GTP Live: Race Report From Monaco
And I'm the generic announcer guy back again to, erm, announce all the happenings of today's race from Monaco, the glitziest, biggest race of the year. Unless of course the end of the season shapes out to be a good fight but at this rate it appears that Guillaume Dubois of Williams is going to simply run away with it. He has a 19 point lead already after 6 races and with the pole going into this race he will have a good chance of tacking more onto that lead.
Alongside him will be Hutchinson of Renault. Row 2 is Dubois's teammate Nearn and the other Renault Beyens. Hopefully this will be a good fight between the 2 teams.
I could stand around and announce qualifying all day but most of you already know the positions and with any luck they'll be shuffled around here in the 78 laps to follow.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and the lights are off and Monaco is GO!
Beyens gets past Nearn for 3rd, Haswell's making a charge from the back - up 3 to 14th, and, oh, there's a car disabled already. Baciu's backwards in the wall, he's climbing out of his car. Wonder if he hit somebody - looks like Davidson's got minor damage and is coming to the pits right now. Stays green though, no safety car.
On to lap 2 and the Renault duo continues to chase down Dubois, but we're getting a pit transmission from Toyota, something wrong with Mason's clutch - that might hurt him in the long run.
Lap 3 sees no change in the positions as Dubois leads and whoaaaaaaaaa! Whitcomb had quite a moment there in the Red Bull, spun and saved the car but dropped a couple positions. He was running 5th, now he's 9th.
We're on to lap 18 and no positions have changed in the front still. Dubois leads the Renault team and his teammate. Allman in the BMW is the first to pit , obviously on a short-stint strategy, but he's mired in the back right now.
Lap 19 now, looks like Vega had an incident there but no harm and look, there's a Honda in the wall - it's Haswell. He was running 14th, looks like he got into somebody. 2nd in the championship, but I'm not so sure now after this DNF. Tough break - and the SC's are out.
And the pit lanes light up on lap 20, nearly all the leaders pull into the pits and BOTH RENAULTS! Oh that's going to hurt Hutchinson as he has to wait for Beyens to pull away...looks like Nearn, Horton and Domingues are jumping into the top 3 but only Domingues pitted. Fantastic job from the Aguri crew there on jumping him 3 spots.
...and what's this? Horton's pulled off but there's no pits in the middle of the track...oh, he's got mechanical issues. Word is his transmission kicked it. Tough luck, he was just putting himself in track position and now this. A dissapointing end.
Lap 25 and the SC pulls into the pits! And so does Mason from P7! Well...that'll send him to the back. Funny strategy there by Toyota.
Next lap and now the leader Nearn is pitting, it was fun up at the top while it lasted but this green flag pit might hurt him. Butler looks like he has some wing damage and he'll have to pit next lap.
And he does and oh look! Here comes his teammate Taylor. Ha! What luck for Taylor - just coming in for his scheduled stop and now he has to wait for his teammate to finish!
Lap 28 - 50 to go - and Chang, in the McLaren has retired! Looks like he's driving a tricycle there after a heavy hit with the wall. He's ok but definitely frustrated.
Onto lap 34, and there's some sort of crash back in the rear of the field, only action we're getting all day. Looking like it's Nearn and Hanon. Nearn's returning to the pits, looks like he's going to be fixed up and sent out. Hanon's day is done, and he's furious. In the great words of Alex Tagliani, he has "no bleeping car left".
Lap 36 - what's this! Beyens has slid into the wall from 3rd place! This could be a costly error, he's still in the race but will have to have an extra pitstop, aaandd....he comes out in 4th, one behind his teammate. So much for that.
Dubois continues to kick butt as Beyens is up to second with the other Renault third. Kawasie, season 3 champ but having a poor season, is up to 6th on apparently a zero-stop strategy and...oh, there he goes. Finally into the pits on lap 50.
And just one lap later there's another wreck! Davidson in the McLaren has parked it at Rascasse a la Schumacher. Except by parked, I mean put in the wall. Hard. He's out and so is the SC. Pitstops shuffle the grid 'round but Dubois continues to lead Domingues now.
Lap 61, we've been having all sorts of fun mechanical problem action at the back and now there's a car in the wall at Tabac, a Midland, it's AlMomen and it appears he's going to be out from P7. Tough race.
Safety car out on lap 64! Let's look at the incident and...it's Allman again. 3rd retirement in a row for him, seems like he tangled with Graham, who is ok. Just not Allman's season so far.
Back to green on lap 70 and it's going to be an 8 lap shootout!
No, just kidding. To heck with passing. Looks like for the 3rd time this year Dubois is the winner, and tacks on 10 points to his championship lead.
Domingues is second in a great race for Super Aguri, and Hutchison leads Renault's 3-4. Whitcomb is 5th in the Red Bull. Kawasie finishes 6th, a good finish but he really needs a podium to kick his season into gear. Finally, Johnstone is seventh and Vega 8th.
