Hmmm, I hear that schools are now passing laws that forbid soda machines and the sale of candy in school buildings. Why? They say that candy stores are leading to obesity in students. What the hell is the world coming to!? Why is obesity, drug addiction, alcoholism, and ignorance always something or someone else's fault? You have got to love the American attitude toward problems. I don't understand why Americans insist on enforcing more rules instead of teaching responsibility. Some dudes hijack planes and fly them into the World Trade Center towers, which results in the banning of carry-on luggage and limiting the concourse level of airports to ticketed passengers only. Why can't we start upping technology, or, better yet, make those ****ing degenerates actually pay attention when they sit and watch those damn screens in the baggage X-ray terminals? Why can't we learn our limits on high-calorie foods? America is so hesistant to try and resolve a problem; I guess it's just not worth the effort to them. Instead, they impose bull**** rules on citizens--they punish them. Come on, America. You're pissing me off. I understand that we have a stuttering prick for a president, but we're the land of the free, home of the Atlanta Braves...

I don't see how that will work

Kids like candy simple as that ..if they can't get it at school they will just bring in their own

pretty pointless law if you ask me .
But no doubt that it will end up as a law in the U.K in the future...

Some (most?) school districts have a meager budget to spend on food. (You know, that terrible fare that passes for sustenence!) So when part of that taxpayer-paid-for budget is spent on junk food, it makes some people angry.

If the entire food budget is eventually spent on junk food, then the choices presented to kids are lacking. They might think caffeine, sucrose, starch, and and Red #5 are part of the 4 basic food groups.

I feel good examples should be set at schools.

"They might think caffeine, sucrose, starch, and and Red #5 are part of the 4 basic food groups."

At my old high school, I heard that the coke machines weren't allowed to be in the cafeteria... so they were moved to the hall next to the cafeteria.

My school has made it a rule that soda machines are not to be turned on until after 2:40, yet they are easily accessed and there are several throughout the building that are on all day long. Its ridulous; why have them if they arent on during the school day? People still bring candy, food, and soda from home so its one of those unneeded rules.

Last year and the year before my HS had soda machines open all day long...but this year they stopped that and only made it so you buy sodas after school...they also don't allow drinks outside of the cafeteria due to some freshmans mixing drinks in the bathrooms....idiots...now I'll be honest and say that I have drank during school...summer school...teacher had no idea...and it was during class...freshman these days aren't slick...

Well, i've kinda gone off lollies (as we call candy over here) as they aren't as addictive as the used to be.

We have a canteen that has coke drinks and chips, but no-one is really obese here...

This should be in Opinions.

Schools are paid by corporations to sell and advertize their products. If a school's Coke machine sells a certain amount of soda, the school gets money.

Fine. The schools need the money. The fact that this is one of the only ways they'll get it is a problem. I have even heard of schools actively promoting the availability of corporate **** food during anouncements when threatened with getting cut off by the suits. It is called blackmail.

I really see no problem with promoting healthy eating habits in schools. A good start would be to offer healthy foods. But if you have a fruit juice machine next to a Coke machine, Coke is going to put it's billions of dollars behind that machine to make sure the juice is pulled due to lack of interest. Coke does not give two ****s about kids' health. They have one purpose and that is to make more money than last quarter. This is antithetical to what schools have been (and should be)... but sadly, it's not antithetical to what schools are becoming. The schools are screwed because they need money but nobody wants to pay taxes for it, especialy these frickin' old farts who can't remember anything but their last tee-time. So American kids become bloated charicatures, little depositories of cheap, corporate **** food. And the crabby old farts sit around "tsk-tsking" all the fat, unhealthy kids. Just another exression of the inherent evil in capitalism. Some day this will be seen as an early symptom of the decline, when childrens' heath and well being took a back seat to corporate dominance, market manipulation, and greed.

I worry about the way kids don't grow up anymore, but rather, they grow into corporate culture, where everything is calculated to make money at any and all costs. The so-called educators who justify this are sell-outs and failures.

So try bringing a banana to school with you and lay off the Snickers. Drink water and leave the Coke. Tell these pricks in suits you don't want them making choices for you life.

Sorry, it's not Bush's fault for this one. We'll just have to get him on some other charge.
