Automatic Tuning?

For those seeking simplicity, see NFS Shift's "Basic tuning"; it basically has several simple values, like:
Top Speed/Acceleration(Gearing)
Oversteer/Understeer(Suspension+LSD)
Top Speed/Grip(Downforce)
And Steering Sensitivity (Steering Rack, only in NFS).

There was also an "Advanced Tuning" option where you could go quite in depth with your setup, much like GT5's, albeit more complicated, and with less obvious results.

I believe that a setting as said above would ruin Tuners here on GTP, though...

I guess I'll ask the question. Why would it ruin tuners? I mean you don't have to make something like this mandatory. It would be completely optional to the driver. You and I may not use the "Automatic tuning" but someone else would.

You got a point I love having options it just like you can choose to race with assists or without assists

Options are the best :). A reason people don't want them to do this would be for PD to concentrate on GT6. I'm with this idea though. I'd like to see it come to GT5.

Good suggestion. Some people like to drive and not to spend time on setups and learning about suspension etc. so they would feel like they know something
kids it is just a game, you aint a real race car driver

that is why there should be an option for complex setup and for simple setup for people who only want to drive
peace

I'm glad I could raise a good point. Emman1984 said exactly what I told a friend about it earlier this morning, it would be like racing with or without assists. Some people do it, and some people don't. It's a matter of preference.

They can see where the driver brakes late, where he looses traction and so on and so on...

There was an analyzer in GT3, and in GT4 I think.
But you only start using it when you need the last couple tenths.
And thats after doing 100+ laps.
Nobody really used it...

I think it'd be better if the crew would suggest things to you. Say after you do a few laps, the analyzer does it's job and then a crew member says something like "You look to be getting a lot of turn in problems, do you want to increase the camber (I know nothing about tuning, so this suggestion is probably wrong). Or there could also be a chart, like you click on what problem you have and then choose different routes from there on. I'm not saying tuning should be overly simplified, but it would be nice to had it for those (read as me) who know nothing about tuning.

Different people with different driving style. There is no right or wrong set up.

It can have an option if you want your car's setup to automatically be handled by the CPU after you run some test laps somewhere based on how you handle the car.

That's why I said they would give you a setup for your car based on how you drive/handle the car.

When you're given an easy option such as auto-tuning, you will probably take it, even if it spoils the gameplay. Same as auto-upgrade and rewind in forza, because they're there it seems like a waste of time doing it yourself.

A better idea would to go further with "special events" which aim to educate you at different things. Say there's an events where everyone is given the same car and you're educated on how to tune it as you go through the series.

I believe that, if this "Automatic Tuning" proves to be faster than what home-grown tuning can produce, people would either try to find SOMETHING to surpass the auto setup, or just use the Auto themselves.

Id play more tracks too if i didn't need to spend hours and hours just to tune one car.

In offline GT gameplay, there's no need to extensively setup a car at all. Even the Expert Seasonal was doable with minimal tuning.

I encourage you to view tuning from a different angle. The first step is to know where on a track you lose time. The second is why you lose time.

Step one requires intimate knowledge of the track. And some proper basic driving technique. If you can put in lap times in a stock car down to a tenth of a second for several laps in a row, then you're "done" with step one.

Step two is a bit more technical as you have to worry about corner entry vs. corner exit speeds, corner entry understeer vs corner exit oversteer, and all those little trade offs. Once you're done with step two, you simply have to read up how to get the desired effect and a bit of trial and error. The hard work is not getting the setup but figuring out the track. But in turn you would have become a much better racer who knows every inch of any given racetrack.

And there's no easy way of doing this.

A friend and myself race just about the same, and I could try one of my setups against an "Automatic setup" to see how it would compare; and if the automatic one beats mine, it would compel me to see if I can improve my setup.

So saying that, couldn't an "Automatic setup" help tuners to try to improve theirs?

Also, an "Automatic Setup" wouldn't make that driver that much better. The driver would still have to.. actually drive and win..

It would only help if the "Automatic setup" wasn't the absolute best; if they make the Auto setup too refined (although unlikely if implemented) tuners would struggle to compete or refine their setups to match and exceed the "Auto setup".

Although now that I think about it, the Auto setup would be more for setups towards characteristics rather than optimized dynamics.

