Nürburgring 4Hr Race Report:
After getting my international driver's permit, I headed to Germany to compete at the hallowed Nürburgring. The 4 hour race is hard fought and I need a car that can do the job!
I headed down to the local Audi Dealer and with my winnings from the last couple of races, purchased a brand new TTS in Glutorange. I also bought a few upgrades, with a bigger turbo, exhaust, air filter and retune of the ECU I increased the power from 268 to 386 hp (and 490 N.m of Torque). After I got it back to the workshop, I set the team to work ripping out the leather seats and all the other luxo bits I wouldn't need for the race, dropping the mass to a svelte 1173 kg.
Rolling up to the start line, these were my opponents:
Y He: Mine's BNR34 Skyline GT-R V-Spec N1 Base '00 *
G Barrios: HPA Motorsports FT565 twin turbo Audi TT *
E de Groot: Amuse S2000 GT1 '04 *
V Nunez: Nismo 400R '96
S. Zapata: HPA Stage II R32
B Phelps: HKS CT230R '08 *
Badger: TTS Coupe '09
N McGowan: Nismo Skyline GT-R R-tune '99
A Daniels: Nismo Fairlady Z Z-tune (Z33) '03 *
B Holcomb: Mine's BNR34 Skyline GT-R N1 base '06 *
H Fuijimoto: Nissan Gran Turismo Skyline GT-R '01
A Eskeline: Amuse Nismo 380RS Super Leggera
Plenty of fast cars, most with heaps more power than I do, in fact most have well over 500 hp.
Lap 1: 9'9.508 Lost ground right away as several drivers started racing before anyone got to the start line, Barrios passed He and Zapata passed Nunez. Phelps was blocked by Zapata then passed Nunez and de Groot passed He too. At turn 1 it was Barrios, de Groot, He, Zapata, Phelps, Nunez then me. They all went wide left for the corner, leaving me a clear late brake into 3rd. I then passed de Groot in corner 2 but I couldn't get past Barrios until Hocheichen, then Barrios and de Groot stayed close behind me for the whole lap. De Groot gets past Barrios at the Karussell, but can't catch me. On the straight de Groot catches up, but isn't fast enough to get past due to a poor job slipstreaming (he doesn't sit behind me!), but is very close at the start finish, and makes a pass on me up the inside into turn 1, but compromised his corner, can't turn in from the inside line, has to slow down to make the corner, and not only doesn't get the place, but loses a spot to Barrios and I am in front again followed by Barrios.
Lap 2: 9'4.44 Barrios in front of de Groot all the way, holding him up. I've pulled out 2.5 s by Aremberg, then 3.7 by Karussell. Lost a bunch of the lead around Wipperman, trying not to push the tyres, back to 1.1s on the straight, but enough to stay ahead again. Barrios blocks de Groot heavily on the straight, and neither can get in my slipstream, so I stay ahead again and then both back out at Antoniousbuche giving me enough to stay ahead at the end of the lap.
Lap 3: 9'2.067 De Groot finally passes Barrios on turn 1, lets see how fast he is without someone holding him up. I'm much faster through Flugplatz, and at Aremberg am 1.3s ahead. I take Bergwerk a bit wide and lose time. He's catching me through the Pflanzgartens and is about 0.8s behind onto the straight, but again can't catch me and get past. Tries again on the GP straight but very slow at turn 1.
Lap 4: 9'3.605 Daniels in the Z tune has fought through the traffic, caught Barrios on the straight, and passes in turn 1 to get to 3rd. I'm gaining some ground on de Groot, but then through Ex Muhle and Bergwerk I'm slow out of the corners and he's on my tail, I drift into the grass after Mutkurve and he overtakes at Kostertal. I chase him though the next few corners and get him at Wipperman. Onto the straight again again I have just 1s lead, which is enough, but this time Daniels catches and passes de Groot and jumps into 2nd place.
