" setup gets a monetary reward of some sort.

I think this is a great idea. I have never really understood the tuning all the way from the classic gt games- much to my dismay might I add! I just don't have the technical knowledge or time to figure it out.

Obviously the autotunes would never be the same as people's personal set ups and preferences but it would really help me

Well seems like more guys (as i am a guy too :)) need easier way to get better tunes. Not always easy to find a tune online that fits the car you have and on the exactly same specs as you have modified you car. If its hard to get a autotune perhaps a slider can help as described. For me it would make the game more fun and id save lots of time.

Good idea it would be a nice option to have

That's completely different. Same thing with Photo Stream (http://www.gran-turismo.com/hk/gt5/photo/) and the Photo Mode section on GTP.

An algorithm isn't needed. If Kaz would consider implementing this, he'd have people personally do them.

I don't think this should be a priority (not one of mine), but I do think it'll be useful for a lot of people and I'd use it because it's there. If they added this for GT5, I don't think there'd be any chance for more Tuning options through an update.

If you think about it, the cars in license tests must have some sort of tune under them. I have wished many a time that brand new car I just bought handled like the one in a license test.

NASCAR 09 had a setup sharing feature. Although it was for specific tracks, as the cars are supposed to be nearly "spec". In our case, it would be for the car. NTG2011 was supposed to have a setup sharing feature and a "vote for the best setup online" thing. Neither was implemented.

I think it would save PD time and potential criticism if they let us share our tunes on gt5. That way we could get more variety because lots of people would share tunes, we could rate them to see which are best and so on

I think that would add a lot to gt5!

LFS has the same, actually in-race more-or-less. I was messing about in a drag race once and having my butt handed to me, but one guy shared his setup and the races were much closer then (I even started winning). It was more fun for everyone; the setup itself was fairly wild, and I'd never have happened upon it myself.

That would be great. I'd be concerned with the amount of time wasted trying to rate a tune. A lot of them would most likely turn out to be bad tunes. It's a good idea though. I wonder how it would be implemented if it comes in an update.

Tuning is really simple in GT. always has been, and that's a good thing for me as I don't have to mess around much.

it's no big deal looking up the basics on the Internet and set up a car accordingly in GT. Besides its a good way of learning the basics of suspension setups and some physics on the way.

Scaff has a good tuning guide in the GT4 section of GTP suitable for anyone. No excuses - look it up.

Besides tuning is the last step in getting faster. Knowledge of driving technique is key. And fun.

I agree, but it's one of those things that if it isn't within reach of people, then they won't bother. With the Photo Stream, I think that was a good idea, because I can only guess how many people don't look up GT5 user pics on forums, or anywhere else, besides on their PS3. Now that there's a section/link dedicated to that, it probably drew a lot of people in. I'd say it's the same issue as it is with Tuning setups.

Not quite. As I understand it there should be a "go faster button". There already is, and it's called SRF. No offence, again I like the simplicity of tuning in GT as it doesn't get in the way of driving. But making it any simpler would be bolting go faster bits on a car and it goes faster without any effort from the player. Nothing wrong with that, but how does it fit in the context of gt? I think not at all.

So I'd like to encourage everyone to get a bit of knowledge. It's fun, you can impress nerdy people at the petrol pump and the game is much more rewarding.

It would remove a large portion of fun out of the game for many people here. I'm no tuner either, but I do think it's good to see many different tuners competing with alternative tunes.

Having an optimized "Gran Turismo" or "Tuned by Kaz" setup would be nice too.

Now that would be cool. 👍

It would be nice to receive cars specifically tuned by Kaz (or the PD crew) as rewards for special events (like the licences).

How many of you have done any real racing? Karts, R/C cars, etc. Did you have a crew chief? No right. I know when I was in the R/C off-road thing big I had to learn it all motors, suspension, tires, the works. My dad had no clue so wasn't able to help with much more then putting the car on the track. Now you only get them fancy pit crews when you get up in the ranks. This is a game that is meant to be played with and in that are things like learning set-up. If this isn't your strong point maybe you should pick a book up and read. I know it a lost course but it may help. Not only would they have too progam the game for the 1000+ cars, 70 + tracks, and course maker tracks but also different driver types. Not going too happen.
Rant over.

Um Snake, when is the last time you compared 10 different cars' setups? They were ALL different. I HIGHLY doubt Kaz tells the setup programmers "just use a bunch of random values, let the gamers sort it out".

So, yeah, mmhmm.

This could be good. It can have an option if you want your car's setup to automatically be handled by the CPU after you run some test laps somewhere based on how you handle the car.

The thing is, it wouldn't dumb down the "already simple" tuning.

For the people who don't like that option, it wouldn't be mandatory, so you won't have to use it.

But for those who like to tune them selves noone is taking that part away.
And i think B spec should be that game for tuners where you can act as a tuning boss and see the results since B spec can be more "realistic" in form of AI playing against it self and only difference is how good tuning you have done. You can race in online B spec competition with same AI but different tuning to see what happens. Like fotbollmanager...
Anyway, i would still like a suggestion of tuning proposed by my crew depending on track and car. Today i have same tune for all tracks except gearratio. Don't think thats the way it should be. Id play more tracks too if i didn't need to spend hours and hours just to tune one car.

For those seeking simplicity, see NFS Shift's "Basic tuning"; it basically has several simple values, like:
Top Speed/Acceleration(Gearing)
Oversteer/Understeer(Suspension+LSD)
Top Speed/Grip(Downforce)
And Steering Sensitivity (Steering Rack, only in NFS).

There was also an "Advanced Tuning" option where you could go quite in depth with your setup, much like GT5's, albeit more complicated, and with less obvious results.

I believe that a setting as said above would ruin Tuners here on GTP, though...
