AUTOSAVE "feature" DELETES garage cars

This guy wan't trying to cheat the game. He wanted to back up his progress on another card. That is not an unreasonable thing to try and do. And how the hell would he have known that he HAD to reset in order to save on another card? I highly doubt anyone would sabatoge their hard work on purpose or perhaps you feel he should have had a crystal ball.

You are not supposed to remove memory cards during gameplay in any game, period. Even the instructions for the PS2 etc tell you not to insert or remove anything whilst it's turned on.

There is a reason for this, as the topic creator has seemingly found out. And he should have known because he should've read these instructions. Hell, I'll bet even the GT4 instruction booklet tells you not to insert or remove the memory card whilst it's turned on.

I swapped a memory card and did a save on the Japanese version and it came up with various pop-ups that I responded to and manage to empty my garage with money still intact. I switched off and reloaded from the proper memory card and everything was OK. Needless to say I have used the PS2 Browser since.

I will have a play tonight and see if I can reproduce the problem on the American version.

After I completed the Driving Missions, I went to my garage to sell the cars that I had won and the game locked up. I reloaded the game and it locked up again when I tried to go to my garage. This happened when I had auto-save on. I had to restart the whole game over again since I couldn't access my garage. I have since turned auto-save to Resticted and saved my game to a second memory card. And no, I did not remove my memory card while the game was on.

That's hilarious. Most instructions tell you not to remove the memory card, controller, or reset while loading or saving. I have never seen a game or an instruction booklet state that you can not "insert or remove anything whilst it's turned on". That is ridiculus.

Would you turn off the ps2 every time you wanted to copy data to another memory card in the browser if you didn't have the second card already in the slot? People can just stick the card in while the system is on without causing corruption.

Anyone who has the NSTC version of the game, where in the instruction manual does it state that you can not switch cards or you will loose data. Just point me to the page.....

I mean is that hard to feel bad for the guy?

Hmm. Maybe the "various pop-ups" said that if you swap memory cards and save while playing all your cars will be gone?

I've had no problems whatsoever with my copy of the game. had it for 4 days now. at 8.5% complete and lovin it

I cant seem to get something to transfer my pictures from my memory card tho... ><!!!

Yeah really. The point of this thread wasn't whether or not he is an idiot... IMO he was just pointing out his problem in the hopes that someone knew how to get his cars back, and if not, let this be a warning to all on this forum. Four pages later the guy has to register as a Video Game Offender.

Playin' normally? What do you mean? Likenot removing memory card and Auto save is off? Explain it.

Apparently if you have 2 memory cards and you want to make a backup save of your game you can not just take out memory card one and save to memory card 2. You have to reset the ps2, go into the browser and copy the file to the other memory card that way. If you try to do it in the game, all the cars in your garage disappear except for the one your in. So moral of the story, don't swap memory cards and try to save again or you will likely loose your cars.

Here is example on how to lose all cars in your garage:
1-Just completed Rally Capri, go to garage go to "save" save on memory card 1.
2-Take out memory card 1 insert memory card 2 "save".
3-Reinsert memory card 1 play game, take on a endro ?
4-Save game back at garage. AND poof no more garage filled with cars.

Without knowing that your garage is your "memory card" Yep, all cars in your garage not currently being used resides in your memory card.

aaahhAHH, now it's good to know that Can't imagine what the people are going thrue if they didn't read forums They REALLY don't have a clue why this happens If someone that's "cheating" or something with memory cards deserves this, I don't think so you shouldn't have punishements in a game!!! Just the risk of doing that and lose all your cars alone prettty scares me, although I've never "cheated" or something else with a memory card EVER in ANY game.............this is a stupid feature (if intended), cause you may do wathever you like with your own game and memory card: I mean it's >>>YOUR<<<< game and >>>YOUR<<< memory card and YOUR saved cars it's just completely useless!!! @Baron - thanks I didn't realize that after saving on the second that he put the first back in and saved over.

This does suck because I can see alot of people doing thing in an innocent attempt to backup their save just in case assuming this would be a safe way to do so.

I don't like the saving system in GT4, the fact it saves automatically when you change your car even if you put it on restricted. if you want to do something dumb with a car, you must not change your car because your dumb action gets saved.

The example I gave minus saving memory card 1 (a second time) was what I did. Right after finishing all License Tests-I just wanted a memory card with Licenses done.
Thankfully I went back into my garage to get into a car and saw what was not there which was all cars except the Cougar.

Now all saves are done on one memory card.

Wow that sucks. It's just those cars? Do you have other cars in your garage? Did you do anything like remove your car while it was saving or anything? All these garage problems are REALLY starting to scare me. Guess I'll back up my save later on.

No, aparently your garage data is on your memory card it doesnt just save its loading too.. This is mostly likey how there can be up to 1000 cars in your garage, Gt2-100 GT3-200, GT4-1000+. True about the dumb part thats why i wont spend 20k on snow tires . Arcade mode is were you can just let lose in a car with snow or dirt tires.

The same thing just happened to my garage...all gone!...this freakin sucks....i had 50+ cars...not like i used most of them neway but the worst part is it happened right after i won the nurburgring 24 hour race and won the F1 car...this is crap...o well...i still have one good car at least (Concept Z LM Race Car) but for some reason all the rest r gone...my plan is to just win the nurburgring 24 h again on b-spec with this car and then race with these 2 untill day 694 when i use my winnings to buy one of those used LMP cars...

Well, I gotta ask the obvious question: did you take out the memory card while the game was running?

The core of the problem is that PD changed how they save to the memory card and it is different from any other game I've played. Apparently they don't resave the entire 1.5MB save file each time, but only "update" the file to include what has changed. (I'm guessing this was a tactic to conserve as much of the PS2's 32MB of RAM as they possibly could and is likely the reason that autosave cannot be fully disabled.)

Unfortunately, this means that you can't do what you can do in virtually every other game on the planet and just save to multiple memory cards, you actually have to duplicate the full 1.5MB file instead, if you wish to backup your data.

The problem is not that this method of saving exists (in fact, it was rather clever of PD to use this as a trade-off to allow for all the data they have to juggle), but rather that PD doesn't really advertise this fact well enough considering it is so contrary to how the rest of the games that currently exist operate.

However...

That said, when it tries to save and notices that the save file is different than it was last time, you are given very obvious warnings before continuing that strongly recommend you reinsert the original card or data could be lost. If you got this message and walked right through it and lost data, then it is really hard to feel sorry for you.

Oh, and a feature to backup your game data to another card from within GT4 would have been a very welcome addition and could have eliminated this issue entirely.

But then again, before starting up the game you can use the PS2's own browser to copy game data. I have safely done this a couple of times, no problems whatsoever. It's nice to have a backup, given the crappy situation where you turn "autosave off" and it still saves data.

The person you responded to has posted the most logical comments in this thread, so I am sure that he is well aware of this, as are most people. He is simply stating that it would have been much more 'convenient' to do it from within the main menu of GT4, like you could in GT3, rather that having to do it from the browser menu. I actually use three (3) cards on a rotating basis, but having to using the browser is more of a hassle and there must be some reason why PD elected to do it the way they did.
