Ok I know its a little over a month away till the new English Premier league saeson 2009/2010 kicks off, but that time will fly by. I thought I would start off a new thread devoted to discssing this. Since there is no actual footie being played at the moment (obviously!) I will just fill in with general team news, transfers and rumors. In case you have been on the Moon celebrating here are the teams for 2009/2010 (in alphabetic order).

Ok I will kick off as it were, seeing as I am a Birmingham City fan (yes boo to you too missus!), heres some news important to me anyway:


Birmingham clinch Ferguson deal
Birmingham have completed the signing of former Scotland captain Barry Ferguson from Rangers for a fee in the region of £1.2m.

Wigan have completed the signing of Jason Scotland from Swansea for £2m.

Yes I agree we can I think leave transfers to that thread, and then start perhaps filling this one with friendlies and actual league action when the season gets under way. I just added some transfer stuff at the top to get the thread kicked off. 👍

To give this thread a bit of a kick start, I've just enjoyed watching nited game against Valencia and I was very happy with the result. The disapointment of the game for me was Carrick, he seems to be struggling lately. It's as though he's a second slower from getting the ball and deciding what to do with it at the moment. But other than that I was impressed. Valencia played well, though I hope he doesn't try to take on as many players and as regularly as he did tonight in the league. It's good to see a plaer take a man on, but not all the time when there are simple but potentially effective passes to be made. Owen caused trouble, on a nother day he'd have scored two, he didn't have his shooting boots on toay, a couple of bad misses and a could of good saves but plenty of good movement summed up his night. The big plus though was Richie De Laet, I was very impressed with him against Hull on the last day of the season 08-09 and he stated today at right back (he was left back against Hull). He played with bag loads of confidence, he showed bits of skill and he put some really good passes together. He's only 21 (I think) and if he keeps this up he's got a bright future ahead of himlsef.

I'm not convinced with Macheda, he's young but I think the two goals he scored late last season as important as they were have flattered to decieve a little. I think he'll be decent but I don't see much in his game, he seems to think on rails and that's where I think Welbeck will upstage him becuase Welbeck can try different approaches and moves and he can be a bit adventurous as well as having a decent shot. Hopefully Macheda will make it, but I've got a feeling that he'll be one that moves on to make way for the next exciting youngster in a few years. Maybe Ra'vel Morrison, though he's more of an attacking midfielder.

Overall I was happy with the game today, I thought we looked dangerous even though we missed plenty of chances. Some of our fringe players playerd well, hell even Nani came on in the second half and played well. That's something. And it's not like Valencia are rubbish, they're no Chelsea but they arn't a rubbish team.

Young = future. In most cases. Welbeck of course was in the U19 squad for the Euro's, along with Danny Drinkwater - one of the weaker rising stars, but he's still progressing. As for Macheda, he's got a slightly bigger job on his hands considering than United no longer have Ronaldo on their team and have traded him in for an injury-prone to say the least Michael Owen, and you have to consider how on-form he was towards the end of last season.
 
What a game today, I have a croaky voice and a pretty sore throat. I don't think I've screamed that loud for a long time. A truely fabulous game to watch, I hardly enjoyed a second of it. It was a completely nerve wreaking game to see. The extra time was a bit much, but all I can say to that is you play to the whistle. MoTD said it was the right ammount of time mind. Michael Owen played the Solskjaer role perfectly today, I think he'll start on Wednesday. I know we made some poor mistakes defensively, but hats off to City who made it one hell of a game and taking thier chances. I'd have preferred they didn't at the time for my nerves, but that was a brilliant game.

In other news, 6-1. Great to see Ryan Babel on the scoresheet.
 
Liverpool fans can thank one of their own child supporters for an assist today, a goal which would cost them the game! :dunce:

 
I just saw that before, that's a crazy goal. I'm not sure what the rules are if a ref has to give the goal or if it's down to his discretion. If he could have stopped play while the beachball was on the pitch then that's a bit of a harsh goal to conceed.
 
I say just make it a goal. Way to go, 12th man.

Wow, that almost makes up for last weeks disapointment. As much as the Liverpool fans love him, Benitez is not a good enough manager, he's too safe. You can't take Torres off at 1-1 and assume you'll score a second when you don't have anyone decent to replace him with. I know why he took him off, because of the game against Lyon mid week, but you can't do that unless you're a couple of goals up. I did not predict a 3-1 win to Fullham, not at all.

I don't think its over. I think it's anyones this season.

City are in with some form of shout, Villa and Spurs but I expect them to fall first. Arsenal can easily give the current top two a run for their money.

I think unless we see some transfers in Jan its Chelsea's title at this moment.
United miss that waste of space more than they thought and Chelsea are grinding out some very good results.
 
