What is this Premium stuff you all are talking about? I'm not finding anything on the forums. If it's a pay service, I don't see how that could be segregation. I would pay a couple bucks a month ($20 a year?) for ad-free GTPlanet. Then there's only one difference from people who don't pay - an annoying ad at the top of every page.

GTPremium is a pay service that was discussed for a bit before we made the switch to GTP6. Supposedly it was to be implemented as a part of the switch, but it has essentially died. Here is the thread about it:

And just now, I got an ad for that inexpensive home security thing that sounds an alarm when a door is opened. You know what? The ad had sound. They talked to me, then they demonstrated.
Holly friekin' cow – so that's what that noise was! Yesterday whilst using my computer, I kept hearing this lady talking from my speakers… I paused iTunes to make sure it wasn't some ambient noise from a song, I made sure I wasn't downloading a movie, I even looked at my networking monitor to make sure nothing was downloading and looked at my activity monitor to make sure nothing unexpected was open. I was even considering going to the MacNN forums and reporting that my computer was talking to me (I resisted the urge, as they'd probably think I was trolling or something).

Hot dang, I can't believe it was just a silly Flash ad.

And with that said, I've also been wanting to say something about the ad targeting, which makes no sense. I've been particularly wondering about the huge amount of home insurance ads…

Hmm... either you guys complain too much or I've become pretty used to/immune to these ads. I don't mind them but some do seem a little odd, say like the Playboy ones I've seen lately. Anyway, I'd rather not have GTP change like someone earlier said it would split gtp members. I like this place a lot but not THAT much to subscribe (I don't subscribe to anything except car mags).

BTW, Loud... have too much time on your hands or what?

Are you serious? :dopey:

What makes you say that? (: And yes. I hate my job. But it pays well, and I post on various web forums all day. So I take the money and run.

But I need a hobby.

Do I dare say yes.

Eh... it just sounds like you needed attention there? I understand though... sometimes I'd like to do the same thing when people arn't on (at work too).

BTW, ok... I just experienced one with sound and that is damn irritating especially since you can't turn the sound off... I think there should be some law about that. :irked:

One ad I've seen in the last couple of days is for "GFizz - MEN FOR THE LOVE OF MEN" ( http://www.gfizzcontest.com/ )

Now, I have no issue with anyone's sexual preference, and I've even gone on the record chastizing folks who gay bash, or even use derogatory terms like "that's so gay" but IMHO this is an unacceptable ad for GTP. I have to wonder of this type of ad borders on violating the TOS here.

Jordan, do you have any control over ad content with this service?

I've never seen anyhting remotely interperetable as suggestive, with the possible exception of the "Your Type?" ones. Everything else has been utterly non-sexual.

"Win a private jet and 4 grand to blow"

I also get these talking ads that come from the banner. One is a TV Guide ad and the lady starts talking in it. The ad stays in the banner itself, but this annoying person talks.

Well, the fact of the matter is, Loud, that most of these ads from our ad server pay on a CPM basis, so the number of clicks don't matter. Besides, it's up to the ad agency to sell the ad space to the highest-paying advertisers, and most all of them have visited the site and confirmed that they wish to run their campaigns here. The agencies have our demographic survey results, and they still wish to run some of these strange ads on here, but as long as I'm getting compensated then it really doesn't matter if they are for home loans or video games.

I've researched virtually all of the ad networks out there, and most of the gaming site's ad networks (IGN, Gamespot, etc.) are very "cheap" and I can earn a lot more running these other kinds of ads with the large networks.

But I'm very upset to find out about these "Gfizz" ads and the ones with sound. I have those types of ads "blocked" with my agency so I am VERY suprised and angry to hear reports of them. I will contact them right away and try to get things straightened out.

Well, it's surprising to see that these people pay more for advertising that won't sell their product, than someone who is almost certain to make a buck from adversiting here.

Have fun fighting with the ad deliverer about the sound ads (:

Did you used to be a super-moderator LM or am i thinking of someone else?

And the ad's do not bother me a bit - even the pop-up ones (although i don't think i've had any pop-ups here).

Jordan once offered me moderator capabilities, but I turned him down because I didn't want to be a baby sitter for all the kids. Though now I wouldn't might the power, if I could do my duties without anyone knowing I was a mod.

I did design / create over 650 avatars for GTP. And I've been here a damn long time.

aww... That chick is so dense... She's standing there, says "I like how it moves with me" and she starts shaking. :dopey:👍 (way up)

OK, the video ad and the "breast" banners have both been deactivated.

I must have dreamed the other night that there were video game ads. They were similar to the ones that Penny Arcade run. I remember my mouth dropping open, and then I shrugged and click "slashdot" in my link menu.

do they have to be so big, though? it blocks up the entire top part of the forum :nervous:..

Clip6.jpg

edit: and no, you cannot close it.. the "X" on the ad is a fake, where if you click anywhere on the ad basically, it'll take you to a site... :)

You weren't logged in when you got that pop-up ad...

Breast add ? How did I miss it ? Someone kill the cell phone add that expands all over the page...kill it slow and with vigor!

"Gfizz"? What kind of advertising agency lets a company advertis on their network with a name like that? Disgusting...I've banned it from our rotations as well as the expanding cell phone ad.

How would one pronounce "Gfizz"?

Guh-fizz

Gee-fizz

Geh-fizz

Jea-fizz

I guess it doesn't matter now that it's been stricken (:

I just got three sound ads today when I was on the main forums page.

Also, there's a verizon ad where a phone pops up and covers part of the screen.

Haven't had any soud ad problems, that weird. Only once and awhile I will get that screensaver pop-up add, and that is only when I first enter the forum.

I can't seem to find any Verizon ads running on the site...be sure to take note of the advertiser if you find any ads with audio or video so I can kill them.

I just got one for the "Cold Heat Soldering Iron"

There's another one but I can't remember the product name off the top of my head, something about pet grooming possibly.

edit: here's the pet grooming one