I've been following the thread and decided to add my two cents.
I have a tuning garage here on GTPlanet and think that PD could implement things that would make the game better for everyone.
My first recommendation would be to have the tuneable parts not be so generic when added to a car. By this I mean instead of the adjustable LSD always come with a generic setting of 10/40/20 have the setting more in line with what that car would need. As it is anyone installing an adjustable LSD can spend a lot of time just getting the car to handle the way it does stock, forget about improving its handling. Same goes for suspension, which has certain values that are always the same regardless of what car or even type of car its placed on. Why would a FF Kei car with 63hp have the same LSD as a 500hp FR sports sedan. Dampers, anti-roll bars, camber and toe are the same on a 2000kg 4wd as on a 900kg MR, really, I don't think so. Don't want or need the parts to be pre optimized, just need them to have starting values that actually make some sort of sense for that vehicle.
If PD doesn't want to give us the parts with a better base setting, then a simple easy tuner option that would make basic adjustments to the cars setup would benefit those who just want to drive and have no interest in spending hours or days fine tuning a car for a specific track and/or driver, while still offering those of us who like to try and tune cars to their full potential the freedom to do so.

I understand what you're saying. But I take it for example, such as cars that are "Tuned by Gran Turismo", would have an optimal setup for the car.(I'm not sure, so don't quote me on it.) Now, if I got the same car, (as in the 370z GT Academy and stock 370z), and run them together, wouldn't the stock suspension setup be worse?

What I would do would be try to tune the car my way, and try to tune it to the best of my ability to beat it.
--It would push me to make my car better than theirs.
---That's my take on it.

That's what I thought that I said at first, lol.

Having an optimized "Gran Turismo" or "Tuned by Kaz" setup would be nice too.

That's actually a good idea. Having an option to have your current vehicle using recommended settings/parts would be very helpful.

Um Snake, when is the last time you compared 10 different cars' setups? They were ALL different. I HIGHLY doubt Kaz tells the setup programmers "just use a bunch of random values, let the gamers sort it out".

So, yeah, mmhmm.

How about 30 cars all factored and tested for a 660 PP class?

Or maybe all the FIA GT3 class cars I could find in the game driven too match them by true life specs and times at Sarthe 2009? I know for a fact the cars base game settings are not just thrown in the same way for all the cars. If that where the case we would be playing Need for Speed not GT5.

Yea it should be tuned to perfection with automatic setup but it would still be based on the driver abilities you can have a perfectly tuned car and still make mistakes like misjudge your braking distance or turn too hard or lightly

I just wonder, if people can't or not willing to learn how to tune..

Why do they mount race add on that must be tweaked. Fully adjustable gearbox, race suspension, fully adjustable LSD etc.

It's an option to add more simple suspension witch is much easier to master both behind the wheel and in the setup menu.

If we talk about race cars then you should try the simple stuff first, being able to have a crew in the real world would mean you have started out somewhere and worked your way up. Learning the basics yourself and try it out and try some more.

If you just see it as a game and would not spend that much time on it, then go with the simpler option. The more advanced option would have to be the rewarding people who spend some time learning it should have. Not something you should get for free.

Sharing it would be a option I like, people learn from that.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at. It may be the best tune for that car, but if the driver can't drive that car, then it's no use to have it on there. But, if my friend and I are driving the same 2 cars, ala 370Z GT Academy and a stock 370Z and his beat mine, I would try to work on my car to make mine better to where I can actually make it a very close race or beat him.

Updated first post after readerinputs. Thanks for even more suggestions and good ideas! Hopefully some are appliable ingame and that Kaz & co reads this and just goes all in with the ideas. But whatever results, one must not give up on hope :)

i've been playing since the days of gt1 and back then me and a mate used to do basic set up changes soften/stiffen i think thats about it lol
but now with the internet and gtp im im racing same mate online as well as others
but now im making adjustments myself fine tuning my cars im not the fastest or greatest tuner but love winning races with my set up my work
suspension wise ive got some cars set up just how i like to drive them so nxt im gonna learn lsd and camber
after a while of adjustment its easy to spot under/over steer and make adjustments
watching replays to see how car rides over the bumps/curbs/turns in/exits turns

and just in my opinion but i think it makes the game so much more enjoyable to drive on my tunes
as ive tried many from here but each person drive there own style so i've found mine better for me