I think Chelsea are the team to beat this year but I don't think the titles thiers to win, they've made a few slip ups themselves. The only thing I see City doing this season is threatening for a CL spot, which I 'm not sure they will achieve this season though it's inevitable that they will get there at some point. Sooner rather than later I imagine.

It's easy to say Liverpool have lost too many games to mount a serious challenge, and normally they would have. But everyone has slipped up more than expected so far this season, including Chelsea. Liverpool are only 6 points off the top and that difference can close at any time. Though I personally don't actually think Liverpool will mount a title challenge this year it's definitely still possible.

The record for a weekend is nine, from the 1999/00 season. Will we beat that? Well, the referee at St Andrew's today - Mike Dean - has yet to dismiss a player in any of his four PL games this season... so he's certainly due a red card or two. We'll see.

plus there's now Barry Ferguson of Birmingham, dismissed for Two Yellows in the Sunday game, bringing the weekend's total to 9!
 
A record equalled then, if only De Jong was sent off for being De Jong then it would a clear record.

Two days and two lots of bad news about two players, yesterday Michael Johnson was ruled out with another long term injury, having just come back and regained his fitness I really feel for the lad. He's only 21 or 22 and he's spent more of his professional career injured, he's a good player too when he's fit to play.

And today Dean Ashton announced his retiremnt as a player at just 26 due to his long term ankle injury that kept coming back. Again, a player who showed good potential but has been unable to test it de to injury problems. Unfortunately there was no light at the end of the tunnel for his injury problems and he's called it a day.
 
I cannot aptly describe my sheer infuriation and frustration of Liverpool Football Club and the things that have gone against us this season. I could try, but would be permanently banned. 🤬:mad::banghead:
 
But nothing has really gone against you except your rather amazing ability to self destrict. Injuries to Torres and Gerrard are not an excuse, if the rest of the squad isn't capable of stepping up then that is a problem that you only have Benitez to blame for. All the teams loose key players to injury. You just haven't coped as well.

I geniunely thought after the way you finished last season that you could be a real handfull this year. But it's all so clear to me, you can only play your best football when there's nothing to lose. Benitez is the wrong kind of manager for the Premier League, the glass half empty approach, let's stop the other team scoring best we can before we look at our attacking tactics, will just not win you titles. Last seaosn you had a run of games which were the best I've seen you play since the Premiership started, but by the time you wen't on the run you'd handed us the title. The CL final when you won was in a way, a fluke. You came out in the second half 3-0 down with nothing to lose, and you had a great second half which in that case was enough to win it. But when you're ahead, or on even terms you are so restrained, and it's all down to Benitez.

As long as you have both his tactics and his transfer policy, I don't think you'll ever win the league title. I think you have the foundation to create a team that can, and I think with another manager you could and maybe would have by now. But with Benitez you won't.

Looks like City have managed to snatch a win today against Sunderland, they didn't play very well apparently, but perhaps they might gain a bit of confidence and mov on from this. We on the other hand seem to be completely shot of confidence at the moment, we're also over relying on average players. I was dissapointed that at 2-0 down Fergie decided to put Wellbeck on while we had Tosic on the bench. Tosic has done all he can in the reserves and he's looked better than most of the other fringe players in the few chances he's had in the first team, Fergie had nothing to lose bringing him on for the last 15-20 mins today.

I think for all this "it's an inflated market and there's no value in it" talk, we should just put 20 million down and buy David Silva in January. We're sorted everywhere else, I don't think we're lacking goal scorers, and I think we have a fantastic defensive / holding midfielder in Fletcher and with Hargreaves due to return in January (I hope) we're covered in that area. Plus Carrick can do a job there. But attacking midfield is a big problem for us, Giggs is our best attacking midfielder, Anderson isn't progressing, Gibson isn't good enough yet, if he'll hever be and Scholes just can't play regularly anymore.

I make concession to Scholes for his woeful game tonight beacause he's normally a lot better than that, and the whole team was well below par. But we really need a new attacking midfielder who can provide a good service to our front men and chip in goals every now and then. Injuries aside, we have a good squad, not the best squad, I think that honour lies firmly with Chelsea, but a good squad. But we are seriously lacking in the attacking/creative midfield department when giggs isn't playing and considering Giggs is 36, that's not brilliant for the club.


EDIT: And City have sacked Mark Hughes, can't say I'm suprised but at the same time I feel sorry for him because he's so far met the requirments set by the board at the start of the season. To do well in one of the cups and to finish top 6. Well they're 6th and they're still in the cup. Every game Cuty are playing 8,9 sometimes 10 players who wern't there 12 months ago, you can't expect a team that's changed that much, that fast, to click straight away.

What about lucky deflections (one from a beach ball which shouldn't have counted), freak injuries and players scoring 1 in 1000 chances against us just to start off with.
