Banner Ads: We have a problem

First off, I occationally get double ads. Meh, I don't pay attention to them anyway.

Also, they're for the strangest things. We're car guys and video gamers ... why am I getting ads for Visa? Termite control? Womens ... stuff ... Your ad supplier isn't well informed.

And just now, I got an ad for that inexpensive home security thing that sounds an alarm when a door is opened. You know what? The ad had sound. They talked to me, then they demonstrated.

This displeases me greatly.

Now I don't mind the ads, I have even click on a few. But the one in rotation now with the audio...needs to go away. Audio ads are BAD BAD BAD BAD. Especially that one.

Otherwise the banners don't bug me, I sorta like them. Though i agree your ad server could target the content of the ads better. Video games, electronics, cars, tech toys, travel....stuff like that.

EDIT:

One other thing I just noticed. Your ad space is 468x60. But your ad server seems to be server larger pixel sized ads (the damn audio TV "just $14.99 lock thing" is on now). They look to be 700x300pixel or larger banners.

I recommend that Jordan initiate GTPremium ASAP, that way there will be more money coming in to Jordan, and fewer ads will happen. :)

My NIS2004 adblocker works perfect. Mabye something for you to try, Loudmusic?
Where can you download that?
GTP Lite would be faster if the ad wouldn't be there.

Ehrm sorry, should have written it out. Norton Internet Security 2004 has an adblocking feature which works very well.

GTP premium sounds like it may be a good idea, but the problem is it will create just another clique where the people with premuim will only interact with themselves, and and if there is shared posts, the "premiums" would chase away the " economy" guests....

Segregation is not cool

I don't really want to block the ads. A single banner ad at the top of the page isn't bad if it's done correctly. The ad delivery service just isn't sending the right kind of ads. They need to be more content corresponding and most definitely not make sounds. They also need to stay in the little box they came from (:

What is this Premium stuff you all are talking about? I'm not finding anything on the forums. If it's a pay service, I don't see how that could be segregation. I would pay a couple bucks a month ($20 a year?) for ad-free GTPlanet. Then there's only one difference from people who don't pay - an annoying ad at the top of every page.

I just use the AdBlock extension for Firefox. Works beautifully.

*gasp*

Where did you come from? I thought you had moved on! Or do you just post ever-so-rarely anymore that I'm lucky to find you in a thread I started? (:

And again I'll say that I don't want to block the ads - I simply want them to be appropriate, both in product and in style.

I'm here every now and then. Thinking a bit about bringing back an old GT idea from way back when GT4 is released, so I figured I should catch up a bit.

Well, absolutely nothing is definite yet, but I would like to look at bringing back the old Turismo Informer. With the sheer number of cars available in GT4 and the photo mode - the whole thing lends itself quite well.

And, with my own server and website(s), I don't have to worry about the hosting issues I've had in the past. My web design/programming has been...well, increased as of late, so I feel that I can create quite the site to surround it.

Dunno - we'll just have to see.

Turismo Informer?? Is that the collection of information about cars and tracks? Pictures included? I was going to work on that as well. I need to get my PS2 hooked up to my computer and get all the video capture software working again. Perhaps I could help you on the imaging side of things (:

I believe Turismo Transformer, was that online magazine with GT3 car comparisons, am I correct?

But it went offline a few years back.

LM is right, kinda. It was a failed (at the time) concept. I had no audience, really. The Turismo Informer was written in the style of magazines like C&D and Autoweek - but using GT3 cars and tracks. The hardest part back then was taking the 'photos' for the articles. Positioning the car in a consistent manner via the replay was a really pain in the rear. GT4's photo mode should change all of that.

I've got a lot of stuff on my plate at this point (nearing full-release of my 5-year-long web game project, planning another web game (that folks at GTP might like - *wink*), partnering a new web design company, running my own little community) so I don't know if it'll actually happen.

I'll probably have to test the waters a bit and see if people are even interested in something like this.

[Edit]Oh, and the only site went offline because Gamespy deleted the site - no warning...

Well hopefully I won't be a lame-ass on GT4 like I was with GT3 and actually be able to provide some web content like photos and videos. I have a really nice video capture card (PVR350) that I just need to make use of.

I also have an insane ability to record data, transfer it to alternative formats, and redistribute it. I have several threads on GTP and S2ki.com with all kinds of statistical data that no one really cares about, but I put it all together.

So, maybe I can give you a hand and we'll provide GTP and / or your site and / or my own site with some GT4 info for the masses.

Sounds good to me. I'll look you up when/if the time comes. Same for you, sUn.

Wow, can't believe I helped hijack my own thread. I'm reaching all new lows!

Back to the topic: Jordan, the banner ad service is CRAP. Unless they're paying ungodly amounts of money for that, I would suggest finding something more in target with the GTP user base. Surely you get more payout when the ads are actually clicked on. They need to be advertising things that young, spoiled males are interested in. Video games, cars, girls. As far as I know, nothing else matters (:

Surely you could get deals with other game sites such as gamespot or ign for permanent ad space? Or find an ad rotator that has more customizable ad delivery? We're getting home loan stuff here! That's nuts! 90% of your user base can't spell home loan!

Is it fate? I just happened to pop an old CD in the drive that I thought had something specific on it - and it has the last site backup for the Informer site...