Lap 5: 9'6.544 de Groot tries to take 2nd back in turn 1 but overcooks it. Daniels is still in 2nd, but is holding de Groot up through the windy bits and my lead grows throughout the lap to about 2.7s. Tyres are getting a bit worse on 5th lap, a couple of moments, drifted wide at Megeltzfeld but nothing major. I'm happy because Daniels in the Z tune is holding up the de Groot in the GT1, so I'll keep going for 1 more lap and see how it handles, hope I don't regret it! About 3s lead onto the straight, so no drafting for Daniels but de Groot can't seem to get past him either...
Lap 6: 9'18.613 As lap 6 starts, everybody except Phelps in the HKS (and Eskeline and Nunez in 11th and 12th) hit the pits. I have 11s on Phelps on the GP track, and now I’m getting overconfident and I overcook Flugplatz, spin and lose 7s! Lead drops to only 3.8s, but I put in a steady lap and end up 5.8s ahead going onto the straight, and then right into the pits. 63L of fuel used for 6 laps. Phelps pits right behind me.
Lap 7: 9'32.658 17 L in and out of the pits, still in the lead. At the first split I'm 9s ahead of Daniels, but lose about 1.5s through the GP circuit on cold tyres. Doing just 5 laps this stint, I try to take it easy on thevcold tyres.. Daniels is catching me the whole lap and by the straight is only 0.9s behind, and at the gantry just 0.096s but I stay ahead over the line.
Lap 8: 8'58.793 de Groot finally takes 2nd place back from Daniels on turn 1 after catching on the straight and getting alongside on the pit straight, I’m hoping they have used up their medium tyres and I can hold them off again… de Groot is right behind me, just 0.5s back and again I can't manage to get Ex-muhle right- I don't think I've hit it one time this race! Bergwerk not so bad, and then I get a beautiful run through Pflanztgarten 2 and I'm 1.5s ahead at the start of the straight, enough to stay ahead for another lap.
Lap 9: 9'2.01 de Groot is still right behind me but now I'm making time, gain 1.5s from Flugplatz to Fuchsrohre, and doing well, but then overcook it at Brunnchen and slide off into the grass. I make up time through Pflanzgarten 2 again and onto the straight I'm 0.9s ahead… Daniels catches but doesn't pass de Groot and over the line I'm just ahead again...
Lap 10: 9'0.064 de Groot is losing time now on odl tyres, I nail Flugplatz, am smooth through the rest except brake late and a bit messy in Weirsefen and by the straight I'm 4.8s ahead. However, I'm coming up to the 5th lap where tyres are getting unhappy, so need to be careful. I'm guessing everyone will pit except Phelps who is in 6th but a long way back...
Lap 11: 9'1.669 After everyone else pits, I'm 55s ahead of Phelps at the start of the lap but this increases to 58s by Fuchsrohre. Tyres are noticeably less grippy but I'm managing ok and being smooth. Lap is fast and I have 1L of fuel when I pit. I'll need to put more that 17L in this time and so let's see where I come out…
Lap 12: 10'7.123 Put in 54L +1 left over for 55L total, as the red light was on after 5 laps with 54L in that last stint. I'm 1:06 up on de Groot as I roll over the line in the pit lane, but come out just 9.5s ahead at the next marker. Lost 2s through the GP track on cold tyres and out of rhythm - it's almost like I've been asleep and just woken up again. 6.5 s ahead at Flugplatz, but brake too late for Aremberg and a small excursion on the grass loses me more time. Now just 4s ahead. Stay ahead ok through the rest of the circuit until I'm late braking after the Stefan bellof S's and the rear brakes lock up on the creat and car jumps sideways, putting me off into the grass. As I recover from the spin, de Groot goes flying past and then frantically trying to keep up to try to draft on the straight I run wide at the Kleine Karrusell, compounding my error! Now I'm 13.8s behind at the start of the straight and way too far behind to gain anything from the draft... Will lose another second+ on the straight like usual due to less power so I'm 16.2s behind at the end of the lap, and Daniels is not far behind...
Lap 13: 8'57.920 Lost some time in the GP circuit, out to 17s deficit. Put in a great, steady lap, gaining down to 16s but lose time through Pflanzgarten 2 and by the time I hit the straight I'm now 20s behind. Daniels still just behind me about 2-3 s back, but catches me in the last 2 corners and is right behind me on the GP straight. - 21s behind de Groot who must have lapped under 8:53 - much faster than I can manage! Best lap of the race and nowhere near good enough to catch him.
Lap 14: 9'7.117 Half way through the GP track I'm over 24s behind, de Groot in the s2000 is flying without traffic in the way! I think I might make a little time once his tyres start going off in this lap. I'm gaining and the gap drops down to 22s, but I get a bit wide out of Galgenkopf , put a wheel in the grass and spin, losing all my speed onto the main straight. Daniels goes past, I manage to draft him a little, but now I'm 33s behind. This catching up plan isn't working out...
Lap 15: 9'7.034 Brake way too late for the turn 1 hairpin and run wide. Daniels goes past, but I catch Daniels through the GP circuit and first part of the nordschleife, passing him just after Flugplatz. I'm pushing to catch de Groot and overcook the corner leading into Mezgesfeld, letting Daniels past again. I catch him and pass into Weirsefen... I need to calm down, as I'm losing time by pushing too hard... Rest of the lap is a bit untidy, I get sideways at Brunnchen, but somehow hold it together. At the start of the straight I'm now 38s behind de Groot who pits at the end of the lap. Over the line I have a 37.5s deficit and I need to pit next lap.
Lap 16: 9'6.596 tyres will be going off, I need to take it easy, but let's see how far behind de Droot is after pitting… The first split shows I'm now ahead by 24s, just need to keep it steady for this lap. I do ok, the tyres aren't too bad but I'm losing time the whole lap, from 20s to 18 to 17s to 11 to 10.4s ahead at tiergarten... not too bad a time for a 5th lap, but will it be enough... I can't short fuel to stay ahead, so I'll need another strategy, I'll switch to a softer tyre compound and see if I can make the tyres last...
Lap 17: 9'55.583 I add 64L of petrol and swap to medium tyres, coming out in 3rd place. Have to make up the time I lost, hopefully can do 5 or 6 Lap stints on Mediums, because I completed the first 13 laps in under 2 hours, so that means we will be on the 27th lap before 4 hours elapse. I'll need to manage 6 laps on this or the last stint, may be ok if I can stay in front, as long as I don't spin or crash as the tyres go off. I lose at least 4-5 seconds trying to tell the pit crew about the tyre change and the fuel load. 53s behind at the first marker, doing ok, but a bit untidy through Pflanzgarten 2 and have to back off a bit. 57s behind at the start of the straight, 59 s at the start line...
Lap 18: 8'52.439 Bit discouraged that I lost time during that lap, but I'm getting used to the different grip, braking points and corner speeds. This lap goes well, I'm catching Daniels, and no errors. Lap time? Not sure yet. At the straight I'm now 54.5 s behind, made up some time, but not fast enough to get a draft from Daniels... Lap time of 8'52 is fast enough to catch up if I can maintain it for 6 laps without stuffing it up... Hopefully we come up on some lapped traffic or I might not make it...
Lap 19: 8'50.832 Throughout the lap I can see I'm making up time, -57, -56, -54, -52s. At Ex-Muhle I catch a glimpse Daniels ahead and push on to catch him. I fire out of Bergwerk and am getting closer and closer. Coming up to Pflanzgarten I see he has caught Nunez in the 400R and is trying to get past. Daniels gets past, but Nunez is is hopping all over the track going into Pflanzgarten II. I sit back cautiously waiting for my moment, and slide past up the inside of the crest of the 2nd Stefan Bellof S. I'm right behind Daniels through Gallenkopf, and stay close enough to get a bit of draft on the straight. I draft up to 290km/h before the gantry, much faster than my usual 272km/h at the start finish line I'm just 51s behind de Groot and less than 1s behind Daniels. Best lap of the race.
Lap 20: 8'53.944 Still 3 more laps on these tyres, lets see if we can pull de Groot in a bit, clearly he wasn't held up by Nunez, but his tyres will be starting to go off now… I pass Daniels on turn 3 and leave him well behind. I'm flying now, holding high speeds through Flugplatz and by Aremberg I'm within 48s. I finally nail the exit of Ex-muhle and I'm 45s behind, and making up time. Not sure if de groot is in traffic, or just tyres going off. At the start of the straight, 43.29s behind, but de Groot will pit this time and I have 2 more laps on these tyres... 42.173 behind at the line.
Lap 21: 9'1.709 Tyres are feeling a bit second hand, a couple of loose moments, slow down too much for Flugplatz, brake too late a Weirsefen but save it. The splits are dropping the whole lap as de Groot is on new tyres, 19.1s in the GP track, down to 17 a Arenberg, 14 through the Karussell, and 10.6 at the start of the straight. Can see some traffic ahead on the GP track to help me, and hopefully I can be traffic and slow him down over the next lap if he catches me..
Lap 22: 9'9.678 I'm just 7s ahead in the GP track. Tyres seem ok, just have to manage them. Losing time everywhere, I'm braking early and being cautious as I can't afford to spin and let him past easily. He catches me at at the Karussell and I think I'm holding him off when I get untidy into the corner before Hohe Acht, touching the grass after the fast left. The rear steps out, I catch it but lose a lot of speed and de Groot carrying a lot of speed goes past on the second part of the corner. In a blink he's past and disappears up the road, no chance of staying ahead. He's 6s ahead by the time we start the straight. I'll have to do better on lap 27 if he's on my tail! At least my tyres will be one lap younger... Hopefully chasing me has caused his tyres to wear a bit quicker too... pit in with just 1L of fuel left. 5 laps to go! Wish me luck!
Lap 23: 9'41.456 I add 54L to get me to the end of lap 27. Tyres were 50% worn. I'm 58s behind on the GP track first sector, I managed to catch him last stint from further behind, so it is possible to win from here. Daniels passes as I pull out of the pits, tyres are cold, but I am able to pass him as we enter the old circuit. I'm going well, but de Groot is also on fresh tyres and so at the straight I'm still 57s behind, and usually lose 1 s in the last (fast) bit. At the line I'm 58.5s behind, better than I was last stint...
Lap 24: 8'51.114 I'm going well, tyres have heaps of grip, and every sector I'm taking a little bit of time. I nail Flugplatz and Ex-muhle. I brake a bit too much at Mutkurve. At the straight I'm only 52.065s behind, and 53.09 at the line.
Lap 25: 8'54.832 Another good lap, hit Flugplatz and make up 4 seconds in that sector alone! Hit Ex-muhle and by the time I start the straight it's now down to a 45s gap Over the line 44.3 s as de Groot pits. Not the fastest lap, but catching up!
Lap 26: 9'11.017 First checkpoint has me 18s ahead, 2 laps to defend, and I thought the tyres would be good, but they are clearly going off already. I mess up the turn in for Flugplatz and a little excursion onto the grass costs me greatly. de Groot slowly catches me in the rest of the lap and is right behind at Pflanzgarten 2. He can't pass though and I stay ahead onto the straight, 0.8s ahead, and still 0.6 at the line and there is 1m 51 left in the race, putting me into another lap... Now I have to defend for the whole lap or I'm toast...
Lap 27: 9'7.767 I make up some time through the GP track, and then Flugplatz, leaving me 1.5s ahead at Aremberg. He's soon on my tail, tries to push past under braking at Weirsefen, but I'm having none of it. I pull out a bit more with a good exit from Bergwerk, even though the tyres aren't happy in the fast corners and I have to lift a couple of times to keep control. He tries again before Hohe Acht, but no dice! I keep it together through all the fast turns, and onto the straight I have about 0.9s lead. He isn't able to catch me on the straight yet again, getting just about level with me when we turn into Antoniusbuche, but I hold it flat and he backs out. Then it's just 3 more corners and across the line for a winning margin of less than 2 tenths...
What a race! My heart was racing for the final two laps and I can't believe I managed to hold de Groot off in a clearly faster car!
